High Bohn Game Rules
Welcome to the world of High Bohn! I’m here to help you understand the rules of the game.
Let’s start with the basics. In High Bohn, you’ll navigate the challenging task of managing a bean field. Yes, you heard that right – beans! This might sound a bit odd, but trust me, it’s a lot of fun.
The goal of the game is to collect the most gold coins by successfully growing and trading beans. To do this, you’ll need to strategize and make wise decisions.
Here’s how it works. Each player starts with a hand of bean cards. These cards represent the types of beans you can grow. You’ll need to carefully choose which beans to plant in your field and when to harvest them.
As you grow your beans, you can trade them with other players to acquire more valuable beans or complete sets. Completing sets of beans gives you extra gold coins, which can give you a big advantage in the game.
Trading beans can be a risky business, though. Some players may try to exploit your trading offers, so be aware of their tactics. It’s all about finding the right balance between giving and taking.
Throughout the game, you’ll have opportunities to buy new fields and expand your bean empire. Be careful, though, as managing multiple fields can be challenging. It’s important to stay focused and not get overwhelmed.
One key aspect of the game is the beanometer – a track that measures the demand for different types of beans. The market for beans fluctuates, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on the beanometer and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Remember, the ultimate goal is to collect the most gold coins. So, make sure you’re always thinking ahead and making the best possible decisions.
Now that you have a good understanding of the rules, it’s time to dive into the world of High Bohn! Gather your friends, grab a deck of cards, and let the bean-growing adventure begin. Have fun and may the beans be ever in your favor!

Hey there! Welcome to this Bohnanza expansion where you get to invest your harvest profits in buildings near the Bohnderosa Ranch in Virginia City. It’s an exciting opportunity to grow your game!
These buildings come with special attributes that can benefit you during the game and even at the end. Speaking of the end, the biggest landowners also get bonus thalers to boost their fortunes.
But that’s not all! This expansion introduces new buildings and the tantalizing Cognac beans. You’ll discover fresh strategies and tactics to up your game and seize victory!
So, here’s the deal: The player with the most thalers by the end wins. Count up your earnings stack, add in any bonus you nabbed, and throw in the thalers invested in buildings. It all adds up to victory!
The Game Components
- There are 36 building cards
- There are 22 Cognac beans
- There are 5 summary cards
- You will find the instructions included
How to Set Up the Game
When you play High Bohn, you’ll need to gather all the different types of beans, except for the cocoa, coffee, and wax beans, as well as the “3rd bean field” cards from the basic game. Once you have all of these, you’re ready to start!

So here’s the thing. You know that expansion pack you got for the game? Well, you’ll need to use the building cards that match the types of beans you have in the basic game. It’s all about making sure everything fits together, you know?
Now, there are a couple of cards you won’t need for this round. Those Cognac bean cards and the four distillery building cards? Yeah, leave those in the box. They’re for a different variant of the game, so we won’t be using them this time.
Getting everything ready is simple. Just like in the basic game, you’ll want to sort all the building cards by type and price, and then set them aside. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a summary card for yourself as well!
Let’s Talk Buildings
Each type of bean has its own special building. Take the Saloon, for example. That one goes with the green beans. And the bank? Well, that one belongs to the black-eyed beans.
Now, each building comes with four cards. And on those cards, you’ll see a price – one, two, three, or four thalers. The more thalers it costs, the more valuable the building is. It’s all about the perks, my friend.
Keep in mind: even if you decide to get rid of your thalers by discarding buildings, don’t worry – they still contribute to your final score!
A Quick Guide to Building Cards: (for example, let’s take a look at the “4 Bank” card)

How to Buy Building Cards
When you want to buy a building card, you need to spend thalers that match the bean type shown on the card. For example, if you want to buy one of the four Saloons, you will need to spend thalers with green beans on the other side. If you want to buy one of the banks, you will need to spend thalers with black-eyed beans on the other side.
Remember: This is different from the basic game, where the bean shown on the other side of a thaler doesn’t matter. In the building card game, the price of a building is shown by the golden stack of thalers at the bottom of the card.
For instance, if you want to buy the 3 Saloon, it will cost you 3 thalers, but each thaler must have a green bean on the other side. Similarly, if you want to buy the 1 Bank, it will cost you one thaler with a black-eyed bean on the other side.
When playing this game, remember that you can only buy one building of each type. So, for example, you can only have one saloon or one bank. However, you can buy multiple buildings at once if you have enough thalers.
There’s no specific order in which you have to buy the buildings. The price of a building doesn’t determine the order in which they are bought.
Here’s the interesting part: you can buy buildings at any time, even when it’s not your turn. If multiple players want to buy the same building at the same time, the player who is currently taking their turn gets priority. If they don’t want the building, then the other players have priority in a clockwise order.
When you buy a building, you place the bean thalers you paid on the disc aid stack. And the best part is that you can immediately start using the building’s attribute once you’ve bought it.
Let’s Play with Building Cards!
When it’s my turn to play, I follow four phases, just like in the basic game:
- In the 1st phase, I plant bean card(s).
- In the 2nd phase, I draw, trade, and donate bean cards.
- In the 3rd phase, I plant the beans I’ve drawn, traded, and donated.
- In the 4th phase, I draw new bean cards.
However, the game can get even more exciting with the different buildings I own. These buildings have special attributes that can change or even cancel the usual rules of the basic game, but keep in mind that these attributes only affect me, the building owner.
The 1 buildings don’t have any special attributes during the game. But don’t worry, they still offer something to their owners at the end of the game. Just like all the other building cards, I can earn bonus points for my buildings when the game ends (check out GAME END to learn more).
It’s interesting how the number of players affects the game. Let’s find out what happens with the building cards:
- If there are three players: we pay attention to when two players each have a building of the same type, like the 2 farm and the 4 farm. The other two buildings of this type, the 1 farm and the 3 farm, are removed from the game. So, the third player can’t buy a farm building.
- If there are four players: we look at the situation when three players each have a building of the same type, for example, the 1, 3, and 4 banks. The fourth building of that type, the 2 bank, is removed from the game. Therefore, the fourth player cannot purchase a bank building.
When you’re playing with five people, there’s a special rule – no buildings will be removed from the game. This means that players can keep buying buildings of a certain type until they’re all gone. However, if the fourth building of that type gets bought, the fifth player won’t be able to buy any more of that type.
Now let’s talk about the buildings themselves. Buildings with the numbers 2, 3, and 4 have special abilities that can change the game rules. These abilities are explained on the cards. Let me give you some more details:
First, we have the Garden Bean ‘ Gold Mine.

Hey there! I’ve got an interesting fact for you. The person who owns the 2 Gold mine only has to pay 1 thaler for a “3rd bean field”. Can you believe it?
Now, here’s something even cooler. The owner of the 3 Gold mine uses the beanometer on the gold mine card instead of the one on the garden bean cards when they’re ready to harvest garden beans.
But wait, there’s more! They can even harvest a single garden bean even if other fields have more beans. Sounds like a sweet deal, right?
Lastly, we have the 4 Gold mine, which is an extra bean field. If the owner decides to buy a “3rd bean field”, they’ll end up with four bean fields in total. Talk about having a bean empire!

Red Bean ‘ Indian Tipi
When the game ends, if you own an Indian tipi, you can get more money (called a “thaler”) from the discard stack. The amount of money you get depends on how many thalers you have in your earnings stack. If you have 8, 6, or 5 thalers, you’ll earn some extra thalers based on which Indian tipi you own.
Black-eyed Bean ‘ Bank

When playing the card game, it’s crucial to use the Bank attribute at the specified time. If you don’t use it when indicated, you won’t be able to use it later.
Soy Bean Farm

When you have a 2 Farm, you have a special ability: you can plant soy beans in a field that already has other beans numbered 14 or higher.
There is a limitation, though. If a soy bean is already in a field, you can’t use the 2 Farm for that field. But don’t worry! You’re still able to plant both kinds of beans in the field until it’s time to harvest.
However, there are a few restrictions for the owner of a 2 Farm. You can’t use this ability with a bean stew field (you can refer to the 3 and 4 Saloon for more information). Additionally, as with other players, you always have to plant at least one bean card in phase 1 when using the 3 Farm. But here’s a fun twist: you can choose to plant two or three bean cards in phase 1 instead of just two!
Now, let’s talk about the 4 Farm. With this attribute, when you harvest a field that would normally earn you 4 thalers, you actually earn an impressive 5 thalers instead. It’s a great bonus for your hard work!
The 4 Farm attribute works exceptionally well in conjunction with several other buildings. Take the 3 Saloon, 4 Saloon, and 3 Jail as examples. When you own both the 4 Farm and the 3 Jail, you have the opportunity to harvest eight blue beans, totaling 5 thalers.
The 1 Saloon and Green Beans

When you’re playing the game of beans, the 2 Saloon is a special “3rd bean field.” It’s like a secret garden, but for green beans only. So, if you want to plant beans there, they’ve got to be green.
Now, here’s the twist: the rules for harvesting in this field are a bit different. You see, if the 2 Saloon has at least 2 beans, you can’t just pluck a single one. That would be a no-no. And it’s the same if there are 2 or more beans in any other field – you can’t take just one when the 2 Saloon is looking so lush.

Have you ever wanted to bend the rules and do something unconventional in a game? Well, that’s exactly what you can do at the saloon in this game. You see, at the saloon, you have the ability to plant two fields of green beans, as long as one of them is the 2 saloon.
Now, if you happen to be the owner of a 3 or 4 saloon, you have an interesting option available to you. You can choose to plant one bean of each different type in one or more of your fields. The catch is that you can’t have 2 beans of the same type in any of those fields. This planting technique is aptly named bean stew.
When it comes time to harvest a bean stew field, you’ll need to use the beanometer found on your 2 or 3 saloon card. This handy tool will determine the amount of thalers you earn from the harvest. You then place these thalers under the saloon and remember, you can’t use them to purchase buildings or a 3rd bean field.
At the end of the game, these thalers are added to your earnings stack, right before the Indian tipi is applied. Oh, and here’s a cool feature: when you buy a 3 or 4 saloon, you can immediately activate its special attribute in a regular field with just one bean planted. This will transform the field into a bean stew field.

If you own a 2, 3, or 4 General Store, you can keep one, two, or three beans (depending on which general store you have) right on the general store card.
The General Store can hold beans that you play in phase 1, draw from the draw deck in phase 2, or receive in trades or donations in phase 3, that you don’t want to plant.
You can only trade or donate the beans stored in your general store to other players. You can never plant the beans stored in your general store on any of your bean fields.
Additionally, if you receive a bean (either in trade or as a donation) from another player’s general store, you must plant it and you can’t put it in your general store.
Chili Bean’ Blacksmith

Imagine this: The 2 Hacksmith is known as the “3rd bean field,” but with a twist. Here, you can only plant chili beans. And just like any other field, there are rules to follow when harvesting. You can’t harvest a single bean from the 2 Hacksmith if there are already 2 or more beans in other fields.
But that’s not all. When the 2 Hacksmith has 2 or more beans, you can’t harvest a single bean from any other field either. However, the 2 Hacksmith offers a special benefit. You can break the rule and have two fields with chili beans, as long as one of them is the 2 Hacksmith.
Now, let’s talk about the other blacksmiths. The owner of the 3 Blacksmith uses the beanometer on the 3 Blacksmith card to measure the harvest of chili beans, instead of using the beanometer on the chili bean cards.
And finally, the owner of the 4 Blacksmith has a special privilege. They can harvest a field with just one bean, and it can be any bean type.
Oh, and one more thing. There’s something called the Blue Bean ‘Jail.’ But that’s a story for another time.

When I own the 2 or 3 Jail, I use the beanometer on my 2 or 3 jail card to measure the blue beans I harvest, instead of using the beanometer on the blue bean cards. It’s a special privilege I have as the owner of the 2 or 3 Jail.
As the owner of the 4 Jail, I need to keep an eye out for any player, including myself, harvesting blue beans. If any of these harvests result in a payment of at least one thaler, I get a bonus. I can take one thaler from the discard stack as my bonus for having the 4 Jail.
At the end of the game, if I own the 4 Jail, I also get a bonus when blue beans are harvested. If this harvest leads to a payment of at least one thaler, I can take one thaler from the discard stack as my bonus.
Game End
In games with three or four players, the game ends when the draw deck is completely used up for the third time. For games with five players, the game ends when the draw deck is completely used up for the fourth time.
Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for you. Now, you can buy even more buildings in the game. Isn’t that awesome? Let me tell you how it works.
So, it all starts with the player who was taking their turn when the game ended. From there, it goes clockwise, giving each player a chance to buy buildings. Everyone gets in on the action!
Now, let’s get to the good part – scoring! Once everyone’s had their turn, it’s time to count up the thalers and see who came out on top.
First, each player counts the thalers in their earnings stack. That includes thalers from buildings like the 3 or 4 saloon. Every little bit counts!
But wait, there’s more! Players also get to add the Indian tipi thalers and the prices they paid for all their buildings. So, make sure to keep track of those expenses!
Now, here’s where things get really exciting. If a player owns four or more buildings, they earn bonus thalers. And the more buildings they have, the bigger the bonus!
- If a player has 4 buildings, they earn 1 bonus thaler.
- For 5 buildings, it’s 2 bonus thalers!
- Keep going – 6 buildings earn you 3 bonus thalers.
- Wow, things are really looking up with 7 buildings, as you earn 5 bonus thalers!
- And if you’re a pro with 8 buildings, get ready to celebrate because you’ll earn a whopping 8 bonus thalers!
Alright, folks, it’s time for the big reveal. The player with the most thalers is the ultimate winner! So, sharpen those counting skills and give it your all. Good luck!
For example: I have 6 thalers in my earnings stack. I own the following buildings: the 2 Saloon, the 2 Blacksmith, the 4 Jail, the 3 Goldmine, the 4 Indian tipi, and the 4 Farm.
All six of my buildings have a combined value of 19 thalers. My 4 Indian tipi earns me an extra thaler for each thaler in my earnings stack, so I get 1 additional thaler.
Since I have six buildings, I earn 3 bonus thalers for them. Therefore, my total score for the game is 6 + 19 + 1 + 3 = 29 thalers.
Cognac Variant

Let’s dive into the world of Bohnanza and explore the Cognac beans and their unique Distilleries.
In the game, we have a total of nine types of beans and nine types of buildings. Each one plays a special role in our Bohnanza adventure.
The rules for High Bohn remain the same, with one exception: the Distillery building cards have some special attributes!
Discover the Cognac Bean Distillery

If you buy the 2 Distillery, you have to use it right away.
When you gather beans from a bean stew field, you have to give one thaler to the owner of the 3 Distillery.
You get to choose which thaler to give when you harvest bean stew.
At the end of the game, when you harvest a bean stew field, you have to give one thaler to the owner of the 3 Distillery. The thalers collected go under the 3 Distillery.
If you buy the 2 Distillery, you have to use it right after purchasing. When you harvest a distillery field, the beans you collect are added to your earnings stack (before applying the Indian tipi).
The owner of the 4 Distillery uses the beanometer on the 4 Distillery card instead of the cognac beans when harvesting them.
