How Scenes Work

Making Choices

Most of the scenes and all the chapters in the game will prompt you to make a choice. When you make these choices, you are not allowed to discuss or debate with others about what to choose. Your choice should be based on what you already know and trust your instincts.

There are two types of choices in the game: partner chooses and both choose.

Partner Chooses

When it’s time to choose who will play the scene, it’s actually the partner who gets to decide. And not only do they get to make the choice, but they also receive the personality tokens that come with it.

Both of You Make a Choice

Both players have to make a decision at the same time, but in secret. You can choose between options A, B, C, or D. To show your choice, use a choice token. Put the token face down in the choice circle on the board, and then you both reveal your choices at the same time.

How to Resolve a Scene

When it’s time to resolve a scene, you need to follow these steps:

Let’s talk about personality tokens: When you make choices, you can earn personality tokens. You’ll see little icons that show your different aspects (like ❤️ or ��). Place these tokens on the board to show where you’ve earned them.

In a scene where someone is choosing a partner, only the person doing the choosing will get personality tokens.

Making Changes: Certain situations will require you to make changes, usually to one of your traits. When you make a change, you’ll either have to randomly discard one of your traits, features, or occupations (depending on what needs to be changed), or you’ll get to choose one to discard, depending on the scene.

First, take the card you discarded and put it face down under the correct deck. Then, draw 3 new cards of the same type and choose one to keep. The remaining cards should be placed back under the deck.

When you make a change to a characteristic or a job, it will affect your personality tokens. You will remove the token that corresponds to the card you discarded, and replace it with a new one for the new card.

Tell: When a card asks you to tell something, you need to come up with a creative story to complete the task.

Reveal: If a card tells you to reveal something, you should show it to the person playing with you, and then hide it again. If the card asks you to reveal a secret, it will activate the secret’s reveal effect and the secret will go into the play area.

Discard: To discard a card, place it face down (unless told otherwise) in the discard pile next to the deck.

Other effects: There may be additional effects on certain cards. These effects will always be explained on the cards themselves.

Types of Scenes

Did you know that besides the option to choose and have your partner choose, there are a few other types of scenes in Fog of Love?

Situation

On your turn, you can play a situation. These situations are placed in the play area, just like most other scenes. However, unlike other scenes, they usually don’t come with any choices. Instead, they have an impact on the next scene that is played, often influencing the effects of that particular card. You can play two or more situations consecutively, but only the most recent one will have an effect.

When you play a card in the game, you may notice a small icon in the lower right corner. This icon represents a carry-over effect that will come into play later on. It’s like a little reminder, letting you know that something will happen in a future scene.

This icon is used specifically for carry-over effects, not for any other situations. So whenever you see it, you’ll know that there’s something important to consider in the next scene.

It’s important to note that a carry-over effect will never impact a chapter or the finale. If you play a card with a carry-over effect right before a chapter ends, it will affect the next regular scene in the new chapter. It won’t have any effect on the chapter itself or the final outcome of the game.

Keeping Secrets

Now let’s talk about secrets. When you play a secret card, you place it face down in front of you, under the edge of the game board. This keeps it hidden from other players until a future scene reveals it or until the game is over.

If I happen to reveal a secret, I need to read out the card and do whatever it says. Oh, and I also need to give the player the personality tokens that are shown at the top of the card, if there are any.

But if the secret doesn’t get revealed during the game, that’s okay. I’ll just wait until the end and then reveal it. And once I do, I’ll take care of any effects that say ‘if not revealed’. The player will still get the personality tokens, just like before.

While a secret is still a secret and hasn’t been revealed, it doesn’t count towards how long the chapter is. But as soon as it gets revealed, it becomes part of the chapter and counts towards the length.

Oh, and by the way, playing a secret ends my turn. So keep that in mind.

When it comes to a minor scene, it works a little differently.

When it comes to counting the length of a chapter in the game, it’s important to note that minor scenes don’t count. You can identify minor scenes by the symbol in the lower right corner. Instead of placing them in the play area, you put them in the discard pile next to the sweet deck after playing them. They still end your turn.

At the start of your turn, you have the option to discard any number of minor scenes face up and immediately draw new scenes to replace them. The new scenes can only be drawn from the deck(s) specified by the current chapter. If you get new minor scenes, you can keep discarding and drawing new cards as well.

Reveal the Mystery

If the other player has played a secret, you can reveal and resolve it. This action is called “Reveal Secret” and it is a minor scene.

React

When it comes to playing reactions in my game, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First, reactions can only be played as a response to other scenes that were just played. You can’t play a reaction in response to a chapter or a finale card.

Each reaction is unique and has its own set of rules. Some reactions allow you to skip the scene that was just played, while others give you the power to change the choice made by your partner.

Reactions are played out of turn order, which means they don’t count as a player’s turn. After playing a reaction, you get to immediately draw a new scene. Keep in mind that reactions are considered minor scenes.

Special Effect

When you play this game, you’ll always have at least two destinies in your hand after getting rid of some. And don’t worry about any extra discards!

Both you and your partner will begin the game with the same destinies in hand. Figuring out which destinies they kept or threw away is an important part of the game. It helps you understand where they might be headed in your relationship.

By the end of the game, at the grand finale, you’ll need to choose just one final destiny. This is the destiny you’ll aim to achieve in the story.

Your final destiny will also determine if you stay together or break up. Remember, not every Love Story has destinies that allow you to break up.

At first, all the destinies you have are considered to be “in hand” (unless you’re told otherwise in the synopsis). As you play the game, certain effects can cause you to move destinies from your hand to your personal discard pile, and vice versa.

How Effects Affect Destinies

Swap In: If the destiny mentioned is in your personal discard pile, you can add it back to your hand from the discard pile. In exchange, you must discard another destiny from your hand.

Swap Out: If the mentioned destiny is currently in your hand, you must discard it and choose a different destiny from your personal discard pile to add to your hand.

Discard: When you discard a destiny, it goes into your personal discard pile. This only happens if the destiny is currently in your hand. Keep in mind that you can only discard a destiny if you still have at least two destinies in your hand after discarding.

Get back: Take a destiny card from your own discard pile. Don’t worry if you already have that specific destiny in your hand.

If you don’t have any destinies in your discard pile, you won’t be able to switch or replace them.

Disregard any effects that mention destinies that aren’t part of the Love Story you’re playing.

Game Over

When I reach the end of the game, it’s the most exciting moment. I get to choose my final destiny and earn additional points based on my secrets and my trait goals.

Just follow the instructions on the finale card. Each Love Story may have slight variations.

In the Love Story “I Know What I Want,” there are a few moments that involve specific genders. These scenes revolve around the topic of having children. However, if you prefer, you have the option to disregard these gender dependencies entirely.

Right from the start, you have the freedom to integrate the special scene seamlessly into the main story deck (instead of placing it separately as a synopsis). This allows for the possibility of having a child, even if you are playing as a couple of two men. Two women can also have a child since one of them can become pregnant. Just like in real life, this can happen without engaging in sexual activity in Fog of Love.

Prior to organizing the remaining scenes, feel free to remove any linked scenes that don’t align with your envisioned story. By doing so, the narrative will instead revolve around adoption rather than the notion of becoming pregnant (which all the linked scenes are centered around) in order to have a child. The choices are limited only by your imagination.
