Flashlights & Fireflies Game Rules
Hello there! I want to share with you the amazing game of Flashlights & Fireflies. It’s an exciting game that is easy to learn and will bring hours of fun for you and your friends. So, let’s dive right into the rules!
To start the game, you’ll need a group of players, a playing area, and a deck of Firefly Cards. Ideally, you should play in an area with some trees and bushes, as it adds to the excitement.
Once you’re ready, the game begins! One player takes on the role of the Firefly Master, while the other players become Fireflies. The Firefly Master’s job is to catch as many Fireflies as possible, while the Fireflies try to avoid being caught.
To play, the Firefly Master holds the deck of Firefly Cards, facing away from the other players. The Fireflies then scatter across the playing area, hiding among the trees and bushes. The Firefly Master counts to a predetermined number, giving the Fireflies time to find their hiding spots.
When the counting is done, the Firefly Master faces the deck towards the Fireflies and shines a flashlight on the cards. This creates an enchanting display of fireflies on the cards, mimicking an actual firefly-filled night.
The Fireflies must freeze whenever the flashlight is shining. They can only move when the flashlight is turned away. The Firefly Master uses the flashlight to search for the Fireflies. When a Firefly is found, the Firefly Master calls out their name and that Firefly must come forward.
If a Firefly is caught, they join the Firefly Master and assist in catching the remaining Fireflies. The game continues until all the Fireflies are caught or the time runs out.
Now, here’s a twist! Fireflies have a secret power. Once per game, a Firefly can play a Glow Card, which allows them to freeze the Firefly Master for a short period. This gives the Fireflies a chance to escape and find new hiding spots.
To win the game, the Fireflies must avoid being caught until the time runs out. If at least one Firefly remains free, the Fireflies win! If all the Fireflies are caught, the Firefly Master wins.
So, gather your friends, find a dark and magical playing area, and get ready to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Flashlights & Fireflies. Have fun and may the glow be with you!

Okay, here’s what you do. You start by hiding your player in the woods. Just find a good spot where no one can see you.
Next, you need to catch fireflies. These little bugs have unique magical powers that can help you. When you catch them, they will fill up your special flashlight.
Once you have enough fireflies in your flashlight, it’s time to use it. Shine your flashlight around while you’re seeking other players. If the light shines on someone, they are frozen and can’t move. But be careful, because if they catch you looking, you’ll be frozen too!
But here’s the fun part. Whenever someone is frozen, all the other players can sneak closer to home. The closer they get, the more exciting it becomes!
The game ends when someone reaches home. That’s when the winning happens! The first player to make it back home is the Champion of the game.
Setting up the game

- First, place the game board and wooden die right in the middle of where we’re playing.
- Next, take a look at all the tiles with pictures of players on them. We need to remove all six of those. Then, flip the rest of the tiles over so we can’t see the pictures and mix them up. Finally, scatter them around the “woods” area on the left side of the board.
- Now, it’s time for the Firefly tokens. Flip them all over so they’re face down, mix them up, and scatter them around the “firefly field” on the right side of the board.
- Each player gets to pick a Player tile, a matching pawn, and a Flashlight card. If there are any sets that aren’t being used, put them back in the box. Put your pawn in a stand and place it on the “Start” space on the board. Keep your Player tile and Flashlight card face up right in front of you.
How to Play the Game
Hey there! Are you ready to learn how to play Flashlights & Fireflies? Let’s dive in!
This game is a lot of fun and is played over a number of rounds. To start the first round, the person who last played a game of tag gets things going. From there, the play continues in a clockwise direction. Each round has four phases: Hide, Catch, Shine, and Sneak.
Phase 1: Hide
During the Hide phase, you’ll use Woods tiles to hide your player. There are two types of Woods tiles you can draw: Trees, which are the most common, and some sneaky Pests.
Here’s how it works:
- In the first round, all players draw three Woods tiles from the Woods pile.
- In later rounds, things get a little trickier. If you were frozen (we’ll explain more about that later), you’ll get to draw two extra Woods tiles in a game with 2-3 players, or one extra tile in a game with 4-5 players. But if you weren’t frozen, you won’t draw any additional tiles.
Got it? Great! Now you’re ready to move on to the next phase. Let’s keep the fun going!
So here’s what you do: grab all your Woods tiles, including any you had before, and add the new ones. Mix ’em up and keep ’em face down in front of you. Gotta keep those other players guessing, right? Oh, and don’t worry, you can always take a peek at your own tiles whenever you want. It’s your little secret.
Now, let’s get you all set up as the starting player:

2. Grasp
I have a question for you: Do you know that feeling when you’re reading something and suddenly a word jumps out at you and catches your attention? It’s like your brain is saying, “Hey, look at this word! It’s important!”.
Well, that’s the power of a catch word. It’s a special kind of word that stands out from the rest and grabs your focus. You might be wondering why this matters, and the truth is, catch words can have a big impact on how we interpret and understand what we’re reading.
When you come across a catch word, your brain naturally latches onto it and gives it extra weight and significance. It’s like a shortcut to understanding the meaning and purpose of the text. Catch words can help guide our thinking, highlight important ideas, and organize our thoughts.
But, it’s important to note that catch words can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can elevate the overall impact of the text and generate a stronger response from the reader. On the other hand, they can also be overused or misused, leading to confusion or a lack of clarity.
So, how can you effectively use catch words in your own writing? It all comes down to understanding your audience and the purpose of your text. What are you trying to convey? What emotions or thoughts do you want to evoke in your reader? By taking these factors into account, you can choose the right catch words that will resonate with your audience and enhance the overall impact of your writing.
And if you like the idea of catch words, then you’ll love the concept of catch phrases. These are short, memorable phrases that encapsulate the essence of a larger message. They’re like little nuggets of wisdom that stick with you long after you’ve finished reading.
With these factors in mind, you’re ready to embark on a journey of catch words and phrases. In today’s fast-paced world of information overload, it’s crucial to grab your reader’s attention and make your message stand out. So, remember to choose your catch words wisely and use them strategically to create a lasting impact on your audience.
In conclusion, catch words are a powerful tool in the art of communication. They have the ability to grab our attention, guide our thinking, and elevate the overall impact of our writing. By understanding their importance and using them effectively, we can create meaningful connections with our readers and deliver our message with clarity and resonance.

I’m so excited! We’re gonna catch some fireflies! It’s super fun and easy. Here’s how we play:
First, we all sit in a circle. Then, we take turns rolling the special Firefly die. It has numbers on it. The number we roll tells us how many Firefly tokens we get to draw and show everyone.

If you see a Firefly token with at least one firefly, you should put it on your Flashlight card. Remember, you can only have up to three Firefly tokens on your flashlight. If you end up with more than three, simply decide which ones to get rid of.

Oh no! If you see a mosquito token, that means you just caught a pesky mosquito. Don’t worry, though. Just put the token back face down on the field, and that counts as a draw for your turn. Phew!
3. Shine
Get ready to power up your flashlight to freeze the other players! Here’s how it works: starting with the player who rolled the die, take turns placing your Firefly tokens face up in front of other players and try to find them. You can decide to place all, some, or none of your fireflies on any player who hasn’t been found yet. But here’s the catch: you have to make that decision before revealing any tiles. You can also choose to save some fireflies on your flashlight for the next turn.
Once you’ve placed your fireflies, it’s time to turn over the Woods tiles. For each firefly on the token you placed in front of a player, turn over one Woods tile. For example, if a token has two fireflies, you can reveal two tiles. Let’s see what happens when you reveal:

Player: Congratulations, you’ve discovered the key player in the game! And, guess what? They’re frozen for this round! Don’t worry though, because if you have fireflies in front of the other players, you can keep going with your turn.

Hidden Trees Hey there! You’re still trying to find me! Just say, “Keep searching!” if you haven’t found me yet!

Oh no, there’s a pest! It could be a bat, raccoon, or opossum, sneaking around in the darkness of night. It startles me, and my turn ends right away. Any Firefly tokens that I had placed in front of other players go back to the firefly field.
If I don’t have any Fireflies left in my flashlight, I can’t even try to find anything this round. I have to skip the Seek action.
Here’s a little note for you: If I had placed Fireflies in front of multiple players, I have to choose just one to search for first.
Sneaking Around
Now it’s time for the exciting part – Sneak! Let’s see what happens next.
- If you’re not frozen, move your pawn one step closer to home!
- If you are frozen, you won’t move. However, in the next round during the Hide phase, you’ll get a bonus of two Woods tiles or one tile if you’re playing with four to five players.
Starting a New Round
Put all the used Firefly tokens back in the firefly field, making sure they are face down, and mix them up. If no one has reached home, you begin a new round by following the same four steps again – Hide, Catch, Shine, and Sneak.
End of the Game
The game ends when one player reaches home! If two or more players reach home at the same time, the player with the most face-down tiles remaining is the winner.
