In the world of board games, there are countless options to choose from. If you’re a fan of strategy and resource management, then you’ll love the game Citrus. It’s a game that challenges your decision-making skills and allows you to create your own thriving plantation.

So, what do you need to get started? Here’s a breakdown:

  • 5 Player mats
  • 1 Plantation market
  • 30 Workers in 5 colors
  • 1 Double-sided game board
  • 5 Money tiles
  • 30 Landscape tiles
  • 90 Plantation tiles
  • 15 Building site tiles
  • 15 Finca (house) tiles
  • 1 Cloth bag (not pictured)
  • Rule book

Note:

The Citrus game board provides two different ways to play. If you’re looking for a shorter game, use the side with fewer spaces (about 30-40 minutes). For a longer game, choose the side with more spaces (about 50-60 minutes).

If you have 2-3 players, you can play either the short or the long version. However, for 4-5 players, it’s recommended to play the long version.

The following instructions are for the long version of the game. If you prefer the short version, the rules will be slightly different, and you can find them under “Variants”.

Welcome to the Game!

Let’s talk about the goal of this game. You and I are trying to build our plantations on the board and earn as many points as possible. How do we get these points? Well, we earn points for each plantation we build and for the landscape tiles we collect.

Here’s the thing, if we have the largest plantation regions that are right next to a Finca when it’s scored, we get even more points. But in order to build plantations, we need money. And that’s why it’s important to harvest some of our plantations every now and then. We need that income to keep building!

Getting Started

Lay out the game board on the table. Put the plantation market on the table too.

Take all the landscape tiles and shuffle them. Then, put one of them face-up on each landscape space on the game board. We don’t need any leftover landscape tiles, so you can remove them from the game.

Hey there! Let’s get this game started, shall we?

The first thing we need to do is shuffle the 15 Finca tiles. Don’t peek now, shuffle them face-down and put them on the designated spot on the plantation market.

Now, draw the top 4 tiles and place them face-up on spaces A, B, C, and D of the game board. What do you see?

Alright, time to mix things up a bit. Take the 90 plantation tiles and put them in a cloth bag. Give it a good shake to mix them all together. Now, close your eyes, reach in, and randomly draw 12 tiles from the bag. Place them on the plantation market in the order of the spaces marked 1 to 12. Keep an eye out for any surprises!

Oh, and there’s something else! Take out the tiles for spaces A, B, C, and D. We won’t be needing them for this particular game. Shuffle the rest of the tiles and put them face-down on the market.

Now, let’s reveal the top 3 building site tiles. Find their matching building sites on the board and place them there. Watch as the landscape starts to come to life!

So, here’s the deal: we’re all gonna play a cool game called “The Island of El Dorado.” It’s super easy to set up. First, each of us picks a color and gets a player mat, 6 workers, and a money marker. Put 5 workers on your player mat and put the 6th worker on the 0 space of the point track on the game board. Oh, and don’t forget to put the money markers on the 6-coin spaces of your player mat. Got it? Great!

Time to Play

Alright, let’s get the party started! The player who can bust out the best Flamenco moves goes first. So, show us your fancy footwork!

Now, pay attention. The game goes clockwise, starting with the first player. When it’s your turn, you have two options:

  • Option 1: You can build. This means you buy plantations from the market and place them on the game board right away. Build and conquer!
  • Option 2: You can harvest. This means you score points for at least one plantation region and collect your hard-earned income. Cha-ching!

When playing this game, you have to take action. You can’t just skip your turn. And here’s the cool part – you can also do special actions using your landscape tiles whenever you want during your turn, in any order.

Let’s start with the action called “Build.” It costs 1 coin for each plantation you want to buy. Just pick a row from the market, the one with the arrows, and buy all the plantations from that row. But here’s the catch – you have to pay 1 coin for each plantation you buy. Move your money marker back that many coins on your player mat’s money track.

Take a look at the image for an example. You can see three possibilities where the player can buy plantations from different rows, as long as they have enough money.

Oh, and there’s more! You can also buy and immediately build. It’s like multitasking in the game.

When playing this game, it’s important to remember that you should always buy all the plantations in a row and build them immediately. Storing plantations for later is not allowed. The process of buying and building is considered a single action. If there are only 3 or fewer plantations left on the market after buying, a new Finca is built and the market is refilled.

Make sure you can build before buying

If you don’t have enough money to pay for all the plantations in a row or if you won’t be able to build them all, you are not allowed to buy that row. It’s important to carefully consider your resources before making a purchase.

However, if you make the mistake of taking a row of plantations from the market and later realize that you can’t afford or build all of them, you must return the tiles you can’t use to the market in the order of the numbers on the market spaces.

When you have to return a tile back to the market, you lose 3 points. Make sure to keep track of this on the scoring track.

Put new plantations next to an Estate

There are two ways to create new plantations on the game board:

  • You can place a plantation adjacent to one of your own regions by matching it with another plantation.
  • You can start a new region of plantations next to a road on a Finca.

Your workers mark your regions

When you start a new plantation region, take your right-most worker and put it on the newly placed plantation. No additional workers are needed when expanding your regions.

Harvested regions become neutral

When a plantation region is harvested, the worker is removed. Without workers, the plantation regions are neutral and don’t belong to anyone.

Rules for building

When constructing plantations, you must follow these rules:

Rocks and construction sites are not allowed

I’m here to talk to you about something really important – rocks and construction sites. You might not think much of them, but they are off limits for a reason. Let me explain why.

I’m sure you’ve seen rocks lying around, tempting you to climb or throw them. But it’s important to remember that rocks can be dangerous. They might look harmless, but they can cause serious injury if they fall or if you slip while climbing on them. That’s why it’s best to steer clear and find safer ways to have fun.

Construction sites are another thing to be cautious of. They might seem interesting or exciting, with all the big machines and building materials, but they are definitely not a playground. Construction sites can be full of hazards like sharp objects, heavy machinery, and deep holes. If you go into a construction site without permission, you risk getting hurt or causing damage.

If you’re tempted to explore these forbidden places, think about the potential dangers and the consequences. It’s always better to find safer alternatives for fun and adventure. Plus, by respecting the rules and staying away from rocks and construction sites, you’re showing maturity and responsibility.

So, next time you come across rocks or construction sites, remember to keep your distance, resist the urge to play on or around them, and find other safe places to have fun. It’s all about keeping yourself safe and making wise choices.

If you want to build a plantation, remember that you can only do so on open spaces or spaces where there are landscape tiles. It’s not allowed to build plantations on spaces that have rocks or building sites for Fincas.

Variety is the spice of life

Every road that leads from a Finca (or a building site) must have a plantation of a different color. Take a look at the image: since there is already a lemon plantation next to the road on the right, you cannot build another lemon plantation next to the upper road.

Remember: This rule doesn’t apply if you’re playing the family version.

Merging with your own or neutral regions

You can’t have two plantation regions of the same color owned by different players right next to each other.

However, there are times when merging is allowed. You can merge plantation regions of the same color if:

  • As a player, you have the ability to create a plantation by combining two regions of the same color that you already own. When you do this, you must immediately return one of your workers to your player mat, specifically to the leftmost available space.
  • If you want to create a plantation that connects one of your regions to a neutral region of the same color, you must ensure that your region is equal to or bigger than the neutral region before the merger. If the neutral region is larger, you are not allowed to merge.

When I’m building plantation tiles, there are different things that can happen. Let me break it down for you:

Taking Landscape Tiles

Landscape Tiles Give You Points and Special Actions

  • If I build a plantation tile on a space that already has a landscape tile, I get to take that tile and place it in front of me.
  • If the tile has wild horses, I’ll put it face-down. At the end of the game, I’ll get bonus points for each horse on the tile.
  • If it’s an action tile, I’ll put it face-up. Action tiles let me do special things during my turn. I can use an action tile as soon as I get it or during the same turn.

The specific actions for each tile will be explained at the end of the game rules.

Scoring a Finca

Scoring When a Finca is Enclosed

If, after I take my turn, I see that all 8 spaces surrounding a Finca are filled with plantations, landscape tiles, or rocks, including the spaces diagonally adjacent, then it’s time to score that Finca.

Now let’s count the plantations. First, we need to figure out who has the most plantations in regions that are adjacent to the Finca, including the diagonally adjacent ones. Each region’s size is determined by the number of plantation tiles in that region.

If I happen to have multiple plantation regions next to the Finca, then I just add up the number of plantations in each of those regions.

Now, let’s move on to the points. The player who has the most plantations will receive the higher value of points indicated on the Finca tile. They get to move their worker forward on the scoring track by that number of spaces.

The player with the second highest number of plantations will receive the lower value of points. Unfortunately, all other players won’t receive any points.

What happens when players are tied

  • If multiple players have the same number of plantations, they all get the maximum number of points for 1st place. No one gets points for 2nd place in this scenario. If multiple players have the second-highest number of plantations, each of them are awarded the full amount of points for 2nd place.
  • When only one player has regions adjacent to a Finca when it is scored, that player receives the points for 1st place.

After scoring, the Finca tile is flipped face-down to denote that it has been scored.

For example: Let’s say Klemens1 has 5 lime plantations, Stfn has 2 lime and 3 orange, Anja has 3 orange, and Ande has 4 lemon and 3 grapefruit. Andrea (with a total of 7 plantation tiles) scores 10 points, and Klemens and Stefan (both with 5 plantations) receive 5 points each.

New Finca and the Replenishment of the Market

Three or Fewer Plantation Tiles

When you collect plantations from the market and there are only three or fewer plantations left, it’s time to construct a brand new Finca.

Take the top tile from the Finca stack and select one of the three building sites on the game board. Then, swap the chosen tile with the new Finca. Remove the building site tile from the game and draw a replacement from the stack. Place the new tile in the corresponding space on the game board, matching its character.

Order of Actions: Finca, Plantations, and Market Refill

  • After you place the Finca tile, construct your newly acquired plantations on the game board, adhering to the building regulations. At this point, you are free to start new regions that connect to the roads of the recently built Finca.
  • After refilling the market by drawing tiles from the cloth bag, place them on the free spaces in the order of the numbers on those spaces until all 12 spots are filled.
  • If there aren’t enough tiles left in the bag, the market won’t be completely filled.

Action: Harvest

Instead of building, you can choose to harvest one or more of your plantation regions, as long as you have at least one on the board. Harvesting plantations earns you points and income.

Scoring Points for Plantations

In the game, scoring points is essential for success. You earn points based on your actions in the game, specifically related to your plantations. Let’s break down how scoring works:

  • Each time you harvest a plantation tile, you receive 1 point. If the plantation has a well, you get 2 points instead.
  • Once you score a region of plantations, you take the worker from that region and place it in the left-most free space on your player mat. The harvested plantations stay on the board, but they don’t belong to any player and are considered neutral. No player can add plantations to a neutral region.

For example, let’s say I have a region of 6 orange plantations, and 2 of them have a well. When I harvest this region, I earn 8 points in total, and my worker returns to my player mat.

More workers mean more income

Hiring additional workers can greatly impact your income in the game. The more workers you have, the more opportunities you have to harvest plantations and score points.

  • Once you have completed your work, it’s time to collect your income. The amount you earn is based on the number of workers you have on your player mat. If you have just one worker, you’ll receive 2 coins. With two workers, you’ll collect 4 coins. Having three workers will earn you 6 coins. If you manage to get four workers, you’ll receive 7 coins, and with five workers, you’ll earn 8 coins.
  • Example: After I’m done harvesting, I have 3 workers on my player mat. I get 6 coins as income.

    The Different Landscape Tiles

    Wild Horses (4×2, 4×3, 4×4)

Imagine a game where you find yourself facing a collection of mystery tiles, each one hiding a wild horse. The challenge is to uncover these tiles and reveal the points they hold.

    The Power of Action Tiles

But here’s where things get interesting. In addition to the wild horse tiles, there are also action tiles in play. These tiles offer unique abilities and can be used strategically to gain an advantage. The best part? You can play them anytime during your turn, giving you ultimate flexibility.

During a single turn, you have the ability to collect and utilize as many action tiles as you like. Once you have used an action, you will lose the tile, except for the bull, which is completely removed from the game. If you find yourself with unused action tiles at the end of the game, each one is worth 1 point towards your final score.

Let’s take a closer look at one of the action tiles: Money (2×2, 2×3).

Hey there! When you see the number of coins displayed, just add them to your money track right away. If doing so would give you more than 12 coins, you’ll have to say goodbye to the extra ones. Time to make some tough choices, huh?

    Your Shopping Cart (4x)

Want to instantly build and own a plantation without spending any money? Well, I’ve got some great news for you! You can choose any plantation available and construct it on the spot, completely free of charge. How amazing is that? This incredible offer is available to you, thanks to the Bull card. With this powerful card, you hold the key to instant growth and prosperity.

    Unleash the Bull!

If you’re playing the game, you’ll come across a special tile called the bull. The bull can be put on any empty space on the board, as long as it’s not on a rock or another landscape tile. It’s pretty versatile! One interesting thing about the bull is that it can trigger a scoring event called a Finca scoring, but only if the fields adjacent to the bull are already occupied. It’s like a signal for something big to happen! Oh, and here’s another cool detail – if a player builds a plantation on the spot where the bull is, the bull can be picked up again and used in a different location. Talk about recycling! Unlike other tiles, the bull is the only one that sticks around after it’s been used. It’s quite the survivor.

    The Bridge’s Role

When it comes to building plantations, you have a couple of options. You can build on a rock space or on a neutral plantation. If you choose to build on a neutral plantation, there are a few rules you need to follow. First, the neutral plantation cannot be part of a larger neutral region. Second, if it is part of a larger region, your plantation must be a different color. Make sure you keep these rules in mind when building your plantations.

    Milestone (2x)

    End of the Game

The game comes to an end once all the plantation tiles have been built.

    All Fincas are scored

All the Fincas that haven’t been encircled are now scored. However, this time, only the player with the most plantations in regions that are adjacent to the Finca, including diagonally, receives points. They receive the smaller number of points, which is what the second-place player would have received during the game.

When it comes to scoring in the game, it’s simple. The player with the most plantations gets the most points, no exceptions. If there’s a tie for first place, those players all get the same number of points.

    Every plantation makes a difference

Once that’s settled, it’s time to harvest. Any plantations that still have workers will earn you points. Don’t underestimate the value of these hardworking farms!

    Counting points for landscape tiles

    • Lastly, let’s talk about landscape tiles. Each player receives points for their wild horses, with each horse worth 1 point. And don’t forget about those unused action tiles – they’re also worth 1 point each. Make sure to keep track of it all on the scoring track!
    • Now, here comes the exciting part – the player whose worker is the farthest along the track is the winner! In the event of a tie, multiple winners are possible. So, your workers better hustle if you want to be on top!
