For a game with 4 players, we will use all 28 coral pieces of each color.

If we have a game with 3 players, we only need 24 coral pieces of each color.

And for a game with 2 players, we will use 18 coral pieces of each color.

Any coral pieces that are not needed can be returned to the box.

Now let’s move on to the point tokens. We will sort them by their values: 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20. Each value will form a separate supply.

Each player will receive three 1-point tokens. These tokens will be placed in front of each player as their personal point stock. It’s where they will collect all of their point tokens.

Alrighty, let’s get this game started! First things first, I’m going to shuffle the deck of 60 cards and give each player 2 cards face down. Keep those cards a secret!

Next, I’ve got some player boards for everyone. Each player gets one, and make sure the one with the starfish is in there. Shuffle ’em up and randomly hand one out to each player. The lucky person with the starfish board gets to go first!

Now, let’s grab some coral pieces. Each player gets one of each color. Nice and fair. Take those colorful beauties and put one on each of the 4 center spaces on your player board. You can pick the order – it’s up to you!

If we all understand the game, here’s how we can set it up: Put your four pieces on any spaces on your player board, except the four middle spaces. You can even stack them in any way you want.

Next to your player board, leave some space for a discard pile. Let’s call it pile I. Take the deck of cards that we set aside earlier and place it face-up as a draw deck in the middle of the table. We’ll call this deck J.

Draw three cards from the deck J and place them in a row next to the deck. These three cards will be displayed face-up for everyone to see. We’ll call this row of cards K, the card display.

How to Play

The game of Reef is played in rounds. Each of us will take turns, starting with the first player and going clockwise until the game ends. On your turn, you must choose one of the following two actions:

When you want to play a card in the game, simply take it from your hand and put it on top of your discard pile. Make sure it’s facing up so that everyone can see it. The discard pile is located next to your player board. Once you’ve placed the card on the discard pile, it’s time to move on to the next steps.

First, grab the two coral pieces from your chosen color. These will be the ones shown on the top of your card. Now, find a spot on your player board where you want to place each of the coral pieces. It can be on any empty space or on top of an existing piece or stack.

General Notes

During the last round, when you need coral pieces of a color that isn’t available in large quantities, take as many of those pieces as you can from the available supply and continue your turn as usual.

At any time, you can exchange point tokens between your personal stock and the overall supply (or between a card in the display and the overall supply) to get different amounts of the same value.

Throughout the game, you can stack your point tokens on top of each other to keep your total points hidden.

There’s no limit to the supply of point tokens. If you run out, don’t worry!
