When an ability states “when you gain this,” it activates immediately after you acquire the card. At that point, the card will already be in your discard pile (or wherever it was placed), and you can resolve the ability.

Once you play a card, its “when you gain/buy” abilities no longer have any effect.

There may be times when you buy a card without gaining it, like when you use Trader to get Silver instead. It’s also possible to acquire cards when it’s not your turn.
