  • Finally, you’ll have 1 First Player card.

Object of the Game

Hey there! When we start playing Deus, we each get a hand of 5 Building cards. On your turn, you have two options: either construct a building or make an offering to a god. Choose wisely!

When you’re building something, you start by playing a Building card and putting a wooden piece on the gameboard. The building card should go in the same-colored column, and the cards in that column give you special abilities, starting from the bottom.

These special abilities can help you earn victory points, resources, or money. They can also let you make scientific discoveries or attack your opponents. If you build a temple, you’ll earn victory points at the end of the game.

If you want to get help from a god, you can make an offering. This means you have to discard some cards and then you can draw new ones until you have five cards in your hand again.

There are two ways the game can end:

1. When all the barbarian villages have been attacked.

2. When all the temples have been built.

The goal of the game is to have the most victory points (VP) when it’s over. Each card in the game represents a building. There are six types of buildings, and you can easily recognize them by their color and symbol. Each type of building also has a corresponding wooden piece in the player’s color (except Temples). It’s worth noting that we’ll refer to all the wooden pieces, including ships and meeples, as “buildings” for simplicity.

Continent Tiles, Regions, and Resources

The Continent tiles are the foundation of the game. They make up the gameboard and play a crucial role in your strategy. Each tile contains a diverse mix of land and sea regions, as well as barbarian villages. Let’s explore the different regions and the resources they produce:

In the world around us, different natural environments produce different resources. Fields, for example, are places where wheat is grown. Forests, on the other hand, provide us with wood. Swamps have a unique role too, as they produce clay. And when it comes to mountains, they gift us with the precious resource of stone.

Let’s Get Started!

1. First, we need to set up the gameboard. To do this, we’ll use the continent tiles. The number of tiles and where they go will change depending on how many people are playing.

Hey there! Let’s talk about how to set up your game tiles in a way that’s both strategic and fun. Here’s what you need to do:

1. First things first, you have the freedom to arrange your tiles however you want. Get creative! Just keep in mind that it’s important not to have two barbarian villages next to each other. So spread them out!

2. Now, let’s focus on those barbarian villages. Go ahead and place victory points (VP) on each one. But here’s the trick – the number of VP you place on a village depends on how many regions are adjacent to it. So, take a moment to see how many regions surround each village, and use that number to determine the VP.

By following these steps, you’ll be able to set up your game tiles strategically, ensuring a challenging and exciting experience. Have fun strategizing!

Okay, let’s get started! Here’s what you need to do:

Step 3: Put together a general supply with the following items:

  • Gather as many Temple pieces as there are Continent tiles. (You’ll need 4 pieces for 2 players, 6 pieces for 3 players, and 7 pieces for 4 players).
  • Get 5 resources of each type – wheat, stone, clay, and wood – per player. (If you’re playing with 2 players, you’ll need 10 resources of each type. With 3 players, it’s 15 resources each. And with 4 players, you’ll need 20 resources of each type).
  • Include the victory points (VP).
  • Don’t forget the gold pieces!

Note: If you have any leftover Temple pieces or Resource tokens at the end of the game, put them back in the box. Once a resource runs out during the game, you can no longer collect more of it. However, VP and gold pieces are unlimited. Keep your VP hidden from the other players.

Step 4: Now each player gets their own player board and the Building pieces in their chosen color. Take 2 pieces of each type and place them in the corresponding column on your player board. The remaining pieces form your personal supply, so keep them beside your player board.

Alright, here’s what you need to know to get started with the game. Let’s dive in!

First things first, everyone gets their fair share of starting resources. Each player receives 5 gold coins, and we also distribute 4 resources from the general supply, which consist of 1 stone, 1 clay, 1 wheat, and 1 wood. And to top it off, each player also gets 5 VP.

Once the resources are handed out, it’s time to shuffle the 96 Building cards. Deal 5 of these cards to each player, and then create a draw pile with the remaining cards.

Now that we have everything set up, we need to determine the first player. This lucky individual will be given the First Player card.

Game Play

The game consists of multiple rounds, with the number of rounds varying each time you play. The rounds follow a clockwise order, starting with the First Player. So pay close attention, because your turn will come sooner or later!

When it’s your turn, you have two possible actions to choose from:

  1. Construct a building
  2. Make an offering to the gods

Option A: Construct A Building

If you decide to construct a building, you’ll need to play a Building card from your hand. It’s important to note that there are two types of buildings: standard and temples.

Standard Buildings

If you want to build a standard building like civil, scientific, maritime, military, or production buildings, here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, make sure you have a wooden piece that matches the type of building you want to construct. If you don’t have the right piece, you can’t build the building.
  2. Take the building card and place it on top of your player board. Each player board has columns of different colors. Put the card at the top of the column that matches its color, so you can see the effects of all the cards in that column.
  3. Finally, pay the construction cost shown in the upper-left corner of the card. You can pay with resources or gold.

Remember: When paying the construction cost (only in that case), you can replace each resource with 4 Gold, even if you have the resource.

I need you to place your first Building on one of the outer regions of the gameboard. It’s important that the initial regions for each player are separated by at least two empty regions if possible.

For your subsequent Buildings, you can choose to construct them in a region you already control or an empty region next to one you control. If you place a wooden Building in a region you control, remember that each region can only have one type of Building. This means you can’t have two civil buildings in the same region, for example.

Make sure not to build a building in a region that has a barbarian village, even if there are no longer any Victory Points on that village.

You can only construct maritime buildings, represented by ships, in sea regions. Other buildings cannot be built in sea regions.

If you want, you can put a Building in an empty area at the edge of the gameboard for 3 VP. This can be helpful in certain situations, like when you’re blocked.

    Temples:

To build a temple from your hand, follow these steps:

    1. If it’s your first temple, put the card in the notch on the right side of your player board.

    2. To build your second temple, you need one card of each color on your Player Board. To build your third temple, you need two cards of each color on your Player Board, and so on.

When you want to construct a temple in the game, there are a few steps you need to follow. First, you’ll need to pay the construction cost, which is always 1 resource of each type. If you don’t have the required resources, you can use 4 Gold instead. Once you’ve paid the cost, you can move on to the next step.

The next step is to place a wooden temple from the general supply into one of your regions. Make sure not to place it in an empty region. It’s important to note that you can only have one temple in a city, just like with other types of buildings. The temple is considered a standard building for card effects that rely on the number of buildings in a region.

There’s something you should keep in mind when building your temple. If you choose to build it in a region that only has a military building (an army), you won’t be able to move the army until you build another building in that city. So make sure to plan your moves carefully.

Once you’ve placed your temple, you can’t abandon it. It’s a permanent addition to your city and will have an impact on the game.

By following these steps, you’ll be able to successfully construct a temple and benefit from its effects. Good luck!

Hey there! Did you know that there’s something special about the Temple card in the game? Unlike other buildings, you can still play a Temple card even if there are no more temple pieces left. Pretty cool, right? In that case, you just won’t be able to place a wooden temple on the gameboard, but you can still play the card and continue with the game. Keep that in mind and have fun!

Here’s an example to help you understand better:

I built my first temple. I put the card in the slot on the right side of my player board.

I built my second temple because I have one card of each color (one in each column) on my Player Board. I put the card in the second position of the Temple column.

    Attack the Barbarian Village

You can attack a barbarian village after placing a building on the gameboard. The attack happens right away (the round stops until the attack is resolved) when both of these conditions are met:

    • Players are in all the regions next to the village.
    • There is at least one army in those regions.

When this happens, the player with the most armies in regions next to the barbarian village attacks the village.

When I attack a barbarian village and emerge victorious, I claim all the victory points that were placed on it. This means that the region is no longer considered a barbarian village for any card effects that rely on this status.

But what happens when there’s a tie? Well, in that case, the player who has constructed more buildings in those regions comes out on top and takes the victory points. If the tie continues, the tied players will divide the victory points among themselves, rounding down to the nearest whole number.

    Example:

So, here’s what happened. Madeline just went ahead and plopped a maritime building right there in the sea next to the barbarian village.

And guess what? An attack immediately goes down because the necessary conditions have been met.

Now, let me fill you in on what went down with Anna. She snags those sweet 3 victory points that were placed on the Barbarian Village because she’s got the most military units chilling around the place.

Now, listen up: If you find yourself at the end of your turn without a single card in your hand, don’t sweat it. You automatically draw 5 fresh ones. Oh, and when we run out of Building cards in the deck, we just shuffle the discards to get a brand new one.

    B. Time to make an offering to the gods

Okay, so this is how it goes. Making an offering basically means getting rid of some cards so you can summon one of the 6 awesome gods. But don’t worry, you’ll draw fresh cards to make sure you always have 5. Here’s what you need to do:

I’m here to guide you through the steps of playing this game. So, let’s get into it!

First, you have the option to discard some of the cards from your hand. You can choose how many cards to discard, but make sure you get rid of at least one card. Feel free to keep some of your cards if you want.

Next, place the cards face-up in the discard pile. The other players will only see the top card, not the rest. Now comes the interesting part. Each card represents a god, and each god has different powers. Your player board shows what each god can do. The more cards you discard, the more powerful the god’s ability becomes. You can even take wooden pieces from the supply and place them on your player board using the god’s powers.

After all that, it’s time to replenish your hand. Draw cards from the deck until you have 5 cards in your hand again. But here’s a twist! If you invoked Minerva (the yellow/scientific god), you get to draw an extra card for each card you discarded earlier.

That’s it! You’re ready to continue playing the game. Just remember these steps and have fun exploring the different powers of the gods. Enjoy!

Hey there, listen up: You can never have more than 10 cards in your hand, got it? If you somehow manage to draw more cards and end up with more than 10, well, you gotta stop drawing once you hit 10 cards. Fair enough?

Here’s a heads up: If you already have more than 5 cards when you start this step, no worries. You don’t have to get rid of any cards to bring your hand down to 5. You’ll simply have more than 5 cards in your hand, that’s all.

      Neptune (blue/maritime)

Incredible news! When you discard a card, you’ll now earn 2 gold. And that’s not all – you’ll also receive a wooden maritime building to add to your collection. How exciting is that?

Let’s talk about Ceres (green/production). This resource is truly remarkable. It brings you a wealth of benefits, including increased production capabilities. Isn’t that fantastic?

So, imagine this: you’re playing the game, and you decide to discard a card. Bam! Just like magic, 2 gold pieces appear right before your eyes. And as if that’s not enough, a stunning wooden maritime building is placed into your possession. It’s like winning a two-for-one deal!

Ceres (green/production) has a dual impact. It not only boosts your financial resources but also enhances your production abilities. With this powerful resource at your disposal, you’ll be able to accomplish incredible feats.

Imagine the possibilities. You can use that extra gold to purchase more resources or invest in improving your empire. And the maritime building? Well, that allows you to expand your reach across the seas, establishing a strong presence in the maritime domain. It gives you an edge over your rivals, propelling you towards success. It’s truly amazing!

So, are you ready to step up your game and embrace the power of Ceres (green/production)? Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity. Start maximizing your potential by harnessing the immense benefits offered by Ceres (green/production). You won’t be disappointed!

When you discard a card, you get to choose a resource that you don’t normally produce and gain one of that resource. This means that you can gather different types of resources by getting rid of cards you no longer need. It’s like a little bonus for getting rid of something!

Not only that, but you also get to build a wooden production building. This building will allow you to produce even more resources in the future. It’s like investing in your future production capabilities.

But what does Minerva have to do with all of this?

Well, Minerva is the yellow (or scientific) card that gives you these benefits. So if you have Minerva in your hand, you can take advantage of this opportunity. Just discard a card, choose a resource, and gain one of that resource. Plus, you get to build a wooden production building. It’s a pretty great deal!

So remember, when you’re playing this game, don’t forget about the power of discarding cards. It’s not always a bad thing – in fact, it can be quite beneficial!

When you play the Vesta card in Terraforming Mars, something fascinating happens. You receive a wooden scientific building as a reward. You can think of it as a little bonus for your efforts!

But here’s the really cool part: playing the Vesta card also has a special effect during Step 4 of the game. Normally, in Step 4, you can draw one card from the deck. But if you have the Vesta card, you’re allowed to draw one extra card for each card you’ve already discarded.

Welcome to the World of Vesta!

If you discard 1 card, you’ll receive 1 Victory Point (VP). But if you discard more than 1 card, you’ll earn a total of 2 VP. In addition to that, you’ll also gain a wooden civil building.

The Red Planet (Mars) is all about military power

When you discard a card, you can gain one wooden building of your choosing. The best part is, you don’t even have to take a military building!

      Let’s talk about Jupiter (purple/temple)

Hey there, let me tell you about a cool game feature you can use! In this game, we have five gods that you can tap into for some extra power. One of them is Jupiter, who we call the “wild” god. Remember, you can only use one god at a time.

What happens at the end of the game?

So, when the game is coming to a close, here’s what you need to know. First, make sure to use the power of one of the gods. You have the option to choose Jupiter as your wild god or one of the other four gods. It’s totally up to you!

Now, don’t forget, you can only use one god at a time. So, select wisely and tap into their unique abilities to give yourself an edge. As you play, make sure to keep an eye out for the different offerings you can make to each god.

Remember, Jupiter is the wild god, which means he can really shake things up. He has some cool tricks up his sleeve that can help you out. But hey, I’m not going to spoil the surprises for you. You’ll have to discover them for yourself!

Alright, let’s get back to the end of the game. Once you’ve chosen your god and made your offering, things start winding down. It’s time to wrap things up and see who comes out on top.

At this point, you’ll want to take the powers of your chosen god into account. Think about how they can help you in the final moments. Can they give you that extra boost you need to win the game? Well, there’s only one way to find out!

So, go ahead and enjoy the game. Remember, you can only choose one god, so make it count. And don’t forget to see what Jupiter, the wild god, can do for you. Good luck!

      End of the Game

The game comes to an end when one of two conditions is met:

      1. All the temples from the general supply have been built.

      2. All the barbarian villages have been attacked.

Once one of these conditions is met, we finish the current round so that each player has an equal number of turns. After that, we play one final round where each player can choose one last action.

Now it’s time to calculate the victory points (VP) for each player. Add up the following:

      – VP won during the game.

      – Points awarded by the temples constructed (maximum of 12 VP per temple).

      – For each type of resource (wheat, wood, stone, clay) and gold, determine which player has the most. If a player has at least 1 of the resource, they receive 2 VP.

If there’s a tie for the most resources, each tied player gets the 2 VP.
