Welcome to the Polar Derby Game!

Are you ready to embark on an exciting adventure in the frozen wilderness? Strap on your boots and get ready to race against the elements in the ultimate battle for supremacy. In this game, you have the chance to prove your mettle and become the champion of the Arctic.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the rules. It’s important to understand the guidelines before stepping foot on the icy tracks. The goal of the game is to navigate your way through treacherous terrain and reach the finish line before your opponents.

When someone says “Go!”, the race begins. Grab the reins and steer your trusty sled with skill and precision. Hold on tight as you zigzag through the snow-covered obstacles, avoiding any icy patches that could slow you down. Your sleigh dogs are fast, but it’s up to you to guide them safely to victory.

Now, it’s time to talk about power-ups. Along the course, you’ll encounter various power-ups that can give you an edge over your rivals. Keep your eyes peeled for these special items. They can provide a burst of speed, make you temporarily impervious to obstacles, or even rejuvenate your tired sled dogs.

Remember, strategy is key. Choosing when to use these power-ups can make all the difference between success and failure. Should you save them for a crucial moment, or use them right away to gain an early advantage? It’s up to you to decide.

And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, there are hidden shortcuts scattered throughout the track. These secret paths can shave off precious seconds from your race time, giving you the upper hand. But be careful; these shortcuts are not without risks. Make a wrong turn, and you may find yourself in a slippery situation.

In this game, it’s not just about speed. It’s also about timing and strategy. Pay attention to your opponents’ moves and seize any opportunity to outmaneuver them. A well-executed strategy can propel you from last place to first in the blink of an eye.

So, are you ready to dive into the frozen wilderness and take on the Polar Derby challenge? Grab your parka, buckle up, and get ready for an adrenaline-pumping race like no other. Good luck, and may the best sleigh dog driver win!

Want to score big points? Just roll the dice and collect those high-scoring polar bears!

Setting Up

First things first, unfold that gameboard and put it right in the middle of the playing area. Take all of those cute polar bears, put them randomly on the board, and make sure they’re all standing up on their skates.

Playing the Game

Alrighty, here’s how we play. Whoever was the last to gobble up a bowl of yummy vanilla ice cream gets to start the game, and then we keep going to the left. When it’s your turn, grab those dice and give ’em a roll. You’ll get one of four things:

Split Colors – Grab bears from the middle

When you roll the dice, and they show two different colors, you have a couple of choices. You can grab one polar bear that matches each color, taking a total of two bears from the middle and pulling them towards you. Or, you can choose to take just one bear, but keep in mind that you need to take at least one. However, if there are no polar bears of either color available in the middle, you’ll lose your turn, just like it says in the “Roll Again” section.

Example: Let’s say you have a green die and a blue die. Roll them. If you get a green and a blue polar bear, you can take one from the middle. Cool, right?

Double Colors – Get polar bears from your opponents.

When I roll the dice and see two colors that match, I have a decision to make. I can take two polar bears of that color from my opponents. I have two options when it comes to taking these bears. I can take two bears from one opponent, or I can take one bear from two different opponents. It’s up to me to decide. But keep in mind, even if I only want one bear, I must take at least one. If none of my opponents have a polar bear that matches the colors on the dice, I unfortunately lose my turn. This is explained further under the “Roll Again” section.

Imagine this: You’re playing a game with your friends, and you roll two white dice. When you do, you have a couple of options. You could choose to take two white polar bears from any of your opponents. Or, you could take one white polar bear from one opponent and snag a second white polar bear from another. The choice is yours!

It’s your turn to skate – Pick what you want.

If one of the dice lands on Free Skate, you have the freedom to consider it as any color you like.

For instance, if you roll a pink die and a Free Skate, you have a few options. You can either choose one pink polar bear and one polar bear of any color from the middle, or you can treat the Free Skate as another pink and take two pink polar bears from your opponents.

Double Free Skate – It’s your lucky day! Take another turn.

If both dice land on Free Skate, you can immediately collect all the bears you’ve pulled towards you and take another turn. They’re now safe with you. Remember, if you can’t take at least one bear after a roll, you lose your turn and have to roll again.

Now it’s time to decide whether you want to roll again or end your turn:

Roll Again

Roll both dice again and follow the same steps as before. However, this time you can’t take bears of a color you’ve already collected.

As long as you can take at least one bear in a roll, you can choose to roll again or end your turn. This goes on and on.

It gets more challenging to collect new bears because you can’t choose colors you’ve already collected. So, think strategically!

If you can’t take at least one polar bear after you roll, you lose your turn and have to put back all the polar bears you got during that turn.

Example: When I rolled the dice, I was thrilled to find that I had pulled one polar bear of each color toward me.

So I decided to roll the dice once more, eager to see what I would get this time. And there it was, right in front of me, a shiny new roll.

Having already acquired an orange polar bear from my previous roll, I knew that this time around, I could only hope for a pink polar bear to complete my collection.

I rolled the dice for a third time and here’s what happened:

Since I already have both colored polar bears in front of me, I can’t take any more from the middle. That means I have to give back all the polar bears I pulled towards me and lose my turn. Bummer.

Now, let’s talk about ending your turn. When you decide to do that, you get to keep all the polar bears you pulled towards you. They’re safe now and can’t be taken away on future turns. But watch out! Other players can still steal them if they roll doubles.

Here’s an important thing to remember: if you have polar bears already in your possession, you need to keep the new ones you pull separate. You might end up losing your turn and having to give those new ones back. Only add them to your pile once you’ve successfully ended your turn.

Game Over!

So, what happens when all the polar bears vanish from the center of the playing area? That’s when the game reaches its thrilling conclusion.

Now it’s time to tally up the numbers on your polar bears and see who comes out on top! Add up all the values and the player who has the highest total prevails. But wait, what if there’s a tie? Well, the player who has the most polar bears wins the tiebreaker.

If you’re up for an extended contest, here’s a pro tip: play as many games as there are players. After each game, keep a running record of the scores for each player. In the end, the ultimate champion is the one with the highest overall total.

Variations to Spice Things Up

If you’re playing with younger kids, it’s cool to keep things simple. Just count each polar bear as 1 point at the end of the game.

+No-risk Version: Feeling adventurous? Here’s an alternate twist: if you manage to pull a polar bear closer to you, snatch it up immediately. That bear is now secure in your possession, and you can keep going with your turn, unencumbered by the risk of losing it.
