What You Need to Know About the Just Desserts Game Rules
If you’re a fan of board games and you have a sweet tooth, then I have the perfect game for you. It’s called Just Desserts, and it’s all about satisfying your cravings for delicious treats. In this game, you get to play as a waiter or waitress in a fancy restaurant, trying to match hungry customers with their favorite desserts.
So, how does the game work? Well, it’s pretty simple. Each player takes turns being the waiter or waitress, and their goal is to collect as many dessert cards as possible. The dessert cards have different flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, and each one has a different point value. The waiter or waitress must choose a dessert card from the center of the table and offer it to a customer. The customer will either accept the dessert or reject it, based on their preferences. If the customer accepts the dessert, the player gets to keep the card and earn points. If the customer rejects the dessert, the player must discard the card.
At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins. However, there’s a catch. Some dessert cards have special abilities that can help or hinder your progress. For example, there’s a dessert card called “Just Desserts” that allows you to steal a dessert card from another player. On the other hand, there’s a dessert card called “Bad Review” that forces you to discard one of your dessert cards.
In addition to the dessert cards, there are also customer cards that determine each customer’s preferences. The customer cards have different icons that represent their favorite flavors. For example, a customer with a chocolate icon prefers chocolate desserts. The waiter or waitress must try to match the customer’s preferences with the available dessert cards.
Now that you know the basics of how the game works, it’s time to start playing. Gather your friends or family, set up the game board, and let the dessert madness begin. Just remember to keep an eye out for those special dessert cards and always try to satisfy your customers’ cravings. Good luck and enjoy your Just Desserts!

Components
The game comes with:
- 100 Cards
- Instructions
Setup
First, let’s get everything ready:
Take the Dessert cards and mix them up. Each player should receive three Dessert cards. Place them face-down in front of each player.
Now, let’s set up the center of the table:
Take the Guest cards and shuffle them as well. Then, select three Guest cards and place them face-up in the middle of the table.
Make sure both decks are within everyone’s reach and create a discard pile next to each deck.
Hey there! I’m going to explain how to play a cool game called “Dessert Guest.” The person who served dessert to everyone lately gets to go first.
Let’s Play
Step One: Drawing Cards
When it’s your turn, you need to draw a card from the Dessert deck and add it to your hand. Then, reveal the next card on the Guest deck and put it in the middle of the table.
Step Two: Options
After drawing cards, you have three options to choose from:
- Satisfy Up To Two Guests: You can discard one or more Dessert cards. Get rid of as many as needed to satisfy all the cravings of a specific Guest. But be careful not to give them anything they refuse to eat. Once you satisfy a Guest, move them in front of you.
- Go Back To The Kitchen: Draw an extra card to give yourself an advantage.
- Dump Your Tray: Discard as many cards from your hand as you like, and then draw the same number of cards back.
I have three desserts in front of me: Carrot Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, and Butter Pecan Ice Cream. The Little Girl is only interested in having Ice Cream and Cake, not vegetables.
The only way to win her over is by offering her Butter Pecan Ice Cream and Strawberry Shortcake. She refuses the Carrot Cake because it has vegetables, but she doesn’t seem to mind the nuts in the Butter Pecan Ice Cream.
About Me and Some Advice

When you serve a Guest their Favorite dish, you get an extra Dessert card, which translates into an extra tip for you.
Pay attention to the symbols on the Favorite cards, as they indicate which Guests love Desserts.
Getting Rid of Guests
Each Guest belongs to a specific group (or suit), with four Guests in each group.
If, at the end of your turn, there are duplicate Guests in the center, you must remove them until there is only one Guest from each group left. It’s up to you to decide which Guests get to stay and which ones need to leave your cafe.
Keep in mind that the most recently removed Guest, the one on top of the discarded pile, is considered to be “standing in the doorway”. This Guest can also be served, so think twice about who you put on top of the discard pile.
Once you finish removing Guests from play, your turn is over. You don’t have a maximum limit for how many cards you can have in your hand.
Suiting up Guests
Shuffling the Deck
Whenever one of the decks runs out of cards, we need to shuffle the discard pile and start using it again. When we shuffle the Guests, we take the top card from the old discarded-Guest pile and use it to create a new pile.
Ending the Game
You win the game if, at any point, the set of Guests in your possession includes either:
- three Guests of the same suit
- five Guests of different suits
Advanced Game Rules
Once you and your friends become experts at playing the game, you might want to make it even more challenging and exciting by introducing these extra rules. But before you begin, make sure everyone understands and agrees to these options.
Start by adding the Poaching & Blocking rules. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try Opening a Buffet or hosting a Surprise Party.
Poaching and Blocking
During your turn, you have the opportunity to steal a Guest from another player. This can only be done once, and you can either serve Guests in the center or attempt to poach a Guest from someone else.
The other player can try to block your poaching attempt by discarding cards from their hand to satisfy the Guest again. If they successfully block you, you have to take back the Desserts you were trying to serve.
So, here’s the deal – if you tried to poach a Guest but got blocked, you can’t try again in the same turn. Tough luck, but you can still serve two Guests from the middle, just like always.
Now, if you were successful in your poaching attempt, congrats! You can serve a second Guest from the center, just like usual.
Here’s something interesting: when you poach with a Guest’s favorite dessert, you can’t be blocked unless the other player blocks with the Guest’s alternate favorite. But that only works for Guests who have two favorites. Sneaky, huh?
If someone manages to steal your Guest, don’t worry. You get to draw an extra card as a little “tip” from the leaving Guest. And if you serve a Guest their favorite dessert, you get a tip too! That means if you successfully poach a Guest or block their favorite, you’ll get a little something extra.
However, if you try to poach with a favorite and end up getting blocked, you don’t get a tip. After all, you didn’t actually serve them anything.
Now, let’s talk about opening a buffet.
Hey there! I’ve got an awesome trick to share with you. It’s called the “4th turn option.” Let me tell you all about it.
So, here’s the deal. If you have four single-flavor Desserts, which by the way are called Aces, you can do something really cool. You can choose to discard those Aces and make all the other players move one of their satisfied Guests back into the middle. It’s like a surprise switcheroo!
Now, here’s what you get in return for your trick. You get to draw three more cards, giving you more choices and options. After that, you can serve one unclaimed Guest. How awesome is that?
Oh, and there’s more!
Let’s talk about “Surprise Parties.” So, imagine this scenario: another player satisfies a Guest with Desserts that are not their favorite. Well, guess what? You can totally intercept that Guest out of turn! How? By saying “Surprise!” and offering them their favorite Dessert. How cool is that?
Now, here’s the catch. When you intercept the Guest, the other player has to put the unused Desserts back in their hand. They can’t use them. But don’t worry, they can still try to make another move, maybe even try to poach a different Guest. So, it’s all in good fun!
So, here’s the thing: sometimes, when you’re hosting a party, people can be sneaky. They might not show their true colors right away, but they could try to take your guests from you when it’s their turn. It’s like a game within a game!
But don’t worry, I’ve got some tips for you. If someone tries to steal one of your guests with a surprise move, you can use one of your favorite cards to block them. And if another player comes along and tries to surprise with their own favorite, the guest will always pick the first option they’re offered, whether it’s a block or a surprise. It’s all about timing!
Oh, and here’s a little secret: at surprise parties, you don’t get an extra card for using a favorite. It’s the only time you don’t get that bonus. So, no tipping allowed at surprise parties!
