Game Objective

My goal is to build up my province by utilizing my workers and effectively managing my collected dice. Ultimately, I need to emerge victorious by achieving both wealth and fame. The fame track and money track run alongside each other on the gameboard, but move in opposite directions. The fame markers progress in a clockwise direction, while the money markers move counterclockwise.

As you play and grow, your goal is to become more famous and wealthy. You want your fame marker and money marker to come together or even cross paths on the game board. Whoever achieves this first has a good chance of winning.

Here’s how you set up the game:

– Place the game board in the center of the table. Make sure the side that matches the number of players is facing up (either “2 players” or “3 and 4 players”).

– In a 3-player game, cover the marked spaces with the cover tiles.

– Take all 48 dice and put them next to the game board.

You don’t need the yellow, red, and brown yield tiles for this version. They’re only used in the Navaratnas version. Also, you don’t need the 8 river tiles for the Ganga-Module.

Make sure to keep all 48 dice next to the game board. They’re your general supply.

Alright, let’s get started on setting up our game of Kali.

First, we need to sort the province tiles. Organize them by their colors and then by the symbols on their backs (snake, cow, tiger). Once sorted, we’ll have 12 stacks to work with. Mix up the stacks and place them face up next to the game board where everyone can easily see them.

Next, let’s mix up the 8 white yield tiles and place them in a face-down stack on the temple.

Now, each player will need their own province board and components, all in the same color. This includes a Kali statue board, 6 workers, 1 boat, 5 cubes for karma and upgrades, 1 money marker, and 1 fame marker. Oh, and don’t forget the bonus marker for the money track!

Before we start playing, let’s place 3 workers on the appropriate spaces on the record tracks (15 fame and 20 money). We’ll also need to place 3 workers on the bridge in the river.

Now it’s time to set up our personal playing area. Place your Kali statue and province board in front of you, with the illustrated sides facing up. Then, take 3 of your workers and put them below your Kali statue.

Next up, your fame marker. You want to be noticed, right? Place your marker on space 0 of the fame track. This way, everyone will know where you stand.

Oh, and don’t forget about the bonus marker for the money track. Make sure the river space side is facing up and put it on the first bonus space of the money track, which is space 12. This will give you a little extra something when it comes to raking in the cash.

Last but not least, let’s roll some dice! Grab one in each color and give ’em a good roll. Take a look at the result and put the dice, with the numbers you rolled facing up, on any empty arms of your Kali statue.

So, here’s how it goes: when we’re starting this game, one of us has to go first, right? And the way we decide is by rolling the dice. Whoever gets the lowest total value gets to be the starting player. But, if there’s a tie, things get a little spicy! In that case, it’s all about the last Indian food you ate. Yes, you heard me right! Whoever had Indian food last gets the privilege of going first. Cool, huh?

Once we know who the starting player is, they place their fancy starting player elephant next to their Kali statue, and their money marker goes on space 3 of the money track. Now, it’s time for the rest of us to jump on the money train. The player to the left of the starting player puts their money marker on space 4, then the player to their left puts theirs on space 5, and so on, moving in player order. And guess what? The player who goes last in this round starts with the most money. Not a bad deal, right?

Playing the Game

Playing the game involves going through multiple rounds, each with its own set of stages. During each stage, players take turns placing one worker on the gameboard in a clockwise order, starting with the first player. They must also pay any necessary costs and immediately carry out the action corresponding to their placement. This process continues until no one is able to place any more workers. Moolah: When you want to do something on a specific spot, you may need to part ways with some dough. Different spots have different price tags attached to them, and you can usually find this information highlighted on the spot itself.

When you play the game, remember that each action space can only have one worker. Instead of placing dice directly onto the board, you always put them in your general or personal supply!

Spending money for an action: Whenever you need to pay money for an action, like at the harbor or the quarry, you move your money marker back on the money track. For each money you have to pay, you move your marker back by one space. If your marker reaches 0, it means you have no money left, and you won’t be able to do any actions that require money for the time being.

The same rule applies to actions that require dice. If you don’t have any suitable dice, you won’t be able to take the action that requires them.

I. Building Action (quarry)

Here’s what you do: place a province tile in your province, and you’ll earn fame points and/or money for doing this.

If you want to expand your province, you gotta send workers to the quarry. Depending on where you put ’em, you pay 1 to 4 money on the money track. And what do you get in return? Well, you get to pick one of the 12 province tiles that are out on display.

The top left of the tiles shows a dice with a minimum value that you need to give up in order to snag the tile. Take the dice of that color and put ’em back in the supply. The total value of those dice gotta be at least as high as the number on the tile. But here’s the thing: you can pay even more if you want. Let’s say you wanna buy a tile that says “blue 7.” You can use a blue 3 and a blue 5 to pay for it. Nothing wrong with overpaying!

Now, let’s talk about what these tiles actually have. They might show roads, buildings, or markets. As soon as you grab a tile, you gotta slap it on your province board. No hanging around!

Whenever you add a new province tile, you need to connect one of its roads to an existing road so that it connects to your residence.

You can rotate the new tile in any direction you like. You can even position it in a way that blocks off a road on an adjacent tile. Not all road ends need to be connected to each other, as long as each tile has at least one road connected to your residence. Once a tile is placed, it stays there – you can’t move it later on. Be careful not to block all the roads, so you always have enough options for placing more tiles.

Special Benefits

Hey there! Did you know that the province boards have something super special printed on their edges? It’s called yields, and they represent the cool rewards you get from having good trade relations. When you connect a province board to your residence with a road, you instantly receive these awesome yields. But hang on, you also earn points for the province tile itself! How cool is that?

Example: Let’s say I’m playing a game called “Leila’s Province.” Leila just placed a tile with a bend in the corner on the left side of her province. Since the ends of the road on the tile connect to both adjacent yields and are also connected to her residence, Leila is allowed to take any one die from the supply and move her money marker five spaces forward.

Now, it’s also possible to place a tile without creating a connection to the special yield. In that case, you won’t get any extra rewards.

As you expand your province by adding new tiles, you immediately earn money and/or fame. Some tiles will show one or two market tents with goods like silk, tea, or spices, each with a certain value. Other tiles will show buildings like a temple, palace, fort, or mill. And some tiles will even have a combination of both.

At the start of the game, your upgrade cubes are on the lowest level of each building, which means you’ll earn 2 fame points for each building. So if you add a province tile with 1 building or 2 buildings, you’ll rack up 2 or 4 fame points, respectively. Not bad, huh?

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Upgrades allow you to level up your building skills and earn even more points in future building actions. So you can get upgrades from the raja at the palace by giving up a value-4 die. There’s also a special river space that grants you an upgrade. And guess what? Whenever you assign a worker to a market space, you earn money for the markets in your area. There are markets that deal in three types of goods: silk, tea, and spices. Plus, there are two different kinds of market spaces:

1. A Variety of Goods – When you put your worker here, you can earn points for each type of market. For example: Let’s say there are 4 markets in my province. Three of them are selling tea, and one is selling silk. If I place a worker on this market space, I can score points for 2 markets: the silk market and one of the tea markets. In return, I’ll earn 5 money.

In this game, there is a market where you can trade goods. When you place a worker in this market, you have to give up one of your dice. Then, you can score points for as many markets of the same type of good as the value of the die you gave up. For example, if you give up a die with a value of 4, you can score points for up to 4 tea markets and earn money.

It’s important to note that in a 3 or 4-player game, you can only place one worker on the assorted goods market each round. This means that if you place a worker on the first space, you cannot use the second space in that round. Another player would be able to use it instead. However, you can still place workers on the other market types.

For each market you have built in your province, receive 1 money. If you have built 5 markets, move your money marker five spaces forward on the money track.

If you have multiple markets of different goods, score points for up to three of them. Check the explanation of the markets on page 17 for details.

If you have multiple markets of the same good in your province, score points for all of them. Use the maximum number indicated on the river. For example, if you have 4 silk markets, you can score points for all of them and move your money marker forward accordingly. You don’t need to sacrifice a die for this.

Receive 1 fame point for each building upgrade you’ve completed so far. If you’ve upgraded buildings three times, move your fame marker three spaces forward.

Receive 2 money for each building upgrade you’ve completed so far. If you’ve upgraded buildings three times, move your money marker six spaces forward.

Finally, receive 2 fame points for each level of karma you currently have. If your karma is at level 2, move your fame marker four spaces forward.

When you reach the final river space, you’re not allowed to use the river action anymore.

Karma

Use 1 karma to flip a die to the opposite side.

You can affect the outcome of a die roll by using karma. With one karma, you can change the face of any die on your Kali statue to the opposite side when you place it. This means that a “1” can turn into a “6” and vice versa, a “2” can become a “5”, and so on.

When I start the game, my karma is at level 1. As I progress through the game, I have the opportunity to improve my karma. This can be done by sending one of my workers to the Yogi in the palace or by stopping my boat on the appropriate river space. Additionally, there is a bonus space on the fame track at space 24. If my fame marker lands on or crosses this space, my karma increases by 2 levels. The maximum karma level is 3, meaning I can have a maximum of 3 karma.

To use my karma, I don’t need to assign any workers. I can use my karma at any point during my turn when I choose to give up a die. Each time I use my karma, I move my karma cube 1 level down. This means my karma can decrease all the way to zero.

Once you get the applicable bonus, you take the marker, turn it over, and put it on space 33 with the die side facing up.

After that, when your money marker reaches or crosses space 33, you turn the marker back and put it on space 44 with the river space side facing up. This pattern continues as your money marker moves along the track. Whenever it reaches or crosses a new space, you alternate between the die side up and the river side up.

Pay attention: Each bonus applies only to the track where it’s printed. So, if your money marker passes a bonus space on the adjacent fame track, you won’t get the bonus from there.

The End of a Round

Once all of your workers are in place and you have completed your actions, the round comes to a close. If someone has placed a worker at the Great Mogul, they will receive the starting player elephant and become the starting player for the next round. If no one has sent a worker to the Great Mogul, the elephant will pass clockwise from the previous starting player to the next player.

At the end of the round, all players remove their active workers from the gameboard and return them to their Kali statue. Then, the starting player begins the new round.

Once a player’s fame marker and money marker meet or surpass each other, the game will end.

You see, all the players who are sitting between the player who triggered the end of the game and the player who started it still have a chance to win. So, they can place one more worker, if they have any left, and take another action. Pretty exciting, right?

Once that’s done, we need to figure out who won. Here’s how it works: if there are two or more players whose markers passed each other on their final turn, each of those players counts the difference in fame points between their money marker and their fame marker. The one with the most points is the winner! Talk about a thrilling victory!

But what if there’s a tie? Well, in that case, the first player whose two markers passed each other is the winner. No need to worry about being second or third just yet. To figure that out, you count how many fame points are still separating your fame marker from your money marker. It’s all about those points!

Example: My money marker has passed my fame marker. Now my money marker is on space 65 of the money track, and my fame marker is on space 30 of the fame track. Then it’s Leila’s turn. She also manages to have her two markers pass each other. Her money marker ends up on space 52 of the money track, her fame marker on space 37 of the fame track. So we both have a difference of 2 fame points (it doesn’t matter where the money marker is). Since I was the first to have my two markers pass each other, I win by a small margin.
