How to play Grand Austria Hotel solo Game Rules

My Experience with Grand Austria Hotel Solo Rules

Grand Austria Hotel is an exceptional game that I enjoy playing on my own. It offers a unique and immersive experience, allowing me to take on the role of a hotel owner and manager. The solo rules of the game add an extra layer of challenge and excitement.

What I find particularly interesting about the solo variant of Grand Austria Hotel is the way it replicates the unpredictability of running a real hotel. The game introduces a deck of event cards that simulate various situations that can occur during the gameplay. These events can have both positive and negative effects, creating an element of surprise and making each playthrough different.

Managing my hotel involves making strategic decisions throughout the game. I have to allocate my resources wisely, such as hiring staff, improving different areas of the hotel, and attracting prestigious guests. The solo rules maintain this strategic aspect by including an AI opponent that competes against me. This opponent makes its own choices, ensuring that I need to stay focused and consider my moves carefully.

While the solo variant of Grand Austria Hotel is challenging, it also provides a sense of accomplishment. Successfully growing and managing my hotel feels rewarding, especially when I overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. The game keeps me engaged and entertained, offering a satisfying experience that I can enjoy on my own.

If you’re looking for an immersive and strategic board game to play solo, Grand Austria Hotel is a fantastic choice. The solo rules add depth and excitement to the gameplay, while the unpredictable events keep me on my toes. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or new to the world of board games, Grand Austria Hotel offers an enjoyable and fulfilling experience that you won’t want to miss.

In this mode, you can challenge yourself against an AI opponent called the Automa. While you play by the regular game rules, the Automa follows simplified rules, so you don’t have to spend too much time on its turns. You don’t need to strategize for the Automa, allowing you to focus on your own game.

What You’ll Need

To play, you’ll need the standard game and the Automa deck, which consists of 20 cards.

Getting Set Up

Note: If you plan to play in Easy mode, you can skip the rules mentioned in this box.

Start by removing all assistants with final game effects from the staff deck. Shuffle these cards and draw the first five. Don’t look at them. Place these five cards in a separate deck near the Automa’s hotel.

Next, place the remaining staff cards back into the main staff deck and shuffle it.

Shuffle the Automa deck and place it near the Automa’s hotel.

Hey there! Let me walk you through setting up a game for two players with a little twist:

  • The Automa won’t have the 4 cubes;
  • The Automa won’t use the money marker;
  • The Automa won’t open the first three rooms;
  • The Automa won’t take the initial guest.

We’ll randomly decide who goes first.

Difficulty Levels

For this variant, you have three difficulty options:

  • EASY: Disregard the icons on the Automa cards that are in square brackets. You can ignore all assistant icons during the game.
  • NORMAL: Ignore the icons on the Automa cards that are in square brackets.
  • HARD: The effects of all icons shown on the Automa cards should be applied.

Automa Overview

  • The Automa doesn’t need any money to get new guests or open new rooms.

When you play with the Automa, some unique rules apply. First, the Automa fulfills all guest requests instantly, without having to manage the cubes. Additionally, it doesn’t need to open a new room before placing a guest inside. The Automa never passes a turn and doesn’t earn any victory points for completing the blue regions of its hotel. The Emperor’s bonus or malus doesn’t affect the Automa.

To use the Automa cards, each card displays the actions taken by the Automa. At the start of each Automa’s turn, draw two cards and follow the instructions depicted by the icons on the cards. Make sure to draw a card at the beginning of each turn.

Once I finish the automa deck, I need to reshuffle it.

When it comes to the guest color taken by Automa, the first icon will show you the chosen color. If there is a tie, I will look at the tabletop and follow the hand icon’s order to choose the guest with the most victory points.

Now, let’s talk about the die taken by Automa. The second icon will indicate which die I choose. If there are two dice shown, I will take the one from the area with the highest number of dice. If there is a tie, I will consult the hand icon for further instructions.

Notes:

  • DMAX means that I will take a die from the area with the most dice;
  • DMIN means that I will take a die from the area with the least dice among all others;

When you see a grey guest icon, it means that the Automa will choose the guest that gives the most victory points, no matter what color they are. If there are no guests or dice that match what’s on the Automa card, discard the card and draw a new one. If the Automa’s hotel doesn’t have any free spaces for the guest’s color that the Automa would take, discard the current card and draw a new one.

After the Automa gets a guest, they earn the victory points associated with that guest, if there are any, and then they place the guest in the hotel by using a closed room tile that matches the guest’s color. Any additional benefits shown on the guest card are ignored.

Now, let’s talk about how to place the closed room tiles.

When it’s my turn, I won’t pay anything to put down a room tile. I also don’t have to follow the rule about where the rooms can be placed. I can start wherever I want, not just in the bottom left corner.

If I get a BLUE / RED / YELLOW guest, I’ll put down a closed room tile and try to fill up the rows of my hotel from the bottom to the top and from left to right. But if I get a GREEN guest, I’ll put down a closed room tile and try to fill up the columns of my hotel from the bottom to the top and from right to left.

If I put a tile on a room that has a victory points symbol, I’ll get those points right away, just like you would if you were playing.

Here’s an example: If the Automa takes these guests in the order: 1-yellow, 2-blue, 3-yellow, 4-green, 5-red, 6-green, the hotel will be set as shown in the picture.

The second half of the automa card provides the following information:

How many Emperor points the Automa gains.
If the Automa fulfills an award..
If the Automa hires an assistant..

When it doesn’t matter which round it is, if the automa card shows an assistant, I’ll draw an assistant card from the common staff deck and give it to the Automa. But if the automa card shows an assistant with an end game effect, I’ll draw a staff card from the Automa’s private staff deck.

Emperor Phase

During the Emperor phase, I’ll gain victory points just like a normal player, based on the position of my marker. The Emperor’s benefits and punishments won’t affect the Automa’s game.

Final Scoring

The Automa’s final score is determined by the points I’ve gained during the game, the points provided by the room tiles, and any assistants I have with end game effects, if I have any.
