How to play Kozo Official Rules

Kozo Game Rules

When setting up the game, I recommend placing the Base in the center of the table. It’s important to separate and place the Polycubes, Scoring Tiles, and Balance Cubes off to the side of the play area.

Let’s Play

Now, let’s talk about how the game is played. It’s actually quite simple! Here are the steps for each turn:

  1. First, you’ll place one Polycube on the Base. Just make sure to follow the Placement Rules when you do this.
  2. Next, you’ll place one Balance Cube on any Polycube that’s already on the Base.
  3. After that, you’ll score points for the Polycube you just placed by taking the corresponding Scoring Tile. Each Polycube is made up of two or more smaller cubes, and its value is determined by its size. For example, a Polycube with five smaller cubes is worth five points.

Polycubes and Scoring Tiles

Rules for Placing Polycubes

  • Imagine the Base as a tower surrounding a central “chimney”. The tower is made up of eight squares, with the chimney in the center. Make sure the chimney is always free.
  • Polycubes can only be placed within the eight squares of the Base.
  • Don’t position any part of a Polycube on or over the center square.
  • Do not place a Polycube on a Balance Cube.
  • Polycubes can hang over a Balance Cube, as long as they don’t touch directly.
  • You can place Balance Cubes on any Polycube, not just the one you placed on your turn.
  • Don’t stack Balance Cubes on top of each other or place them beneath a Polycube.
  • When placing a Balance Cube on a Polycube, make sure it doesn’t extend beyond the edges of the Polycube.

When I’m picking a Polycube from the stack, I have to stick with my choice once I’ve touched it. I can’t touch or move the Base or the tower that we’re building, that’s against the rules. After I finish my turn, 5 seconds later, it’s the next player’s job to make sure the tower stays standing. Once I’ve successfully placed a Polycube and a Balance Cube, I’ll get the Scoring Tile that goes with the Polycube.

Game Over

We’re playing three rounds of this game.

A round ends if:

  1. The tower falls because of you, or
  2. All the Polycubes available are used up.

If the tower falls on your turn, you lose all your points for that round. Once we’ve completed three rounds, the player with the most total points wins the game.

Kozo Game Twists

These twists add more challenge to the regular game of Kozo. You can try one or combine both of these variations.
