Taboo Game Rules
Taboo is an incredibly fun and exciting game that challenges your communication skills and quick thinking. The objective of the game is simple: guess as many words as possible within a given time, but there’s a catch – you can’t use certain words to describe the main word. That’s where the challenge comes in!
The game requires at least 4 players, divided into two teams. Each team takes turns being the guesser and the describer. The describer selects a card with a word on it, and their task is to make their teammates guess that word without using any of the taboo words listed on the card. They can use gestures, act things out, or provide clues, but they must be careful not to utter any of the taboo words!
The guesser’s role is to figure out the main word based on the clues provided by their teammate. They must pay close attention and try to decipher the clues without getting distracted by the taboo words that are off-limits. It’s a game of quick thinking and mental agility!
Each team has a limited amount of time to guess as many words as possible. Once the timer runs out, the roles switch, and the other team gets their chance to describe and guess words. The team with the highest number of correct guesses at the end wins the game!
Taboo is an excellent game for parties, gatherings, or simply to have fun with friends. It can be played by people of all ages, and it’s a great way to improve your communication skills and word association abilities. So, gather your friends, form teams, and get ready to engage in a thrilling battle of wits and words!
Remember, the key to succeeding in Taboo is thinking quickly, remaining focused, and avoiding those forbidden words. Are you up for the challenge? Give Taboo a try and see how well you can communicate under pressure. Get ready for excitement, laughter, and a whole lot of fun! Happy guessing!
How can you make your team say APPLE? You have to think quickly and speak without mentioning certain words like RED, FRUIT, PIE, CIDER, or CORE. Those words are off-limits!
Your goal is to speak rapidly and avoid the taboo words to earn points and avoid getting buzzed.
- “The city that never sleeps.”
- “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
- “This was used by William Tell for target practice.”
As you give clues, listen for your teammates to shout out the correct answers. Make sure to read the rules before playing – it’s taboo to skip them!

What’s Inside
- 504 Cards
- Card Holder
- Buzzer
- Timer
- Scorepad
How to Play
Our goal is simple: score as many points as we can by guessing words.
Getting Ready
To get started, place the buzzer and timer where everyone can easily reach them. Make sure the card holder is filled with cards. You’ll want to begin by playing with the green side.
Next, divide the players into two teams – Team A and Team B. It doesn’t matter if one team ends up with more players than the other.
Playing in Turns
- Team A will choose one player to be their first Clue-giver. This player should sit facing the card holder and have the timer nearby.
- Players from Team B should sit beside or behind Team A’s Clue-giver so they can see the cards as they are played. Team B will also control the buzzer.
- The Clue-giver’s teammates are not allowed to see the cards. They should sit opposite their Clue-giver and wait for the opportunity to shout out their answers.
Once a turn is complete for Team A’s Clue-giver, it’s time for a member from Team B to take over. To ensure fairness, the clue-giver from the new team will switch seats with their teammates, hiding the cards from their own team while revealing them to the opposing team. Team A will pass the buzzer to Team B, signaling the start of their turn.
Teams will continue to alternate between appointing clue-givers and guessing words until each player has taken a turn as the clue-giver. Take note that if one team has fewer players, one player from that team will serve as the clue-giver twice.
When you’ve exhausted all the green side of the cards, get ready for more fun by flipping them over and playing with the purple side!
Hey there! Let me give you some hints for guessing the word “Tom Hanks” in our fun guessing game. Ready? Here we go!
How to Play
First, the clue-giver will draw a card from the card holder and put it on the easel, just like in the picture below. The word at the top of the card is the word they want their team to guess. In this case, it’s “Tom Hanks”.
Alright, listen up! I’m going to break down the rules for giving clues in this game.
Here’s the deal: there are five TABOO words displayed below the Guess Word. The Clue-giver is NOT allowed to use any of these TABOO words when giving clues for the Guess Word. Got it?
Here’s how it works: as soon as a card is drawn, the Clue-giver flips the timer and starts giving clues to help their teammates guess the Guess Word. These clues can be in the form of detailed sentences, short phrases, or even single words. Whatever it takes to get the word across!
But remember, there’s a catch – the Clue-giver must avoid using the TABOO words. It’s like a challenge within a challenge!
So, go ahead and give it your best shot! Just remember to follow the rules and have fun!
I can’t give any form or part of ANY word printed on the card as a clue.
For example: If the Guess Word is PAYMENT, I can’t give “pay” as a clue. If DRINK is a TABOO word, I can’t give “drunk” as a clue.
As I give clues, you should shout out possible words, trying to guess the Guess Word. Don’t worry, there’s no penalty for wrong guesses.
Getting a Point
Every time you shout out the correct Guess Word, we score a point for our team. The guessed card stays on the easel, and I quickly draw another card and put it in front of the already-guessed card(s).
The number of correctly guessed cards on the easel is the number of points I earn for our team.
Losing a Point
So here’s the deal: when I’m giving clues, there are two ways for me to lose points. First, if you get all excited and buzz in when you shouldn’t, I’ll lose points. And second, if I decide to pass on a card, I’ll also lose points. And guess what? All those points I lose? They go straight to your team. Talk about a double whammy!
The Dreaded Buzz
Let’s talk about that buzzer. If you’re a little too trigger-happy and buzz in before I finish giving my clue, I lose points. And not just a small amount – all the points for that card! Ouch. So, take a deep breath and hold onto that buzzer until I’m done. Trust me, we both want those points to stay right where they are.
My Card, Your Points
Now, let’s say I’m having a bit of trouble with a certain card, and I decide to pass. Well, you might think that’s good news for your team, right? And you know what? You’d be absolutely right. Because when I pass, all the points for that card go straight to you. So hey, if I’m stumped, it’s your lucky day!
So, there you have it. Buzzing and passing – the two ways I can lose points and you can gain them. It’s a wild ride, that’s for sure. Just remember, we’re in this together, so let’s strategize and make every point count. Good luck, and let the games begin!
When it’s my turn to give clues in the game, the other team members watch me closely and keep an eye on the cards.
If I accidentally say a word on the “taboo” list or break any of the clue-giving rules, the other team will buzz the buzzer.
That buzz means the card is no longer in play. The other team will quickly explain why they think the card should be disqualified.
I have to take the dead card off the stand and put it in a separate pile. Then I grab a new card and keep going. The number of cards in the discard pile adds up as points for the other team.
If I Want to Skip a Card
If I decide I don’t want to give clues for a particular card, I can choose to pass. I just take the card off the stand and put it in the discard pile.
Every time I pass, the other team earns a point.
Hey there! Just a quick tip before we begin: remember that you’re racing against the timer, so it might be best to move on if you’re spending too much time on one card.
The Clue-giver’s turn continues until the timer runs out. The opposing team keeps an eye on the timer and lets you know when time is up.
If there’s an unfinished card on the easel, don’t worry about it. It doesn’t count towards the score. Now, let’s count the cards on the easel for your team’s score. And don’t forget to count the cards in the discard pile for the opposing team’s score. After each turn, record the scores on the scorepad for both teams.
Before the opposing team’s Clue-giver starts their turn, make sure to remove all the cards from the easel and discard pile. They’re out of play for now.
The Game Ends
Once everyone has taken their turn as the Clue-giver, it’s time to tally up the points. The team that has collected the most points throughout the game emerges victorious.
In the event of a tie, each team selects their strongest Clue-giver and receives one more opportunity to determine the ultimate winner.
