How to Play Rack-O

Equipment
To play Rack-o, you’ll need the following:
- A deck of 60 cards numbered from 1 to 60
- Four plastic racks, one for each player
- A scorepad and a pencil to keep track of points
Setting Up
First things first, we need to set up the game. Here’s what you need to do:
- Give each player a rack.
- Shuffle the deck of cards and deal 10 cards to each player. Place them face-down in their racks.
- Put the remaining cards face-down in the center of the table. This will be the draw pile.
- Flip over the top card from the draw pile and place it face-up next to the draw pile. This card starts the discard pile.
Gameplay

Goal of the Game
Your objective is to be the first player to replace the cards in your rack by drawing cards from the pile. You must arrange the cards in numerical order, starting from the lowest number and progressing to the highest number. Take a look at Figure 1 for reference.
Getting Started
Let’s talk about setting up the game of Rack-O. The first thing you need to know is that the cards in Rack-O are numbered from 1 to 60. Depending on the number of players, you will use a specific range of these cards.
Number of Players
If there are 4 players, you will use all 60 cards. If there are 3 players, you will use cards 1 to 50. And if there are only 2 players, you will use cards 1 to 40. (Please refer to the rules if you are playing with 2 players).
Racks
Hey there! Let’s talk about racks. In this game, each player gets their own special rack. These racks have numbers on them like 5, 10, 15, all the way up to 50. But here’s the thing, these numbers are just for scoring!
Deal
Now it’s time to deal the cards. To decide who gets to deal, we each pick a card and the person with the lowest card goes first. The dealer takes the cards, shuffles them up, and gives ten cards to each player.
Important Note: This is where it gets interesting. As soon as a card is dealt, you have to put it in one of the slots in your rack. Here’s the tricky part though: your first card goes in slot number 50, your second card goes in slot number 45, your third card in slot number 40, and so on. You keep doing this until your rack is all filled up with ten cards.
Here’s a picture of a rack jam-packed with cards at the start of a round. It’s worth mentioning that the cards aren’t arranged in any specific order.
Let’s Play
The cards that haven’t been dealt yet (known as the Stockpile) are put face down in the middle of the table. Right beside it, the first card is flipped face up to kickstart the Discard pile. It’s time for us to take turns, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
When playing this game, you have two options for taking a card. You can either choose the top card from the stockpile or take the top card from the discard pile. If you choose the top card from the discard pile, you must exchange it with one of the cards in your rack and then discard the card you swapped. Remember to place the card you exchanged in the same slot where the old card was.
Alternatively, if you decide to take the top card from the stockpile, you can either swap it with a card from your rack or discard it altogether. The choice is yours.
If the stockpile runs out of cards before any player gets a “Rack-O,” don’t worry. The discard pile will be flipped over and used as the new stockpile.
How to Win a Round
So, I bet you’re wondering how to win a round of Rack-O, right? Well, it’s pretty simple, really. A round ends when one player goes Rack-O! You’re probably wondering what that means, so let me explain. To go Rack-O, you need to have all ten cards in your rack arranged in a specific way. The cards have to go from a lower number in the number 5 slot to a higher number in the number 50 slot. But wait, there’s more! You can arrange the cards in any combination of increasingly higher numbers. Cool, right? Here’s a helpful picture to give you an idea of what I’m talking about:

How the Game Ends
Now, here’s the exciting part. When you go Rack-O, you’re not just winning the round, you’re also scoring big points! Can you believe it? You get 75 points in total. That’s 5 points for each of the ten cards in your rack, and an extra 25 points for going Rack-O. So, keep your eyes on the prize and aim for that Rack-O! Good luck!
Let me explain how the scoring works in the game of Rack-o. Each player receives 5 points for the cards in their rack, arranged from lowest to highest. We start counting from the card in the #5 slot and continue until the sequence of higher cards is broken. In Figure 3, for example, the score is 30 points because the card in the #30 slot is followed by the card in the #35 slot.
It’s worth noting that the last four cards in the rack, even if they are arranged correctly, don’t earn any points. Also, there are instances where a player may only score 5 points in a round. This happens when the card in the #10 slot is lower than the card in the #5 slot, even if the other nine cards are in order.
The ultimate goal is to be the first player to reach a total of 500 points or more. Once you achieve this, you win the game!
Now, let’s talk about Partners Rack-o. In this version, four people can play as two teams of two. After each round, the scores of the two partners are combined. The pair that reaches 500 points first is declared the winner.
Lastly, we have Bonus Rack-o. Unfortunately, no further information is available about this variation.
Let me tell you about Bonus Rack-O. The goal is to earn some extra “Bonus” points by creating a sequence of 3 to 6 cards in your rack before achieving Rack-O. It’s a bit more challenging than regular Rack-O because you have to decide if you want to go Rack-O with a score of only 75 or try to improve your rack for a bonus score.
The bonus points are only awarded to the player who goes Rack-O. The opponents receive 5 points for each card in their racks, arranged from lowest to highest.
Here’s how the bonus points are scored for different sequences:
Three Card Run
Score 75 points and get a bonus of 50 points for a total of 125 points.
Four Card Run
Score 75 points and get a bonus of 100 points for a total of 175 points.
Five Card Run
Score 75 points and get a bonus of 200 points for a total of 275 points.
Six (or More) Card Run
In a game of Rack-O, the points awarded are determined by the cards in your rack. If you have 75 points plus a bonus of 400 points, then you will have a total of 475 points.
It’s important to note that if the player who goes Rack-O has two or more runs in their rack, they will only receive a bonus for one of them. The bonus will be awarded for the longest run if there is a difference between the lengths of the runs.
Rack-O for Two Players
If you want to win at the game of Rack-O, there’s a rule you need to know. It’s all about getting a score of 75 points – a big achievement, no doubt. But here’s the twist: you can’t reach that score unless you have a run of at least 3 cards in a row. That means the cards in your rack need to be in sequence, one after another.
Take a look at Figure 4. In this example, you can see a run of 3 cards: 28, 29, and 30. These cards form a sequence, allowing the player to go Rack-O and earn those 75 points.
