How Ligretto Works: A Fast-Paced Card Game

In the game of Ligretto, things move quickly. No waiting for turns here. All players jump in and start playing cards simultaneously, as fast as they can.

To kick off the action, one player shouts, “Ligretto!” This signals the start of the round, and everyone begins placing cards from their own row or hand onto the table.

The goal is to create piles in the middle of the table, with each pile starting with a 1 card and continuing in numerical order until it reaches a stack of 10 cards, all of the same color. Here’s how the card play works:

1. You can start a new pile with a 1 card. This card can come from your row or your hand.
2. Once there are already existing piles on the table, you can play any legal card onto a pile. Just make sure it’s the next highest card in numerical order and matches the color of the rest of the cards in that pile.

If I don’t have any 1 cards in my Row or no cards that I can play, then I have to grab three cards from the top of my Hand and flip them over, but I can only reveal the top card. If that card isn’t playable, then I have to keep grabbing three cards from my Hand and revealing only the top card until I find one that I can play.

Whenever I play a card from my Row, I immediately fill that space by taking the top card from my Ligretto Stack and placing it in the Row, replacing the card I just played.

Once a card Pile is complete with a 10 card on top, no more cards can be played on that Pile.

I can play my cards to any Pile, regardless of who started the Pile, as long as the card I play is a legal move.

1. If I’ve played all the cards in my Hand, I have to flip the deck and start dealing again from the top.
2. If there comes a moment when no one can play any cards from their Hand, Row, or Ligretto Stack, we hit the pause button. All players can quickly shuffle their Hand, yell “Ligretto!” and begin the round anew.

The Round is Over

When all the cards have been played from my Ligretto Stack and I have no more cards left, I shout, “Stop!” This signals the end of the round, and no more cards can be placed on the Piles.

Scoring

Once a round is over, you keep your Rows and Hands but leave your Ligretto Stack as it is.

The cards in the middle of the table are then sorted into their respective decks based on the patterns on the back of the cards.

1. For each card you played to the middle of the table, you earn 1 point, regardless of the number on the card.
2. Next, you subtract 2 points for each card left in your Ligretto Stack. The cards in your Row and Hand don’t count toward your score.
3. All players’ scores are calculated for that round. After collecting and shuffling your 40-card deck, dealing out the Ligretto Stack and Row as instructed earlier, a new round begins.

End of the Game

The winner of the game is the first player to reach 99 points. If multiple players score 99 points in the same round, the player with the highest total score wins.

Let’s talk about an advanced way to play. You can add more cards to the Row from the Ligretto Stack and the Hand, but they must be placed in decreasing order. So, you can put an 8 on top of a 9 or a 4 on top of a 5. However, the alternating cards in the Row must have different colors. For example, you can place a green 9 on top of a yellow 10, but not a blue 5 on top of a blue 6.

Just remember not to overcrowd the Row with too many cards, or else you won’t have enough space to fill the gaps with cards from the Ligretto Stack.
