Scattergories Categories Game Rules
Introduction
Welcome to the wild and exciting world of Scattergories! In this game, you’ll put your quick thinking and creativity to the test as you come up with words that fit into different categories. It’s a fun challenge that will push your brain to its limits!
Objective
The goal of Scattergories is to score points by writing down unique words that fit specific categories within a given time limit. The more unique your answers are, the more points you’ll get. It’s a race against the clock to see who can come up with the most original answers!
Gameplay
1. Gather your friends and set up the game. You’ll need the Scattergories game board, a die, and answer sheets for each player.
2. Roll the die to determine the letter that your answers must start with. The letter you roll will be the letter that all your answers for that round begin with.
3. Flip the sand timer and quickly start coming up with words that fit the different categories on the game board. For example, if the category is “animals” and the letter is “C,” you might write down “cat” or “cheetah.” Be creative and think outside the box!
4. Keep track of your answers and make sure they are unique. If someone else has the same answer as you, you won’t get any points for that category.
5. Once the sand timer runs out, everyone stops writing. It’s time to share your answers! Go through each category and read aloud your unique words. If anyone has the same word as you, both of you cross it off your list.
6. Score your answers. For each unique word that no one else has, you get a point. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!

- There are 125 cards, each with a 250-word challenge.
- Use the 2-minute sand timer to keep track of time.
- The plastic card base holds the cards in place.
- Each player gets a score sheet pad to record their answers.
Let’s Get Started!
The goal of the game is to be the first player to score 25 points. You score points by coming up with answers that fit the categories and clues.
On your score sheet, write down your answers. You earn points for answers that no one else has.
Setting Up the Game
Everyone gets a score pad and a pen or pencil.
Take 10 cards from the deck and put them in the middle of the table. Place the sand timer and the plastic card base next to the cards.
How to Play
One player picks a card and puts it in the card base. The category is written in big letters on the card. For example, it might say, “marriage”.
Alright, folks, here’s the deal. You grab your pen and paper and get ready to play this super fun game. The first thing you do is write down the letters of the category, vertically, on your score sheet. So for example, if the category is “Marriage,” you write down “M” in the first box, “A” in the second box, “R” in the third box, and so on.
Once everyone has their score sheets ready, someone reads out the phrase or clue on the card. Let’s say the clue for the “Marriage” card is “Things you might see at a wedding.” Sounds pretty exciting, right?
Now, get ready because as soon as the two-minute timer starts, it’s a race against time! Everyone starts thinking and writing down as many things as they can that fit the category. Since the category is “Things you might see at a wedding,” you might write down “Minister” for the letter “M,” “Altar” for the letter “A,” “Roses” for the letter “R,” and so on. Get creative!
When the timer buzzes, that’s it! Stop writing, even if your list is not complete. Don’t worry, you’ll still score points for the answers you managed to come up with. It’s all part of the fun!
Let’s start with the oldest player. We’ll take turns reading our lists. Each player gets one point for every word that doesn’t match any of the other player’s words in the same spot.
After everyone has read their lists and scored their points, we’ll play another round. We can flip the card or choose a new one from the pile. The game continues just like before, with each player filling out a new column for each card played.
Once one or more players reach or go over 25 points, the game is over. The player with the most points is the winner. If there’s a tie, those players share the win.
How Points are Scored in the Game
In the game, you earn points by giving correct answers that are not repeated. However, there is an exception to this rule. If a category word contains multiple instances of the same letter, like “marriage” with two R’s, you need to compare the answers for each letter.
Here’s an example to help you understand. Let’s say two players wrote “Roses” for the first “R” in the category word. In this case, neither player would score any points. But if the first player wrote “Roses” for the first “R” and the second player wrote “Roses” for the second “R”, then both players would score 1 point each because they didn’t repeat the word adjacent to the same “R”.
Tip: To get an edge over your opponents, it’s a good strategy to think about where you write your answer.
What Answers are Acceptable?
- Every answer should start with the key letter mentioned in the box on the corresponding line of your score sheet.
The Exciting Game of “Letter Scramble”

In this game, you’ll try to come up with words that start with a specific letter, given a category or clue. Let’s dive in and discover the ins and outs of this thrilling word game!
How to Play
The rules are simple. Each round, I’ll give you a category or a clue, along with a key letter. Your mission is to think of as many words as you can that fit the category and start with the given letter. For example, if the category is “animals” and the key letter is “C,” you could say “cat,” “camel,” or “cheetah.” Be creative and come up with unique words to score more points!
Scoring
Every correct answer earns you one point. The longer the word, the more points you’ll receive. So don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with longer, more challenging words!
Double Points
If your word uses the key letter more than once as the first letter, you’ll earn two points instead of one. Make the most of this opportunity and rack up those extra points!
End of the Game
The game ends when a player reaches 25 points. As soon as that happens, that player is declared the winner of the game. So keep playing, keep scoring, and aim for victory!
Variation
Here’s an extra twist for added excitement. If you manage to come up with a proper name or title that starts with the key letter and use it more than once as the first letter in your answer, you’ll earn an additional point. So challenge yourself and aim for those extra points!
