Hoot Owl Hoot! Game Rules
Welcome to the wonderful world of Hoot Owl Hoot! In this game, we work together to help our owls return to their nest before the sun comes up. It’s a game of strategy, teamwork, and a little bit of luck. Are you ready to play?
The goal of Hoot Owl Hoot! is simple: get all the owls back to their nest before sunrise. Each owl has a special colored space on the game board, and our job is to move the owls along the colored paths to reach their corresponding nest. But be careful, because there are some challenges along the way!
When it’s your turn, I will give you a colored card. You can move any owl to the next available spot of that color. If you don’t have a matching colored space available, you can play any color card and move an owl to any non-matching colored space. That’s a little trick we call a “sun” card.
But remember, we must work as a team. We can help each other by playing strategy cards. These cards allow us to move owls to different spaces, skip a turn, or even fly owls backwards. Use them wisely to plan our moves and keep the owls on track.
As night turns into day, the sun will rise closer and closer to our nest. We must move quickly to get all the owls back home before sunrise. If we succeed, we all win the game together. But if the sun rises before all the owls are home, we lose as a team.
Hoot Owl Hoot! is a game that teaches us the values of teamwork, problem-solving, and patience. It’s a game for all ages, and I guarantee it will provide hours of fun and excitement for everyone. So gather your friends, your family, or even your fluffy stuffed animals, and let’s embark on this owl-tastic journey together!

Hey there! The young owls went on a little adventure through the deep, dark forest at night. They had a blast, but now they need to fly back to their nest before the sun comes up. Can you lend a hand and make sure they get home safely?
The goal of the game is for all of us to work together to bring the owls back to their nest before the sun rises. We’re a team and we all win or lose together!
Just remember: Hoot Owl Hoot is what we call a “cooperative” game. This means that we all work together towards the same outcome. So if one of us can do something on their turn to help the next person, that’s awesome! It’s like we’re being really nice and sharing with each other.
Getting Started
Hey there! Let’s dive into the exciting world of this game. I’m going to break it down into three levels for you:
Beginner Level – You’ll start by playing with three Owls, placing them in start spaces 1, 2, and 3. Sounds easy, right?
Intermediate Level – Ready to step it up a notch? In this level, you’ll play with four Owls, starting in spaces 1, 2, 3, and 4. Can you handle the challenge?
Challenge Level – This is where things get really interesting. You’ll be playing with a whopping six Owls, starting in spaces 1 through 6. Are you up for it?
No matter which level you choose, make sure to place the Sun Token on the sun start space. Now let’s get into the nitty-gritty of how to play.
First, shuffle the cards. Each player gets three cards, which they keep face up in front of them. The rest of the cards go face down to create a draw pile.
Next, you’ll need a discard pile. Keep it next to the draw pile.
Alright, youngest player, it’s your time to shine. Start the game and keep the play going clockwise.
How to Play the Game
Hey there! So you want to know how to play this awesome cooperative game? Well, let me break it down for you!
First things first, since we’re all in this together, we can move any Owl on our turn. Pretty cool, right? Teamwork makes the dream work!
Now, here’s what you need to do step by step:
- Careful Consideration: Take a good look at your hand of cards. It’s time to put our heads together and come up with a plan to get these Owls back home! Communication is key, so let’s talk it out and decide which Owl to move.
- Move That Owl: Once we’ve made our decision, it’s time to put the plan into action! Choose the Owl we want to move and move it to the desired space. Slow and steady wins the race!
- Celebrate Small Victories: Hooray! We made progress! Now, it’s the next player’s turn to follow the same steps. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work, so let’s keep going until all our Owls are safely home.
And that’s how you play this cooperative game! Easy, right? Just remember to work together, communicate, and celebrate every small victory along the way. We got this!

- First, I play a card from my hand and then put it in the discard pile.
- Then, I choose to move either an Owl or the Sun Token.
- After that, I draw a new card.
If I have a Sun Card in my hand, I MUST play it on my turn. When I play it, I move the Sun Token up one space on the sunrise track. Then I draw a card. That’s my whole turn.
If I don’t have a Sun Card in my hand, I play a Color Card by moving one of the Owls to the next unoccupied space that matches the Color Card I played (always moving forward toward the nest).
For example, if I have a yellow Color Card, I move any Owl from any space to the next open yellow space on the board.
If the next matching color space is already taken by another Owl, the Owl I am moving flies over that Owl to the next space of the same color.
Have you ever wondered if you can travel long distances in a unique and fun way? Well, I have amazing news for you! It is possible to do just that by moving along colored pathways and even flying over multiple Owls at once.
Imagine this: you find yourself standing on a colorful pathway, and you spot several Owls along the way. If the Owls are on the same color as the pathway you want to reach, you can simply fly over them to get to your destination faster than ever. How cool is that?
This method can be a fantastic way to ensure the Owls get back home in no time. So the next time you find yourself on a colored pathway with Owls blocking your way, don’t worry! Just hop on, spread your wings, and fly past them to reach your destination in the blink of an eye.

Hey there! Let’s have some fun and say “HOOT!” every time we fly over an Owl. It’s like a friendly greeting to our feathered friends!
When all the spaces that match the color of the card played are occupied, an Owl swoops into the nest.
The Game Ends
If all the Owls safely reach the nest before the Sun Token reaches the end of the track (before the Sun rises), we win! Yay!
Uh-oh! If the Sun Token reaches the last space before all the Owls make it home, the Sun has risen and we lose. Don’t worry! We can always shuffle the Owls back to the beginning and try again.
Here are some hints to help us out:
Make sure our Owls don’t fall too far behind because catching up can be tough. It’s always a good idea to play the same color multiple times in a row.
This way, our Owls can fly over other Owls and make it to the nest faster. We should also team up and talk about the best moves to get our Owls back to the nest. Together, we can do it!
