Setup

To begin playing Swintus Junior, shuffle the deck of cards and deal seven cards to each player. The remaining cards will be placed face-down in a draw pile, with the top card turned face-up next to it.

Gameplay

Ready, set, go!

The player with the lowest card starts the game. Play moves clockwise around the table. On your turn, you must play a card that matches the color or number of the card on top of the discard pile.

If you do not have a matching card, you must draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is playable, you may choose to play it. Otherwise, your turn ends, and play moves to the next player.

Special Cards:

1. Skip Card: With this card, you can skip the next player’s turn. Simply play the Skip Card on top of the discard pile, and the next player loses their turn.

2. Reverse Card: This card changes the direction of play. If the game was moving clockwise, it now moves counterclockwise, and vice versa. Play the Reverse Card on top of the discard pile to activate it.

3. Draw Two Card: When this card is played, the next player must draw two cards from the draw pile and skip their turn. Play the Draw Two Card on top of the discard pile to enforce this rule.

4. Wild Card: The Wild Card allows you to change the color of play. You can choose any color you desire. When playing the Wild Card, you must state the new color for the next player to follow.

Winning the Game

The Goal of the Game

I want to be the first player to use up all of my cards to win the game.

How to Play the Game

I shuffle the deck and give each player eight cards. Then, I put the deck with the cards facing down in the middle of the table. I flip over the top card of the deck, and that becomes the card we start playing with.

The player who is the youngest goes first, and then we take turns until one of us uses up all of our cards.

Pick a Card, but Not Just Any Card

When it’s my turn, I have to choose a card and place it on top of the stack. But I can’t just pick any card; it has to either match the previous card’s color or value.

Let’s say the top card is a green seven. That means I have to play either a green card or a seven of any color.

If I don’t have a card that I can play, or if I simply don’t want to play any of my cards, then I have to draw the top card from the deck. If I can play that card right away, then I can put it down. Otherwise, the turn moves on to the next player going clockwise.

Swintus Time!

Right before I play my second-to-last card or give it to another player, I get to give my opponents a smug look and proudly proclaim, “Swintus!”

Intercept

Did you know that some cards in the deck have duplicates? That means there are two of each card, like two blue fives or two orange Stompies. Here’s a cool trick: if someone plays a card that you also have in your hand, you can do an “intercept.” This means you can play your card right away, without waiting for your turn. After you’re done, it’s the next player’s turn.

Transfer

Now let me tell you about the Snoring Pig and Greedy-Piggy cards. If the player before you plays one of these cards, you can play the same card, even if it’s a different color. Here’s the fun part: if you play the Snoring Pig, the player after you will have to skip their turn. But if you play the Greedy-Piggy, they have to skip a turn and draw six cards! And get this, if they also have a Greedy-Piggy, they can pass the cards on to the next player, making their troubles even worse.

Don’t Tarry

When you play Swintus, it’s important to follow the rules to avoid penalties. If you make an illegal move, like not following the rules, you will have to draw two cards and skip your turn. This can be a bit frustrating!

Swintus is a really fun game, especially when it’s played at a quick pace. But if you take too long on your turn, you will have to skip a turn and draw two more cards. So make sure you play quickly!

You can control the speed of the game by limiting how much time you spend thinking about your moves. We recommend only thinking about 2-5 specific card instructions. If you take too long, you will be penalized and have to fix your mistake, like taking back a card you played incorrectly.

If the deck of cards runs out, you need to shuffle the remaining cards (except for the top one) and use them as a new deck.

In each round, the game ends as soon as I play my last card and follow all the rules. This holds true even if a card, like Stompy, requires me to take additional actions.

Awesome cards

Greedy-Piggy – The next player has to draw three cards from the deck and then skip their turn.

Whirly-Piglet – This card changes the direction of the game, making it move in a counter-clockwise direction. If this card is used again in the same round, the direction reverses back and forth.

Snoring Pig – The next player has to skip their turn.

Pigameleon – I can play this card on any other card. I get to choose the color of the next card that the following player must play. I can choose any one of the four colors, including the color of the card I played Pigameleon on.

Silent-Piggy – When I use this card, everyone has to stay completely quiet until I play another card. If someone talks, they have to end the silence, but they also have to pick two cards from the deck.

Stompy – Right after I play this card, everyone has to put one hand on the deck. The person whose hand is on top last has to pick two cards, and everyone else has to do the same. If someone takes their hand off the deck, they have to pick up two cards.

Smarty – This card lets me be really creative. I can make up my own silly rules and whoever breaks a rule has to pick two cards from the deck.
