Let’s Play Outburst!
How to Play Outburst
Hey there! Are you ready to play Outburst? It’s a super fun game where you have to think fast and come up with as many answers as possible. Let me explain how it works.
First, you’ll need a group of friends to play with. Outburst is best enjoyed with a team of people, so gather your crew and get ready to have a blast!
Once you have your team assembled, it’s time to set up the game. One person will be the “outburst master” who will read the topics and keep track of the answers. This person doesn’t play, but they make sure everyone follows the rules.
The outburst master will draw a card that has a topic on it, like “Famous TV Shows.” They will read the topic out loud, and then start the timer. From that moment on, your team has to shout out as many TV shows as they can think of that fit the topic. You only have a limited amount of time, so you need to be quick!
For example, if the topic is “Famous TV Shows,” you might shout out “Friends,” “The Simpsons,” “Game of Thrones,” and so on. You can keep shouting out answers until the timer runs out.
After the timer stops, the outburst master will read a list of correct answers that they have prepared in advance. If your team shouted out any of the correct answers, you get a point for each one. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!
It’s important to remember that the goal of Outburst is to come up with as many answers as you can, not just the most popular ones. So don’t worry if you think your answer might be a bit obscure – it still counts!
Outburst is a fast-paced game that requires quick thinking and a good knowledge of different topics. But don’t worry if you’re not an expert on everything – the fun comes from the different answers that people come up with. You might be surprised by what your friends can think of!
So gather your friends, set up the game, and get ready for a wild time playing Outburst. You’ll laugh, you’ll shout, and you’ll have a blast coming up with all sorts of answers. So what are you waiting for? Let’s play Outburst!

Let me tell you about Outburst, a truly exciting game about different topics. The game consists of cards, each containing a topic and 10 possible answers. But here’s the catch – only one side of the card is used at a time, so there’s plenty of variety and surprise!
Now, let’s talk about how Outburst is played. The game is meant for teams, no matter how many people are playing. You’ll have to divide yourselves into two teams and make sure everyone in each team sits together (unless, of course, you’ve just had some spicy chili!). This way, the teams can coordinate and strategize together.
I have to warn you, though. Outburst can get a little crazy and addictive! To keep things in order, it’s important to appoint a Master of Ceremonies (or M.C. for short). This person will be responsible for maintaining the flow of the game, choosing topics, keeping score, and making sure everything runs smoothly. It’s crucial that the M.C. is someone authoritative and honest – we don’t need any sneaky politicians here!
So here’s the deal: you and your team are tasked with figuring out as many of the target answers as you can. And guess what? Every right answer you come up with earns you a sweet point. Easy, right?
What’s in the box?

- Outburst Topic Cards in Box
- Card Viewer
- Score Card
- 2 Scoring Glides
- Timer
- 6 Pass Chips
- 10-Sided Die
- 6-Sided die
- Rulebook
So, you wanna know how to play this game, huh? Well, let me tell you something. Most folks learn by watching others play, not by reading some dusty rulebook. But eventually, even the most clueless player has to dive into those dreaded rules. Because, let’s face it, the people you learn from? They don’t have a clue!
Setting Things Up
- Empty out the entire box, my friend.
- Form two teams. Oh, and don’t worry if one team is a player short.
- Each team gets their paws on 3 passing chips and 1 scoring glide.

- On the score card, you’ll find two tracks for scoring – one for each team. Take the scoring glide and attach it to the matching side of the score card, with the arrowhead on top. Slide it to begin the game.
- Now, let’s unwrap the TOPIC Cards and set the box aside. The M.C. (that’s me!) will take the Card Viewer and slide all 10 buttons away from the center, hiding the markers. This is the starting position.
- It’s time to determine which team goes first. One member from each team will roll the white 10-sided die. The number 0 on the die corresponds to #10. The team with the highest roll will start the game.

Welcome to the Game Play
Hey there! I’m the M.C., also known as the game master. My role is to make sure everything runs smoothly and no one cheats (not even me!).
Here’s how it works: I’ll select a TOPIC Card from the box. But don’t worry, I won’t look at the answers or the TOPIC on the back of the card. I want to keep things fair and square. Then, I’ll turn to your team and read the TOPIC out loud. After that, it’s decision time. Are you ready to “Play It” or would you rather “Pass It”? You’ve got 30 seconds to make up your mind.
Let’s Get in the Game
![]() Take a Look |
So, let’s say you’re excited about the TOPIC I read, and your team decides to “Play It”. Great choice!
Now, I’ll hand the TOPIC card and the Card Viewer to a member of the opposing team. They’ll be the Scorekeeper for this round.
![]() Timer |
Alright, here’s how it works. When it’s your turn, someone from the other team will slide the TOPIC Card into the Card Viewer. You’ll be able to see the answers you need to guess. Then, the other team member with the Viewer reads out the TOPIC once more.
Now, pay attention because things are about to get wild! Once the timer is flipped, you’ve got one minute to come up with as many answers as possible for the TOPIC. And remember, you can shout out your answers all at once. Trust me, it can really get on the nerves of the other team, especially the one keeping score.
Every time you shout out an answer, the Scorekeeper will let you know if it’s a “yes” or a “no” based on whether it matches any of the target answers on the card. Keep that in mind as you go!
When the Scorekeeper shouts “yes,” I quickly move the button next to that answer to show my progress. It’s helpful to have a teammate beside me, watching for the answers on the card.
Once the timer runs out, I am responsible for reading aloud the answers that were not given. I also announce how many correct answers we got. I slide my SCORING GLIDE on the score card one space for each correct answer.
Remember: If there’s a dispute over an answer, and someone claims it was given but wasn’t heard by the Scorekeeper, we should be forgiving. After all, it’s just a game! Plus, we can always settle the score later!
![]() Die |
Before the round ends, let’s see if anyone won any Bonus Points. Someone from the team can roll both dice for us.
The white 10-sided die represents one of the ten possible answers on the card (the “0” represents answer #10). The blue die tells us how many Bonus Points we can earn.
If the team correctly guesses the answer that matches the number on the white die, they earn the Bonus Points shown on the blue die.
For example, imagine the white die shows an 8 and the blue die shows a 2. If the team got the number 8 answer right, they earn 2 Bonus Points. But if they got it wrong… too bad!
Now, onto the next topic: Passing It.
If you don’t like the topic the M.C. (that’s me!) chooses, you can “Pass It”. Just say, “We’ll pass it to the other team” and put one pass chip out of play. You can do this three times per game.
I’ll put the passed topic aside and pull out a replacement topic for your team to play right away. You can’t pass on a replacement topic.
After your team finishes the replacement topic, your opponents will play the topic you passed to them. Remember: They have time to think while you play the replacement.
Note: You can’t pass a topic that was passed to you.
End of the Game
The first team to reach 60 points wins and gets to be the winners!
