Hey there! Did you know that you can play Founders of Gloomhaven solo? Yep, you can! Just follow these extra rules.
Getting Set Up
To start, choose a race and set up the game like you normally would. Make sure to gather all the components listed on page 3, except for the voting tiles and the “Income” action card, which are used in a two-player game but not in solo play.
Keep in mind that some races have actions that can make the game easier for you:
- Easy: Orchid, Quatryl

- Medium: Savvas, Harrower, Aesther

- Hard: Human, Vermling

- Very Hard: Valrath, Inox

When you play a game by yourself, you get to control all the resources. That means you don’t have to choose which resources to use. But there are still some things you need to do to get the game ready. First, you need to set everything up. Then, you have to put your race’s resource on a grey space with a number. Where you put it can make the game easier or harder for you:

- Normal: Choose the left section (thematic map) or any location of the symmetric map
- Hard: Go for the right section (thematic)
- Very Hard: Opt for the middle section (thematic)
Additionally, put two temporary influences below the middle building card (h) in the proposal offer and place two permanent influences below the right building card (i).

Game On
Get ready for an exciting game that will keep you on your toes! We’re going to play seven rounds, each one giving you the chance to strategize and make important decisions. The six rounds in the middle will end with a vote on the best building offer. And remember, by the end of the seventh round, you must have delivered all the resources for your prestige buildings. If you don’t, we’ll all lose the game. No pressure!
Taking Action
When it’s your turn, you have two options. You can play a card face up to use its special action, or you can play a card face down for a basic action. Since it’s just you playing, there are no follow-up actions after your main action. It’s all up to you.
If you decide to play a regular action card face up, you’ll discard it like usual. But here’s the twist: if you play an adviser action card face up, it’s removed from the game completely. Don’t worry though, you can still use an adviser action card for a basic action by playing it face down.
Voting Time
Once I’ve played all the cards in my hand, it’s time for the “Call to Vote” card to take the stage. But before we get into that, let’s talk about how this game works.
First things first, I need to gather up my income as soon as I play the “Call to Vote” card. That’s always a good way to start, right? Oh, and don’t forget to decide which fancy building from the proposal offer you want to put on the board. Choices, choices…
Now, the left card is a bit of a freebie – you can place it on the board without paying any influence. But things get a little trickier with the other two cards. You’ll need to cough up some influence to put those babies down. Just remember, two fleeting influences is worth one lasting influence. Not too complicated, right?
Let’s talk numbers. At the beginning, it’ll cost you two fleeting influences to play the middle card. As for the right card, well, it’s a bit steeper. You’ll need two lasting influences, which is equivalent to four fleeting influences. That’s where things start. But brace yourself, because every time a prestige building gets all its resources delivered, some more influence needs to be paid.
I always get to decide where I want to place a building, as long as I follow the usual rules. The leftover building cards in the offer don’t go to waste either. Instead, they are shifted to the left, and a new card is added to the right space. If I have any fleeting influence left after each Call to Vote, it is lost, just like normal.
Making Progress with Buildings
When I place a prestige building tile on the board, a neutral claim token is immediately placed on it. This happens before any resources are delivered. At the same time, neutral claim tokens are also placed on all the prestige building tiles that still need resources.
When a prestige building receives a resource, the neutral claim token is taken away. During a Call to Vote, any remaining neutral claim tokens must be removed by paying the influence cost indicated on the right card in the proposal offer for each token.
If you can’t afford to pay this cost, you lose the game. To succeed, you should aim to deliver at least one resource to each unfinished prestige building during each cycle.
The End of the Game
When the seventh cycle of card play is completed, the “Call to Vote” card is not used. If any prestige building still lacks all its resources, the game is lost.
Otherwise, the game is finished, and scoring takes place as usual. Your final score can serve as a gauge of your performance.
