Object of the Game

In EVO, you play a nomadic people in symbiosis with a primitive reptilian species. You travel the wild open spaces of Kumtagh with your mounts, and you’ll use your knowledge of biology to help them adapt and succeed against both the harsh and changing climate and other competing species.

In this game, you’ll earn mutation points (MP for short) as you play.

When you play this game, the person who has the highest score at the end is declared the winner. But what happens if there’s a tie? Well, in that case, the person with the most dinosaurs wins. And if there’s still a tie after that, then it’s a draw. Isn’t that exciting?

Getting Started

To get started, set up the game board. Each board is designed for a specific number of players, and you can easily see the number of players indicated on each board. Just make sure to pay attention because the boards are double-sided!

When we start playing the game, each of us will gather our playing pieces. I’ll take my clan marker, 8 dinosaurs, and 1 dinosaur board. You’ll do the same with your pieces. And we both start with 6 MP.

Before we begin, let’s set up the biology lab and the climate wheel near the game board. The climate wheel needs to be set up exactly as shown on the opposite side. And we should shuffle the 15 event cards and create a deck with them.

All the normal gene tokens, which is a total of 36, go into a bag. We also need to randomly add 8 unique gene tokens from the stock of 12.

#image.jpg

These are the Normal Gene Tokens

Next, we create the climate token pile. But before that, we need to remove the meteorite token, which will determine the end of the game. We discard one climate token at random without looking at it.

Let’s start by creating a pile of climate tokens. Take the meteorite token and two other random tokens, shuffle them together, and place them face down. Next, shuffle the remaining climate tokens and add them to the pile, also face down.

By following these steps, you will end up with a pile of 12 climate tokens, with the meteorite token hidden somewhere among the bottom three.

In order to begin the game, we need to establish the turn order. To do this, we will mix up the clan markers of all the players and place them on the designated spots in the biology lab. This will determine the starting order for the game.

The player who is on the left side of the initiative track will be the one to take the first turn. They will have the privilege of starting the game.

Lastly, each player will put a dinosaur token on the two starting areas that are closest to them (or randomly if they prefer). The rest of the dinosaur tokens will be placed near the players, keeping them within reach for future use.

I want to tell you all about the dinosaur boards in this game. Each player gets their own board that shows the characteristics of the different dinosaurs. It’s pretty cool!

Let me break it down for you. Here’s what you’ll see on the board:

  • #image.jpgAt the top of the board, there’s a special area for alchemical vials. These vials have some neat effects that we’ll talk about later.
  • #image.jpg

Legs

When it comes to the different dinosaur species, we start with 2 movement points. And if a dinosaur has extra pairs of legs, they get additional movement points. It’s like having multiple feet to help them move around!

But what about horns?

Hey there! Did you know that all dinosaurs begin their lives horn-less? Yup, that’s right! Horns are actually used by dinosaurs for fighting, and they can be acquired as the game progresses. Pretty cool, huh?

Keeping Cool with Thermoregulation

All dinosaurs can develop thermoregulation layers that help them survive in hot areas on the island. At the start of the game, dinosaurs don’t have any layers, but they can acquire them as they play.

Fur Layers

Did you know that all the dinosaurs in the game can grow fur to help them survive in cold areas on the island? It’s true! At the start of the game, the dinosaurs don’t have any fur, but they can acquire it as they play.

How Do They Get Fur?

Every dinosaur begins its life from a single egg, symbolizing its birth. As I play the game, I have the power to increase the birth rate.

  • At the bottom right corner, there’s a special area where I store unique genes. These genes have incredible effects, and I’ll tell you more about them soon.
  • How to Play the Game

When you play the game EVO, you’ll go through a certain number of rounds, usually between 9 and 11. Each round consists of six phases that have to be resolved in a specific order. Let’s take a look at each phase:

    Phase 1: Climate Phase

During this phase, the starting player will flip over the top climate token and apply its effect. If the token shows a meteorite, then the game ends immediately and the player with the most MP tokens wins. But if it’s not a meteorite, the starting player will adjust the climate by turning the climate wheel according to the direction shown on the token.

    Phase 2: Mutations Phase

In this phase, players have the opportunity to evolve their species by using their MP tokens. They can spend their MP to gain new physical or behavioral traits that will help them survive in the changing environment.

    Phase 3: Initiative Phase

During the Initiative Phase, players place their species on different islands, each with its own unique climate conditions. The player with the most MP tokens gets to choose their starting position first and so on, until all species are placed.

    Phase 4: Movement Phase

Once all the species are placed, it’s time for them to move around the islands. Players can spend their MP tokens to move their species to different islands, allowing them to access new resources or find safer habitats.

    Phase 5: Birth Phase

In the Birth Phase, players have the chance to create new offspring. They can spend their MP tokens to lay eggs or give birth to new members of their species, increasing their population and chances of survival.

    Phase 6: Survival Phase

Finally, in the Survival Phase, players evaluate the survival of their species. They take into account the climate conditions, the traits their species possess, and any other factors that might affect their chances of survival. The player with the strongest and most well-adapted species will have a higher chance of surviving and thriving in the game.

Remember, each round consists of these six phases, and you’ll have to strategize and make smart decisions to ensure the success of your species in the ever-changing world of EVO. Good luck!

If you want a fun and challenging game that lets you evolve and adapt like real animals, then you’ll love EVO. With its unique gameplay and strategic depth, it’s the perfect game for those looking for a thrilling and immersive experience. So gather your friends, choose the right traits, and take on the challenge of EVO!

How to Play Evo: Official Rules

Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey to rule the prehistoric world? Evo is a thrilling board game where players compete to create and evolve their own dinosaurs. But before you dive in, it’s crucial to understand the mechanics of the game. Let me guide you through the rules.

    Objective

In Evo, the goal is to strategically adapt your dinosaurs to different climates and survive the changing environment. As the climate wheel turns, your choices will determine the fate of your dinosaur species. The player with the strongest and most successful dinosaurs at the end of the game wins.

    Start of the Game

At the beginning of each round, the climate wheel is moved based on the section selected from the deck. This determines the climate for the current round. Depending on the selected section, the climate can either favor or hinder the survival of your dinosaurs. It’s important to consider the implications of each climate and plan your actions accordingly.

    Mutation Phase

When I start playing, I pick gene tokens one by one from the bag and place them in the biology lab. Each player gets their own line, so we need as many filled lines as there are players. But on the first line, there’s no space for a gene, so I always end up with one less gene than the number of players.

We can’t have two identical genes in the same mutation phase. If that happens, I have to put the extra gene back in the bag and draw a new one to replace it.

After that, it’s time to bid for the genes in initiative track order. I use my MP (which are also victory points) to pay for the genes I want. I have to be smart about how I spend them!

When it’s my turn to bid, I put my clan marker on the token I want (or on the first column if I haven’t chosen a specific gene yet).

If the column is empty, you can put your marker wherever you want (but remember, the number you choose represents the MP the gene will cost).

If the column already has a marker, you have to put your marker on a higher number than the one that’s already there. This means you have to bid more.

If someone outbids you, you have to take your marker off and make a new bid. Your new bid has to be on a different column. But if you get outbid again later, you can bid again on the original column.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you bid 6 on a column, nobody can outbid you. This means you will always win that gene.

The person who wins the bidding for the first column gets an event card.

Everyone else takes the gene from the column they won.

When playing the game, each player needs to give the bank the right amount of MP to cover their bids. This is important to remember: if you want something, you gotta pay for it!

Let’s talk about normal genes now. These genes have a lasting impact on the game. Once you use them, their effects are here to stay.

Take a look at this image to better understand how to play the game and the role of normal genes:

[![How to Play Evo Official Rules](/images/how-to-play-evo-official-rules-UltraFoodMess_8.jpg)](https://www.UltraFoodMess.com/evo/how-to-play.php)

Now, let’s move on to our next topic: pair of legs.

When you have more legs, you can move more! Just think, each extra pair of legs gives you an extra movement point. So if you have two pairs of legs, you’ll start with two movement points. But if you have three pairs of legs, you’ll start with three movement points!

    Horn

Have you ever wondered how horns can make such a big difference in a fight? It turns out that each horn is like a secret weapon for dinosaurs, helping them both in attack and defense. But here’s the catch – dinosaurs start the game without any horns!

Special Layers for Controlling Body Temperature

Did you know that dinosaurs had different layers in their bodies to help them survive in hot weather? It’s pretty fascinating, but let me break it down for you.

    Fur Layers

First up, we have the fur layers. Just like how we humans wear clothes to keep warm or protect ourselves from the sun, dinosaurs had a similar concept. These fur layers acted as insulation, helping to regulate their body temperature and protect them from the scorching heat outside.

    Feather Layers

In addition to fur layers, some dinosaurs had feather layers. Feathers weren’t just for flying birds – they also served as another way for dinosaurs to stay cool. These feather layers provided shade from the sun and helped the dinosaurs regulate their body temperature. Imagine having your own built-in umbrella! How cool is that?

    Skin Layers

The final layer I want to tell you about is the skin layers. Dinosaurs had unique skin adaptations that helped them survive in hot climates. They had thick, scaly skin that acted as a protective shield against the sun’s harmful rays. This kept them from getting sunburned and helped them stay hydrated by preventing too much water loss through their skin.

So, each layer had its own purpose – fur layers for insulation, feather layers for shade, and skin layers for protection. These adaptations allowed the dinosaurs to thrive in hot environments and adapt to their surroundings. It’s incredible how nature finds ways to help organisms survive, isn’t it?

Have you ever wondered how dinosaurs were able to survive in a cold climate? It turns out they had a clever secret – layers! Each species of dinosaur starts without any fur layers, but as they grow and adapt to their environment, they develop different layers to keep themselves warm and protected.

    The First Layer: Eggs

It all begins with eggs. Just like birds, dinosaurs laid eggs to reproduce. These eggs provided the first layer of protection for the growing dinosaur inside. The thick, sturdy shell acted as a barrier against the cold and helped to keep the embryo safe and warm until it was ready to hatch.

    The Second Layer: Feathers

As a dinosaur hatched from its egg and started to grow, it developed a second layer – feathers! These feathers were not just for flying, but also for insulation. Just like a cozy blanket, the feathers trapped air close to the dinosaur’s body, creating a layer of warmth.

    The Third Layer: Scales

But feathers weren’t the only protection dinosaurs had. As they continued to evolve, they developed another layer – scales. These scales acted like a shield, protecting the dinosaur from cold temperatures and even predators. The scales were made of tough, overlapping plates that kept the heat in and the cold out.

    The Final Layer: Fat

The last layer that dinosaurs developed to survive in a cold climate was fat. Just like our own bodies, dinosaurs stored fat to keep themselves warm. This layer of insulation helped to regulate their body temperature and provided them with extra energy during the long, cold winters.

So, next time you imagine a dinosaur, remember that they were not just big, scaly creatures. They were also smart and adaptable, using layers to stay warm and thrive in even the coldest climates. Nature truly is amazing!

When a round begins, each dinosaur species has the opportunity to lay a new egg. At the start of the game, each species already has one egg.

    Special Potion

    Distinctive Traits

The special genes have long-lasting effects on the dinosaurs.

      #image.jpg

    Sturdy Armor

Imagine this gene as a powerful defense mechanism for your dinosaurs. It’s like having two sturdy horns that protect them whenever they’re under attack. Sounds pretty cool, right?

    But wait, there’s more!

Let me introduce you to the large horn. It’s like the big brother of the gene, providing an even greater level of protection. With the large horn gene, your dinosaurs are equipped with an extra layer of defense, making them tough as nails.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – how can I get my hands on this incredible gene? Well, it’s simple. Just make sure you choose the right dinosaurs with this gene when building your team.

Remember, this gene is like a secret weapon. It gives your dinosaurs an edge in battle, making them a force to be reckoned with. So, if you’re looking to elevate your dinosaur game, look no further than the large horn gene.

So, what are you waiting for? Give your dinosaurs the protection they deserve and unleash their full potential with the large horn gene. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

You know what? This gene is pretty cool. It’s like having two horns on your dinosaur when it attacks another one. How awesome is that?

Let’s talk about Thick Shell now.

When dinosaurs are born, you can put them in a spot nearby, up to 3 spaces away.

    Flippers

If you have a dinosaur in your possession, you can make it travel from one coastal area to another by using 1 movement point. A space is considered coastal if it is adjacent to the sea.

Here’s an image that illustrates this concept:

    #image.jpg

Now let’s talk about the wings.

When it’s my turn to move, I can use this special ability called “Move 2.” It allows one of my dinosaurs to move two spaces instead of the usual one. I just have to spend one movement point to use it. I can use this ability in the Movement phase of the game, but only once. Pretty handy, right?

    Regeneration

Hey there! I’ve got something cool to tell you about dinosaurs. You gotta have at least 3 dinosaurs, no exceptions. If you only have 3, you’re safe from attacks and the wild climate won’t bother you anymore. Pretty neat, huh?

Now, let me introduce you to “Killer Babies.” It’s a special move where you can add new dinosaurs to spaces that are already occupied. Here’s how it works: for each new dinosaur you add, roll a die. If you roll the dinosaur symbol, the opponent’s dinosaur gets knocked out! But be careful, if you roll the skull symbol, your dinosaur bites the dust.

Lastly, I want to tell you about “Sixth Sense.” It’s like having a superpower! With this ability, you can see the future and predict what other players will do. It’s a game changer for sure!

So there you have it, all the fascinating things you can do with dinosaurs in this game. Get ready for an adventure like no other!

Whenever you feel inclined, feel free to check out the upcoming climate token.

    Me, the Cave Dweller:

When one of my dinosaurs manages to survive in a dangerous area during the Survival phase, it’s quite an achievement. I’ve always had a soft spot for my prehistoric creatures, and seeing them overcome the odds fills me with a rush of excitement. It’s like they tap into some primal instinct that allows them to push past their limits and come out victorious.

    A Surge of Energy

During the initiative phase, I have the freedom to select my desired position on the initiative track. It’s really up to me where I want to be!

    Bulging Quadriceps

This gene gives you an extra 2 movement points. Pretty cool, right? You’ll be able to zip around the board faster than ever before!

    Chameleon Skin

    Event Cards

Each round, if you were the lucky winner of the bid on the first column of the biology lab, you get to draw a random event card. These cards are super special because they’ll help you in the game. But shh, keep them a secret until you’re ready to play them. You can use more than one in a round or phase, as long as you follow the rules for when to play them.

Now, here’s something important to know about event cards – they don’t last forever. Once you’ve used them, they’re gone. But hey, at least you got to enjoy their effects for a little while!

    Initiative Phase

Okay, so here’s what happens in the beginning. We take all the little clan markers and put them on the initiative track at the top of the column they were in at the end of the last phase. Then, we sort them from lowest to highest based on how many dinosaurs each player has on the board. If there’s a tie, we keep the same order. This way, the players with fewer dinosaurs get to go first.

    Movement Phase

Now it’s time to start moving those dinosaurs! Starting with the first player and going in the order on the initiative track, each player gets to move their dinosaurs. At the beginning, each species of dinosaur has 2 movement points.

If a dinosaur has some extra legs, they get an extra movement point for each pair of legs. Cool, right? But here’s the catch: the total number of movement points has to be divided among all the dinosaurs of that species. So if you have three dinosaurs of the same species, and you have 6 movement points, each dinosaur can only move 2 spaces.

Here’s an example: If a species has 3 movement points, you can either move 3 dinosaurs one space each, or one dinosaur can move 2 spaces and another dinosaur can move 1 space.

Dinosaurs can’t move through or stop on a space that’s already occupied by another dinosaur, whether it’s a friend or not. You don’t have to use up all the movement points available.

The only way to enter a space that has an enemy dinosaur is to start a fight. Here’s how it works:

The player who’s moving spends a movement point and chooses which space to attack. Then, they roll the combat die. There are two possible outcomes:

If the attacking dinosaur wins, it takes the place of the defeated dinosaur and the loser is removed from the game.

If the attacking dinosaur loses, both dinosaurs stay where they are.

Attacking a dinosaur more than once is entirely feasible, even with the same assailant. Just remember, engaging in combat always uses up 1 movement point.

    #image.jpg

    #image.jpg

So, let’s say you’re in a dinosaur battle. It’s you against a ferocious beast, and you need to know if your attack will succeed. Here’s the deal: if the dinosaur you’re attacking has at least as many horns as you do, then you’re in luck – your attack will succeed! But hey, if neither of you have any horns, you still have a shot at winning. Your attack will still land. Pretty cool, right? So remember, when you’re facing off against a dinosaur with horns, count how many horns you have, and if you’re on equal footing or have more, go ahead and attack with confidence!

Imagine this: You’re in a fierce dinosaur battle. I know, pretty cool, right? But here’s the thing – the outcome of the battle depends on the number of horns. If the attacking dinosaur has more horns than the defender, then boom! The attack succeeds.

    #image.jpg

Let me tell you something interesting about dinosaur battles. If a dinosaur with horns attacks another dinosaur, it will succeed if it has at least two more horns than the defending dinosaur.

Remember: A group of dinosaurs with only two members cannot be attacked.

    The Birth Phase

Here’s how it works: each player puts a new dinosaur next to one of their existing dinosaurs. After all players have done this, the ones with two eggs get to do it again. Then the players with three eggs, and so on.

If a player already has all 8 dinosaurs on the board, they can choose to remove one in order to bring a new dinosaur onto the board from a different spot.

    The Survival Phase

This is where things get tough. Each player, starting with the first player and going in turn order, gets rid of dinosaurs that weren’t able to survive the harsh conditions of the island. Here’s how it goes:

As we start the game, each of us takes turns and can add new dinosaurs. Here’s how it works:

    – If the terrain is ideal, all the dinosaurs survive.

    – If the terrain is deadly, all the dinosaurs die.

    – If the terrain is hot, you can choose one dinosaur to survive for each thermoregulation layer on your board. But the rest will die.

    – If the terrain is cold, you can choose one dinosaur to survive for each fur layer on your board. But the rest will die.

Remember, you get to decide which dead dinosaurs to remove, as long as you end up with only two left on the board.

After that, you receive one MP for each dinosaur you have on the board. And then we move on to the next round.
