Hey there! Welcome to the 11th expansion of Dominion, called Dominion: Nocturne. This expansion is packed with 500 cards, including 33 new Kingdom cards.
One of the exciting features of Dominion: Nocturne is the Night cards. These special cards are played after the Buy phase, adding a whole new layer of strategy to the game.
In addition to the Night cards, Dominion: Nocturne introduces Heirlooms. These replace your starting Coppers and provide new opportunities for building your deck.
But that’s not all! You’ll also encounter Fate and Doom cards in Dominion: Nocturne. These powerful cards can give you Boons, which are beneficial effects, or Hexes, which are negative effects. Can you navigate the shifting Destiny and come out on top?
And let’s not forget about the extra cards! Dominion: Nocturne features a variety of extra cards that can be provided by other cards in the game. These cards add even more depth and versatility to your Dominion experience.
Now, it’s important to note that Dominion: Nocturne cannot be played by itself. You’ll need the Basic cards and rulebook from the base Dominion game in order to play with this expansion. But don’t worry, if you already have other Dominion expansions, you can mix and match them all together for even more epic gameplay!
So, if you’re ready to dive into the world of Dominion: Nocturne, gather your cards and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
What’s included?
When you get the Nocturne expansion pack, you will find the following components:
- 332 Kingdom cards
- 33 Randomizer cards
- 42 Heirloom cards
- 12 Boons and 12 Hexes
- 1 Plastic organizer tray and 1 organizing inlay
- 1 Rule booklet
Getting Set Up
Before you play your first game with Nocturne, you need to do a bit of preparation. Open up the box and remove the five sets of cards from their packaging. Once you have done that, put all the cards in the included plastic organizer tray. There is an organizing inlay that suggests a way to arrange the cards, so you can follow that if you like.
Keep in mind that Nocturne comes with 33 randomizer cards, which means there is one for each Kingdom card in the set. Additionally, players will need to have the Treasure cards, Victory cards, Curse cards, and Trash mat/card from either the Dominion or Base Cards (or older editions of Intrigue) sets.
When you play Dominion, like in the past, you have to pick 10 sets of Kingdom cards. If you want to choose sets randomly, just mix the randomizer cards from this expansion with the ones from any other Dominion games you’re playing with.

If any Kingdom cards are marked with a yellow banner as an Heirloom, you’ll begin the game with that Heirloom instead of a Copper. For instance, if Pixie and Tracker are in play, you’ll start with 3 Estates, 5 Coppers, a Goat, and a Pouch. Any unused Coppers will join the Copper pile.
If any Kingdom cards are of the Fate type, shuffle the Boons and place them near the Supply. Also, put the Will-o’-Wisp pile near the Supply. If any Kingdom cards are of the Doom type, shuffle the Hexes and put them near the Supply. Additionally, place Deluded/Envious and Miserable/Twice Miserable near the Supply.
If you’ve included the Druid card, deal three Boon cards face up for use with it. If you have the Necromancer card, discard the three Zombies. Lastly, if you’re playing with the Fool card, find the Lost in the Woods card and keep it within reach.
When you’re using the Vampire card, you’ll want to keep the Bat pile close to the Supply. If you have the Leprechaun or Secret Cave cards, place the Wish pile near the Supply. And if you’re playing with the Devil’s Workshop or Tormentor cards, keep the Imp pile close by. If you have the Cemetery card, make sure the Ghost pile is near the Supply. And if you’re using the Exorcist card, you’ll need to have all three Spirit piles – Will-o’-Wisp, Imp, and Ghost – near the Supply.
Rules of the Game
Hey there! Let me explain the cool new features of Nocturne, which includes Night cards and the Night Phase. These Night cards really shake things up! They come into play after the Buy phase, following the order of Action, Buy, Night, and Clean-up.
During the Night phase, you have the freedom to play as many Night cards as you want. Get ready to dive into the exciting world of Night cards!
Oh, and don’t forget about the special “Heirloom” cards in Nocturne. These cards have a yellow banner and a specific name. In games that include Heirloom cards, every player gets to replace a starting Copper card with the named Heirloom card. It’s a fun twist to the game! Make sure to check out the Setup for more details.

Fate Cards and Boons
Hey there! Let’s talk about Fate cards and Boons in Nocturne. Fate cards are pretty cool because they can give you Boons. When we say “Fate,” it just means that the Boons are shuffled before the game begins. Now, Boons are like a secret deck of cards that get revealed when you need them.
When you “receive a Boon,” it just means you have to flip over the top Boon card and do what it says. If the Boons deck is empty, don’t worry! Just scoop up all the discarded Boons, shuffle them, and voila! You’ve got yourself a fresh new deck. You can even do this whenever all the Boons end up in the discard pile.
Normally, the Boons go back to the discard pile after you’ve used them. But there are three special ones, called The Field’s Gift, The Forest’s Gift, and The River’s Gift, that stay in front of you until the next Clean-up time. How cool is that?

Doom Cards and Hexes

Hey there! Let’s talk about Nocturne and its Doom cards and Hexes. These cards are pretty interesting because they can mess with the game in different ways. The Doom cards are special because they can give players Hexes. When you start the game, the Hexes get shuffled up and become a face-down deck of cards.
Now, here’s the deal with Hexes. When you “receive a Hex,” it means you turn over the top card from the Hex deck and do what it says. Simple, right? But when it says “each other player receives the next Hex,” things get a little tricky. You just turn over one card from the Hex deck, and all the other players have to follow the instructions on that same card.
If you run out of Hexes, no worries! Just shuffle the discarded ones to make a new deck. You do this whenever the deck is empty. And remember, any Hexes you receive always go to the discard pile for Hexes.
Here’s something cool: if you have three Hexes and one Kingdom card, you get a State. This State card goes in front of you and applies a special rule. It’s a little extra something to spice up the game.
When it comes to certain cards in the game, there are a few effects that have a lasting impact. Take Deluded and Envious, for example. They only last for one turn and then they are returned. On the other hand, Miserable and Twice Miserable affect scoring at the end of the game. Lost in the Woods, however, is a bit different. It affects one player’s turns until another player takes it.
Now, let’s talk about how these effects work. Deluded and Envious are actually on the same card, so when you play it, you keep the relevant side face-up. The same goes for Miserable and Twice Miserable. They are both on one card, and you keep the relevant side face-up. It’s also important to note that a State only applies to you while you still have it.
Now, here’s something interesting. Boons, Hexes, and States are not like the cards in your deck. They may be physical cards, but they don’t count as “cards” in the game. So, you won’t find them in your deck, and they don’t count as “cards in play” either. When you receive a Boon or a Hex, or when you take a State, it’s not the same as gaining a card. They have their own unique effects.
Let’s talk about Duration Cards

In Dominion: Seaside, Nocturne introduced Duration cards, which are orange in color and possess abilities that influence future turns. Unlike other cards, Duration cards are not discarded during the Clean-up phase if they are still active. Instead, they remain in play until the final turn in which they have an effect.
Furthermore, when a Duration card is played multiple times by a card like Throne Room, it remains in play until the Duration card itself is finally discarded. This serves as a way to keep track of the fact that the Duration card was played more than once.
To keep track of whether or not a Duration card was played on the current turn, you can organize your cards into two lines: one for older cards and another for the cards played during the current turn.
