Setting Up the Game
First things first. Let’s get the game all set up and ready to go. Just follow these simple steps:
- The Game Board: Unfold the game board and place it right in the middle of your playing area. Check out the colorful squares, the winding paths, and the vibrant illustrations that bring this game to life.
- Player Tokens: Each player should choose a player token. It could be a car, a dog, a boat, or anything that sparks joy. Grab your favorite token and place it on the “Start” space on the game board.
- Life Tiles: Shuffle the Life tiles and place them nearby, face-down. These tiles hold the secrets to your destiny in the game.
- Money: Everyone loves money, right? Each player starts the game with $10,000 in Monopoly-style money. Don’t spend it all at once! We’ll need it to make our way through the game of life.
- Action Cards: Shuffle the Action cards and place them in a pile face-down. These cards will spice things up and throw unexpected challenges your way.
Phew! That’s it. We’re all set and ready to go on this crazy, unpredictable journey called life.
Playing the Game
Alright, let’s kick things off! Here’s how to play:
On your turn, spin the wheel and move your player token along the path. The number on the wheel will determine how many spaces you move. Each space you land on will have an action associated with it.
For example:
Job Spaces: These spaces represent different careers. When you land on a Job space, you’ll have the chance to choose a career card and start your professional life. Each career comes with its own salary and benefits. Choose wisely!
Action Spaces: These spaces can be both a blessing and a challenge. They’ll require you to draw an action card from the pile. Who knows what fate awaits you? You might receive unexpected money, get married, or even have twins!
Life Spaces: These spaces represent the different stages of life. They’ll present you with life events that will shape your journey. You might buy a house, have a family, or face unexpected expenses. Remember, life is full of surprises!
Retirement: Finally, you’ll reach the golden years of retirement. Once all players have retired, it’s time to count your money and see who’s come out on top. The player who has amassed the most wealth throughout the game will be crowned the winner.
The Thrills of That’s Life!
Wow, what a ride! Just like in real life, That’s Life! will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. You’ll experience the thrills of success, the challenges of setbacks, and the joy of unexpected surprises. With every spin of the wheel, every decision you make, and every card you draw, the game will put your choices to the test.
So, are you ready to face the twists and turns of life? Grab some friends, gather around the table, and let the game of That’s Life! begin!
Life can be unpredictable. Just when you think you’re winning the game, you draw a card that sets you back. But here’s the thing – even that last card can turn everything around. It’s a reminder that the last laugh is often the loudest.
Let’s talk about the components of this game. There are 8 route plus cards, 18 route minus cards, and 6 route fortune cards. You’ll also find a blue “Start” card, an orange “Finish” card, 18 figures, 8 guards, a dice, and instructions.
Now, let’s get to the point of the game. It’s all about using your skills and a bit of luck to collect as many plus (+) and fortune cards as possible. But be careful because there are also minus (-) cards that you want to avoid. It’s a balancing act of strategy and chance.
Did you know that fortune cards have a special significance in the game? They can transform any negative cards into positive ones!
At the end of the game, the player with the highest number of points emerges as the winner. It’s all about those points!
Setting Up the Game
Before diving into the game for the first time, make sure to carefully remove the stamped pieces from the board.
Place the Start card, Route cards, and the Finish card on the table, just like this.
Grab the 8 guards and place them on the 6 fortune cards, as well as on the plus (+) cards labeled “+8” and “+7”.
Now it’s time for each player to select a color and take their items:
- If there are 2-4 players, each player gets 3 figures.
- If there are 5-6 players, each player gets 2 figures. Make sure to place them on the blue Start card.
The player who happens to be the youngest will go first and gets to take the dice. Exciting, isn’t it?
Let’s Play the Game!
Ready to have some fun? In this game, we’ll take turns and move in a clockwise direction. It’s exciting! So, are you excited? I am!
When it’s your turn, roll the dice. The number you get will determine how far you can move. Now pay attention because here’s the twist – you can choose to move one of your figures or one of your guards. But there’s a catch! You can only move a guard if there is at least one figure on that route card. And the figure can belong to anyone. Interesting, right?
![]() Oh, and this is cool – any player can move the guard, not just the Green one. It adds a little bit of surprise to the game! |
But wait, here’s another thing to keep in mind. If there are only guards on a route card, sorry, but none of them can be moved. Tough luck, right?
Now, let’s talk about moving across the cards. You can move across as many cards as the dice shows. It’s like taking big steps! And guess what? There can be any number of players and guards on a single card. So, it can get pretty crowded!
If you manage to move one of your figures or a guard onto the finish card, congratulations! You won that round! But here’s the thing – you don’t get to use the remaining points on the dice. It’s all about strategy, my friend!

Getting a Route Card
If I move my playing piece off a route card, and that card is left empty, I have to take it. But if there were other playing pieces on the card, then the card stays where it is.
When we take the cards, it makes gaps in the game path. These gaps are important for the game and don’t count as spaces to move our playing pieces.
- If the gaps get too wide, we can move the cards closer together.
- When everyone has crossed a route card, we can put that card back in the box.
Here are some examples of moves:
Your turn has arrived, and you roll the dice. A “5” pops up, so you make your move to the first fortune card. The minus card, labeled “-4,” remains untouched since Blue is still occupying it.
Next, it’s Blue’s turn to roll. They also get a “5” result, and they advance to the first fortune card. Since no one else is occupying the minus card, Blue has to claim it. Alternatively, they could have chosen to move one of their other two pieces.
I’m going to tell you a fascinating story about Orange and their incredible moves in a thrilling game. It all starts with Orange throwing a dice four times and getting an interesting number each time. What will they do with these numbers? Let’s find out!
Orange has a figure on card -2 and another figure on card -7. They can choose to move one of the figures from -2 to -7, or they can move a different figure from the start card to -5. But Orange decides to surprise us all and does something unexpected. Instead of moving any of their figures, they decide to move the guard from the first fortune card and advance it by four cards. Now that’s a bold move!
You might be wondering, is this even allowed? Well, it turns out that some of the other players’ figures are on the card where the guard is being moved. This means that Orange gets a special privilege to make this move. However, there’s a catch. Orange can’t move one of the other guards because they are all alone on a route card.
The Route Cards: A World of Values
When it comes to playing the game of cards, have you ever wondered how certain cards earn more points than others? It might seem confusing at first, but I’m here to help you understand!
Let’s talk about the plus (+) card. This card is quite unique because it scores as many points as are indicated on it. So, if you have a plus (+) card with a value of 5, it means you’ll earn 5 points when you play it.
But what exactly does that mean? Well, imagine you’re playing a game with your friends, and you have a plus (+) card with a value of 3. When you play this card, you add 3 points to your total score. It’s like getting a bonus for playing that card!
Now, keep in mind that the plus (+) card is just one type of card in the game. There are other cards with different point values, such as the minus (-) card or the multiply (x) card. Each card has its own unique way of scoring points.
So, the next time you play a card game, remember that the plus (+) card is a special card that can really elevate your score. And if you like earning lots of points, then you’ll love playing with the plus (+) card! Just make sure to take into account the value of the card and use it wisely.
A minus card, which has a negative value, will cost you the number of points specified on the card.
When the game ends, a special fortune card comes into play. This card allows you to turn your highest negative card into a positive card. It’s like turning a bad thing into a good thing!
If you have multiple fortune cards, you can convert the same number of negative cards into positive ones. So the more fortune cards you have, the better!
But be careful – if you have more fortune cards than negative cards, the extra ones don’t count. It’s like having too much of a good thing.
The Game Ends
The game comes to a close when all players reach the finish card. Once you’ve moved all your game pieces to the finish line, that’s it – you’re done playing.
Now it’s time to tally up your points. Add up the values of all your positive cards, including the ones that used to be negative. Then subtract the values of any remaining negative cards.
Whoever has the highest score wins the game. It’s as simple as that!
