Imagine being trapped in the enchanting and mysterious realm of the Fae, haunted by enigmatic spirits. It is here that the courageous druids of the Baruitha clan come together to perform sacred rituals, paying homage to these mystical beings. The survival of our clan may very well depend on our ability to appease these creatures.

In the captivating game of Fae, you and a few brave companions take on the roles of wayward spirits within this extraordinary realm. As we navigate through its depths, we must keep our true identities hidden from one another. Through clever manipulation and cunning, we seek to guide and entice the lost druids, leading them deeper into these strange lands.

As our spirits successfully bring groups of druids together, these awe-inspiring individuals perform powerful rituals that earn us valuable points. When the game reaches its conclusion, we finally reveal our hidden identities to each other. The player who has amassed the most points throughout our mystical journey shall be crowned the victor.

The Game Components

  • 1 Game Board
  • 60 Druids (5 Colors, 12 of each)
  • 5 Scoring Markers
  • 12 Ritual Cards
  • 5 Spirit Cards

Game Elements

Spaces and Regions

The game board is split into 60 spaces and 12 regions. Each space represents a different type of terrain, as indicated by its illustration and color. Five spaces grouped together make up a region, which is distinguished from other regions by bodies of water, like rivers and lakes.

When playing the game, I move druids around on the board, trying to separate them into different areas to earn points.

Mysterious Identities

When you start playing, you will be given a spirit card that matches one of the druid and scoring marker colors. However, your color will remain a secret until the end of the game.

During the game, scoring is done secretly by color. Whenever points are scored, any player can move the scoring markers around, but you won’t know who actually benefitted from those points, except for yourself, of course.

All five colors are included in every game, but some colors won’t be assigned to any player. These colors, known as “neutral colors,” can still earn points.

As the game progresses, you can carefully observe what the other players do on their turns to try and figure out which color they have. This knowledge can give you an advantage.

Setting Up

  1. First, put the game board in the center of the table. Grab all the scoring markers and place them on the starting space of the scoring track. You’ll find the scoring track in the top-left corner of the board.

Let’s dive into the magical world of druids! I’ll show you how to set up the game board. It’s a simple process, but it’s important to get it right. Follow along with me!

To start, we need to randomly place all 60 druids on the board. Each space on the board should have only one druid in it. Remember, we want to create a balanced game, so we need to make sure that each region has exactly one druid of each color in its five spaces.

Now, when I say color, I don’t mean the color of the terrain. Druid colors are not tied to terrain type. Instead, we have five different colors for our druids: red, blue, green, yellow, and purple. So, in each region, we need to have one druid of each color.

It may sound a bit tricky, but don’t worry, I’m here to guide you through it. Just remember to place the druids randomly, making sure each space has only one druid, and each region has exactly one druid of each color in its five spaces. Happy gaming!

Ready to dive into the mystical world of spirits? Let’s get started! First, we need to shuffle the five spirit cards and deal one to each player. It’s important that you keep your card secret and don’t show it to anyone. Your card will reveal your influence color and spirit.

Let’s start by organizing the ritual cards based on their value. Take each card and create piles, placing them next to the board in ascending order from “1” to “5”.

Playing the Game

When playing Fae, your objective is to move your druids across the board and position them next to other druids. When there are empty spaces surrounding one or more druids, a ritual is triggered, potentially earning you points for specific colors.

Your Turn

In this game, turns are taken in a clockwise manner, starting with the oldest player at the table. When it’s your turn, you get to choose a space on the board that contains one or more of your druids. Then, you move all of those druids to an adjacent space where there are other druids present.

Moving Your Druids

When it comes to moving druids, there are some important rules to remember:

  • You have to move all of the druids out of the space you choose.
  • The space you move the druids out of and the space you move them into can have any combination of druid colors, including your own or not.
  • You can’t move druids into an empty space.
  • If a space has seven or more druids, you can’t move the druids out of that space. However, you can still move other druids into it if you want.
  • You can move druids across rivers, but not across lakes.

After you move the druids, if a space that had one or more druids becomes isolated (meaning all the spaces around it have no other druids), a ritual happens.

Let me explain something interesting to you – there’s a cool thing you can do in this game. You know those spaces with druids? Well, it’s possible for a single move to isolate multiple spaces with druids. And when that happens, you can resolve all rituals one at a time, in any order you want.

Let’s Talk About Rituals

When you perform a ritual by isolating one or more druids and starting a ritual, you’ll take the top card from the left pile of ritual cards. These special cards represent the ever-changing magic in our realm and are marked with two types of terrain.

The top part of each card shows blessed terrain, which adds points to the ritual’s score. The value displayed on the card tells you how many points are added. The bottom part of the card shows cursed terrain, which is a way that the ritual can be disrupted.

Before scoring the ritual, we need to resolve any disruptions that may have occurred.

Disruption

A disruption during the ritual causes the druids in the ritual space to disappear, reducing the number of points you’ll earn from the ritual.

There are two ways in which a disruption can occur:

When a ritual takes place on cursed ground, I need to bring back all the druids on that spot to the box. No colors will earn points in this scenario.

So, here’s the deal – if you’ve got all five colors, you wanna send any of those lone druids back to the box. Easy enough, right?

Let’s Talk Scoring

After you’ve dealt with all the chaos (and moved those druids), it’s time to check how much your ritual is worth. Every druid left in the ritual area is worth one point, no matter what color they are. But wait, there’s more! If you managed to perform the ritual on blessed terrain, you’ll rack up some extra points as shown on the card.

Once you’ve figured out the final value of your ritual, move each scoring marker that matches the druid colors in the ritual by that value. And here’s the kicker – all those colors score the same amount, regardless of how many druids of each color were there.

When I finish a ritual, even if it got interrupted, I keep the ritual card face down in front of me. It’s important to remember this because at the end of the game, each ritual card I have is worth one point.

It’s interesting to note that the final ritual card, with a value of “5”, has no cursed terrain. Instead, all types of terrain are blessed for that final ritual.

When the Game Ends

There are two ways the game can come to an end:

  • All the rituals, including the 12th and final card, have been resolved.
  • A player can no longer make any moves with their druid.

Once the game ends, it’s time to reveal our spirit cards.

Next, we each count how many ritual cards we have and score one point in our own color for each card.

Finally, it’s time to compare scores. The player with the most points wins!
