Raiders of the North Sea Game Rules
Hey there! Are you interested in learning the game rules for Raiders of the North Sea? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s dive in and explore the exciting world of this game.
First things first, let’s talk about the objective of the game. The goal is to become the most successful Viking raider by gaining Victory Points (VP). You can earn VP by raiding settlements, capturing livestock, and constructing buildings. The player with the most VP at the end of the game wins. Simple enough, right?
Now, let’s chat about the gameplay itself. In this game, you’ll be taking on the role of a Viking warrior. Your main actions will revolve around recruiting a crew, gathering provisions, and launching raids. You’ll need to carefully plan your moves to maximize your resources and strategically raid the most lucrative targets.
To start the game, each player is given a set of colored meeples, representing their crew. These meeples will be used to carry out various actions throughout the game. You’ll also receive a personal board, which will help you keep track of your resources, provisions, and crew.
On your turn, you’ll have a few options. You can choose to:
1. Place a meeple on a location card: This allows you to take the corresponding action of that card. You could recruit a new crew member, gain resources, or even launch a raid!
2. Play a card from your hand: Each player starts with a hand of cards, which can be used to gain additional resources, crew members, or special abilities. Playing the right card can give you a significant advantage over your opponents.
3. Spend resources to construct a building: Buildings not only provide you with ongoing benefits, but they also grant you VP at the end of the game. Investing in the right buildings can be a game-changer.
Now, let’s talk about raids. Raids are the heart of this game. When you’re ready to raid, you’ll need to gather a crew and enough provisions to support them. The more provisions you have, the more lucrative your raid will be. But be careful, if your crew gets too big, you’ll need more provisions to sustain them. It’s all about finding the right balance.
During a raid, you’ll choose a settlement to attack. Each settlement will have its own requirements and rewards. Some may require a specific crew size, while others may offer special bonuses. As you successfully complete raids, you’ll earn VP and gain even more resources to further your Viking empire.
The game continues until a certain number of fortresses have been raided or all Valkyrie tokens have been claimed. At this point, players will tally up their VP to determine the winner. So make sure you plan your raids wisely and gather as many resources as possible to secure victory!
I hope this guide has given you a good overview of the Raiders of the North Sea game rules. Remember, the key to success is strategic planning, resource management, and a little bit of luck. So gather your crew, sharpen your axes, and set sail on a thrilling Viking adventure! Have fun!

Raiders of the North Sea takes place during the adventurous Viking Age. I’m a Viking warrior, and my goal is to impress the Chieftain by raiding villages that are caught off guard.
To achieve this, I must gather a crew, gather supplies, and head north to steal gold, iron, and livestock. There’s even a chance to find glory in battle with the Valkyries. So, grab your warriors, because raiding season is here!
The objective of Raiders of the North Sea is to earn the most Victory Points (VP) to impress the Chieftain. Victory Points are mainly earned by raiding villages, looting valuable items, and making offerings to the Chieftain.
How players use their loot is crucial to their success. The game comes to an end when there’s only one fortress raid left, all Valkyries are gone, or all offerings have been made.
Now let’s talk about the components of the game.

Understanding the Symbols in the Game
Before you start playing, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the symbols on the game board and cards. These symbols help you understand the rules and mechanics of the game. Here are some key symbols to look out for:
Welcome First-Time Players!
So, you’re ready to dive into the world of Raiders of the North Sea? Great! Here’s a simple concept you need to know:
Every player, including you, starts and finishes their turn with 1 Worker in hand. Got it? Good! On your turn, you’ll place your Worker on the board to take an action.
After you’ve taken your first action, you’ll pick up a different Worker to take a second action. No matter what actions you choose, this rule will always apply.
Let’s Get Set Up
Now, let’s go through the steps to set up Raiders of the North Sea:
1. Put the game board right in the middle of the play area. This is your central hub.
2. Take all 71 Townsfolk Cards and shuffle them into a single deck. Place the deck face down within easy reach of all players. This deck is called the Townsfolk Draw Pile. Don’t forget to leave room for a Discard Pile too.
Ok, let’s get started! Here’s what you need to do to set up the game:
Step 1: Lay out the game board with all the different areas and spaces.
Step 2: Give every player their own player board and set their Clan markers on the scoring track.
Now, let’s move on to the next steps:
Step 3: Shuffle all 16 Offering Tiles and stack them facedown to the side of the board. Take the top 3 Tiles and place them faceup to the right of the Long House.
Step 4: Next, it’s time to prepare the Valkyrie and Plunder. Put all of them in the Black Bag and give it a good mix. Then, randomly draw and place the required number of Valkyrie and Plunder for each raiding space. You can find the number you need indicated by the green icon at the top left of each raiding space. Finally, any leftover Valkyrie and Plunder should be placed next to the board to form the Main Supply.
And remember, raiding spaces are the transparent rectangular boxes that you’ll find over each Settlement, including Harbours, Outposts, Monasteries, and Fortresses.
Okay, here’s what we need to do:
First, we need to put all the White and Grey Workers in their designated raiding spaces. You can find these spaces by looking for the Worker icon at the top right of each space. These Workers are important because we collect them during raids. Then, we should place 3 Black Workers in the Village. You can place them on the Gate House, Town Hall, and Treasury, which are the buildings with a blue card icon.
Next, we need to put all the Silver and Provisions to the side of the board in the Main Supply. This is where we keep our resources. The dice can also be placed here.
Finally, each player will get 2 Silver, 1 Black Worker, and 1 Ship Card in their chosen color. Make sure to place the Ship Card with the 50 VP side facing down. This is what we start with to build our game strategy.
Ah, here we go! Let’s get started. I’m going to break it down for you because it’s always easier to understand step by step.
First off, we need to put a Score Marker for each player on the three ‘0’ spaces around the edge of the board. These markers track each player’s Armour, Valkyrie, and Victory Points. It’s important to keep an eye on those!
Next, take any Black Workers, Player Cards, and Score Markers that you don’t need and put them back in the box along with the Black Bag. We want to keep things tidy and organized.
Now, it’s time to deal the cards. Grab the Townsfolk Draw Pile and deal five cards to each player. But before we dive in, each player has to choose three cards to keep in their hand. The rest of the cards go facedown at the bottom of the Townsfolk Draw Pile.
Alright, let’s find out who’s going first. Both players roll the dice and the one with the highest number gets the honor of starting the game. Luck is on your side!
Lastly, let me introduce you to the Main Supply. It’s where all the important resources are kept. You’ll find everything you need to embark on your Raider journey. Keep an eye on it, because it’s crucial for your success.
There you go! Now you’re ready to jump into the world of Raiders of the North Sea! Have fun and may the best raider win!
Hey there! Let’s dive into the world of The Main Supply. It’s all about limited resources like Silver, Provisions, and Plunder. You can only claim what’s available at the moment, so you gotta make the most of it!
Introducing the Offering Tile Stack
Now, let’s talk about Offering Tiles. They’re all shuffled up and kept face-down. But here’s the catch – if this stack ever runs out, the game is over! Offering Tiles are your ticket to scoring Victory Points. But how do you make offerings? Simple! You just need to collect different sets of Plunder and Silver as shown on each Offering Tile.
Player Supplies: What You Need to Know
As a player, you have some limits to keep in mind. At the end of your turn, you can only hold up to 8 Silver, 8 Provisions, and 8 cards in your hand. But don’t worry, you can collect more than that during your turn itself. However, when it comes to Plunder, there’s no limit. So gather as much as you can!
Let the Game Begin!
When it’s my turn to play, I have two options: I can Work or Raid. The game goes in a clockwise direction, so each player takes their turn in order. We keep playing until one of the three end-game conditions happens. I’ll explain those later, but for now, let me tell you about what I can do on my turn.
If I choose to Work, I can do different actions to advance in the game. Maybe I’ll gather resources or build something. It depends on what I need at the moment. But the important thing is that I’m working to progress.
On the other hand, if I choose to Raid, I’ll try to take advantage of other players. I can attack their territories or steal their resources. It’s a risky move because they might retaliate, but sometimes it’s worth the risk.
So, whether I decide to Work or Raid, my turn will always follow the same pattern. I take my action, and then it’s the next player’s turn. This goes on until someone wins or the game ends. But remember, there are specific conditions that can trigger the end of the game. We’ll get to those later.

- First, I’ll place a Worker and resolve its action.
- Then, I’ll pick up a different Worker and resolve its action.
Working
Having a good Crew and enough provisions are important for a successful raid.
So before I go on any raids, I need to do some work to get my Crew ready and gather supplies. I do all this in the Village at the bottom of the board.
There are 8 different buildings I can visit, each with its own actions. Right now, the Gate House, Town Hall, and Treasury have Workers in them, so I can’t place a Worker there. On my turn, I’ll place my Worker in one of the buildings that’s available. It’s worth mentioning that there are 3 different colors for the Workers, and sometimes the color affects what the building can do.
Hey there! Let me break down the game rules for you! I have different options for where I can place my Worker at the start: the Mill, Barracks, or Silversmith. Each spot gives me a different advantage – the Mill gives me 1 Provision, the Barracks lets me hire 1 Crew Member, and the Silversmith gives me 3 Silver.
If I want to go to the Armory or Long House, I’ll need either a Grey or White Worker. Once I’ve chosen a spot and used its action, I’ll pick up a Worker from a different building and use its action too. I’ll keep that Worker for my next turn.
Here’s an example: Let’s say I start by placing my Worker in the Mill. I’ll take 1 Provision from the Main Supply and add it to my own. Then, I’ll decide to pick up a Worker from the Gate House. This lets me draw 2 new cards from the Townsfolk Draw Pile and add them to my hand.
- One important rule is that I can’t pick up the Worker I just placed.
I bet you’re wondering how to play “Raiders of the North Sea.” Well, let me break it down for you. When it’s your turn, you can choose to place or pick up a Worker without taking the building’s action. Just remember, you can only use each building’s action once per turn, except for the Sage/Long House. So make your choices wisely!
Once you’ve picked up your new Worker and resolved any actions, your turn is done. Then it’s the next player’s turn, and the game continues clockwise. You can either Work or Raid, just like before. It’s up to you!
Now, let’s talk about raiding. When you have enough Crew and Provisions, you can choose to raid a Settlement like a Harbour, Outpost, Monastery, or Fortress. But there are a few requirements you need to meet. You must have:
1. A big enough Crew
2. The right amount of Provisions
3. The right Strength
If you meet all these requirements, you can send your Crew on a raiding mission. Good luck, and may the spoils be plentiful!
When playing Raiders of the North Sea™, it’s crucial to consider several factors to ensure a successful gameplay experience. Let’s explore the key elements you need to keep in mind.
First and foremost, make sure you have enough provisions and gold to conquer monasteries and fortresses. These resources are essential for your journey.
The second thing you need to consider is the required worker color. Different settlements in the game have specific requirements, so paying attention to this detail is essential.
By understanding these fundamental aspects, you can embark on an exciting adventure, raiding and conquering various locations in the game. Remember, strategic planning and resource management are key to achieving victory!

Let’s say there’s a cool Monastery that I want to raid. To do that, I need to have at least 3 hired Crew members, 3 Provisions, 1 Gold, and either a Grey or White Worker.
When I finally decide to raid a Settlement, there are a few steps I need to follow. Just remember that when I’m raiding Harbors, step 3 doesn’t count and I always score 1 Victory Point.
- I need to choose one of the Worker Spots in the Settlement and place my Worker there. That Worker will stay put for the whole game.
- I have to pay up with the required Provisions and Gold to the supply.
- Next, I need to roll the dice and add up the total Military Strength of my crew to see how many Victory Points I can get.
- But wait, there’s more! I can also get additional Victory Points from my Hired Crew.
- Once the dust settles, I can collect my new Worker and Plunder and add it to my supplies.
- Lastly, I need to deal with any Valkyrie actions that may pop up.
By the way, I just wanted to mention that we’ll cover steps 3-6 more in detail on pages 8-9, where we’ll talk about how to score raids.
When I finish my turn in the game, the next player takes their turn. They can choose to Work or Raid, just like I did. Let me give you an example of what a Raid looks like.
Imagine I decide to send my Grey Worker to the Monastery. First, I need to make sure I have enough Crew Members to pull it off. If I do, I pay 3 Provisions and 1 Gold to the Main Supply. Then I roll 2 dice and add up my Military Strength to see how many Victory Points I’ll get. Once I know my score, I collect my Plunder and new Worker and add them to my supply.
Now, let’s talk about scoring Raid Victory Points. There are 3 ways to do it:
1. Military Strength: Your score depends on how strong your military is.
2. Hired Crew: The more Crew Members you have, the more points you’ll earn.
3. Plunder and Valkyrie: Collecting Plunder and Valkyrie cards will give you additional Victory Points.
That’s how Raid scoring works. It’s important to keep these factors in mind when planning your strategy. Good luck on your Viking adventures!
Hey there, let’s talk about Victory Points and Military Strength in Raiders of the North Sea! I’ll break it down for you.
Each Settlement (except Harbors) offers 2 or 3 levels of Victory Points. So, depending on the settlement, you can earn different amounts of Victory Points for your raids. You gotta keep an eye on your Military Strength too, because it’s gonna play a big role in getting those points. Check out the pictures below to see what I mean.

Alright, let’s take a look at the Monastery. It’s an example of a settlement. If you raid this Monastery with at least 12 Military Strength, you’ll get 4 Victory Points. But hey, if you’re tough and you raid with 20 or more Military Strength, you’ll score even more! In that case, you’d earn 6 Victory Points instead. But, here’s the catch: if your Military Strength is less than 12, you won’t get any Victory Points. So, make sure you bring enough muscle!
When you’re raiding, the settlements will tell you how many dice to roll. Normally, it’ll be 1 or 2 dice, but you don’t have to worry about that for Harbors. They have their own way of doing things.

When I tally up my overall Military Strength, I have to consider a few different factors. These factors determine how many Victory Points I earn. Let me break it down for you:
- Rolled dice: Rolling the dice gives me a random number, and the outcome affects my Military Strength. Rolling one die guarantees I have at least 2 Military Strength, while rolling two dice guarantees I have at least 4.
- Hired Crew Strength: Each Hired Crew card has a number at the top left corner, indicating the strength of the crew I’ve hired. This strength contributes to my overall Military Strength.
- Hired Crew Actions: Some Crew cards provide special actions that boost my Military Strength when raiding certain Settlements. I need to pay attention to these actions and take them into account during raids.
- Armour: I can purchase Armour at the Armory using Iron or Silver. This Armour doesn’t get used up during a raid, but it constantly adds to my overall Military Strength.
To determine my total Military Strength, I add up the following components:
Military Strength = Rolled Dice + Crew Strength + Crew Actions + Armour
When I finish calculating my Military Strength, I have to figure out how many Victory Points I earned. This is an important step because Victory Points determine who wins the game. To keep track of my Victory Points, I move my Score Marker around the Victory Point Track.
If my Score Marker ever reaches 50 Victory Points, something special happens. I flip over my Ship Card to reveal the 50 VP side. Then, I reset my Score Marker back to 0 and continue scoring as usual. But now, my total score is 50 plus whatever score I have on the Victory Point Track.
2. Hired Crew

In some cases, when raiding certain Settlements, certain Hired Crew members can provide you with extra Victory Points.
These additional points are separate from the Victory Points you earn based on your Military Strength, and they are added to your overall score in the same way.
3. Plunder and Valkyrie
Once you have received Victory Points for your Military Strength and Hired Crew, it’s time to collect your new Worker and Plunder.
You must choose one set of Plunder from the remaining options in the raided Settlement.
Once all the Plunder has been taken, you won’t be able to raid that specific Settlement anymore (mainly because there won’t be any available Worker Spots).

Plunder, my friend, is the key to victory in this game. At the end of the game, it’s worth precious Victory Points that can swing the tide in your favor.
But don’t underestimate its power during the game itself! Plunder can be spent to fuel your raids or gain additional Victory Points along the way. It’s a versatile resource that can make all the difference.
Of course, you won’t be the only one eyeing the plunder. Some raids may have Valkyrie guarding it, fierce warriors who will put up a fight. Hiring them comes at a cost – your crew members may perish – but it opens up new avenues for scoring Victory Points.
When you decide to take Valkyrie, you need to follow a few steps. It’s a careful dance, but the rewards can be great:

- Every time you take a Valkyrie, you have to get rid of one of your hired crew members. Some of these crew members have special abilities that activate when they’re killed during a raid. These abilities are used right away. If you take more Valkyrie than you have crew members, you can’t score any extra points from them. The extra Valkyrie just go back to the main supply.
- For each Valkyrie you take, you move your score marker up the Valkyrie track. At the end of the game, you get Victory Points for every Valkyrie you’ve taken. You can take more than 7 Valkyrie throughout the game (but it means losing crew members), but you can only score a maximum of 7 (which is worth 15 Victory Points) at the end.
- All the Valkyrie you collect go into the main supply. You don’t get to keep them.
I’m going to tell you about how the game ends, and there are three ways it can happen. First, if there’s only one set of Plunder left in the Fortresses and there’s only one Fortress raid left, that’s one way. Another way is if the Offering Draw Pile is empty. And finally, if there are no Valkyrie left on the board, that’s the third way. When one of these things happens, the current player finishes their turn and resolves any unfinished actions. After that, each player, including the current player, gets one final turn before the game ends. This is called the final round.
Now let’s talk about scoring. Once the game is over, players get extra Victory Points. These are recorded by moving your Score Marker on the Victory Point Track. There are different ways to score points at the end of the game.
Let me tell you about some key elements in the Raiders of the North Sea game that will help you score points and win the game. First, there’s the Valkyrie Track. You score Victory Points based on how high your Score Marker is on this track. The more points you gain, the higher up your marker goes. Look to the right side of the Valkyrie Track to see how many points you’ve earned.
Next up is the Armory Track. This track works just like the Valkyrie Track. You’ll score points based on where your Score Marker is on this track. The higher your marker, the more points you get. So keep an eye on this track as well.
Now, let’s talk about Collected Offering Tiles. These tiles are revealed and their values are added to the Victory Point Track. Each tile adds more points to your total, so make sure to collect them.
Another way to score points is by hiring Crew Members. Some members of your crew earn Victory Points, and their point values are shown on each card. So choose your crew wisely to maximize your points.
Lastly, there’s Plunder. If you have any Plunder, you’ll score points for it. Each Gold is worth 1 Victory Point, each Iron is worth 1 Victory Point, and every 2 Livestock is worth 1 Victory Point. But remember, a single Livestock doesn’t score any points on its own.
So there you have it. These are the key factors that determine how many Victory Points you’ll earn in Raiders of the North Sea. Keep them in mind as you strategize and aim for victory!
When we’re done playing, we all gather around the Victory Point Track and add up our scores. The player who has the highest score at the end is the winner! It feels amazing to come out on top.
But sometimes, two players have the same score. What do we do then? In that case, we have a tie. But don’t worry, we have a way to break the tie and determine a winner. We look at the Valkyrie Track. The player who is the furthest up the track wins! It’s a close call, but someone has to come out ahead.
But what if there’s still a tie? Well, we have another way to settle it. This time, we look at the Armory Track. The player who is the furthest up the track wins the tiebreaker. It’s a race to the top!
So, after we’ve added up our scores and determined a winner, we can all celebrate and congratulate the champion. It’s an exciting moment, full of anticipation and friendly competition. Who will come out on top? Let’s find out!
