When it comes to Cheesonomics, you have a variety of flavors to choose from. Each flavor represents a different level of sharpness, which is determined by the age of the cheese and the recommended age of the players. If you’re new to the game, it’s a good idea to start with the mild rules. They’re like a fresh and creamy cheese that’s easy to handle. But as you become more experienced, you can graduate to sharper rules, just like a cheese that has aged and developed a stronger flavor.
Think of Cheesonomics as a delicious journey where you get to savor different levels of sharpness. The mild rules are a great starting point, helping you get familiar with the principles of the game. As you progress, you can sample the sharper rules, adding more complexity and challenge to your gameplay. It’s like taking a bite of a cheese that has aged and developed a deep, rich flavor over time.
With Cheesonomics, you have the freedom to choose the flavor that suits your taste. Whether you prefer a milder experience or crave the sharpness of advanced rules, there’s something for everyone. Just remember, the key is to start slow and gradually work your way up. Don’t be afraid to experiment and discover the nuances of different flavors. Cheesonomics is not just a game, it’s a journey of flavor exploration!

Let’s Set Up Cheesonomics Mild!
First, we need to shuffle the market wedges (the small, thick ones) and the cheese wedges (the large, thin ones) into separate piles. Then, we should sort the curd cash into three different values: ones, fives, and tens. Finally, we need to have someone volunteer to be the Big Cheese, who will act as the banker.
Next, we need to place the serving tray, which is just the lid of the box, where everyone can easily see and reach it. Depending on how many players there are, we may need to remove some cheese wedges from the game. If there are only two players, we remove the top 60 wedges. With three players, we remove the top 40 wedges. With four players, we remove the top 20 wedges. But if there are five players, we don’t remove any wedges.
Now, the Big Cheese gets to draw 15 market wedges. These wedges are then evenly distributed into three market wheels, with each wheel having 5 wedges. Any leftover wedges are taken out of the game.
Finally, the Big Cheese gives each player 5 cheese wedges. Additionally, the Big Cheese randomly places a cheese knife, which can be cheddar, Edam, feta, Gouda, or parmesan, in front of each player.
When it’s my turn to play Cheesonomics, I start by taking back my cheese knife from the serving tray. Then, I have three options for what I can do:
- Churn Cheese & Protect your Product
- Produce Cheese & Draw more Dairy
- Sell Cheese & “Moove” the Market
Churn Cheese & Protect your Product
- I can collect cheese wedges from my opponents. I can ask for a specific color or animal type, like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, cow, sheep, goat, yak, or reindeer. If they have the cheese I’m looking for, they have to give it to me.
If my opponent doesn’t have a wedge that matches the color or type I just churned, I have the right to ask them to show me their hand. This way, I can confirm that they don’t have it and they have to give me any one wedge of my choice. I can keep any wedges I want and give one back to each opponent. This makes sure that everyone still has the same number of wedges.
When I churn for a color or animal type, I need to place my cheese knife on the matching space on the serving tray. This prevents anyone else from churning that same color or animal type until it’s my turn again. On my next turn, I have to remove my cheese knife from the serving tray before taking any action.
It’s important to remember that the churning player gets one cheese wedge from each opponent and gives one cheese wedge back to each opponent. This way, the number of cheese wedges players have remains the same after the churning action.
If I use my cheddar cheese knife to churn ‘blue cheese’, I have to place it on the blue space of the serving tray. This means that no one else can churn ‘blue cheese’ until my knife is moved.
But here’s the twist: even though I can prevent others from churning ‘blue cheese’, they can still churn ‘goat cheese’. And if they do, I might even lose one of my blue goat wedges that I earned earlier. It turns out that goat cheese can be a double-edged sword.
Now, let’s talk about how to play the game and win more cheese!
– First, I need to gather all my cheese wedges of the same color or animal type from my hand. Then, I can arrange them in a face-up cheese wheel in front of me. This way, I can sell these wedges in future turns.
– After I produce cheese, I need to redraw from the cheese deck until I have 5 cheese wedges in my hand again. But if there are no wedges left during or after the redraw, it’s time for the final selling turns and scoring.
See, it’s all about producing cheese and collecting more dairy. By following these steps, I can become a cheese-master in no time. So, are you ready to churn and win?
I’ll let you in on a little secret: when it comes to playing the Cheese Game, there are a few rules you need to follow. Don’t worry, they’re simple, and I’ll explain them to you. First things first, you can only hold up to 5 cheese wedges in your hand. That means no hiding any extras! And when you produce those wedges, stack them together into one wheel. Make sure the colors and types of animals are visible to everyone.
Now let’s talk about selling cheese and “moving” the market. It’s pretty straightforward. You can sell up to 3 wedges of the same color or animal type from your cheese wheel. The market will determine the prices, so you’ll collect the appropriate curd cash.
That’s it! Those are the basic rules of the Cheese Game. Have fun and may the cheesiest player win!

Hey there! Let me break down how the market price for sold wedges works. It’s actually pretty simple! The price is determined by adding up the value of each face-up market wedge of the matching color. But wait, there’s more! If a market wedge has a blue ribbon, it counts as 2 market wedges. Don’t worry about the color of the ribbon itself, it’s not important.
Here’s an example to help you see how it works. Let’s say that Dale sells 3 blue wedges. In the market, there are 3 blue France market wedges. Out of those, 2 have a blue ribbon. So, when we calculate the current price for blue cheese, we add 1+2+2, which gives us 5 curds. To find out how many curds Dale earns from this sale, we just multiply the price (5 curds) by the number of wedges sold (3). That gives us a total of 15 curds. Pretty nice, right?

- I keep my sold cheese wedges in my own stack, facing down, so I can count them at the end of the game.
- If a color of cheese isn’t available in the market, I can’t sell it. But I can still get rid of it during the final scoring.
- I can only sell cheese wedges that I made in the previous rounds. I can’t sell the ones I just made.
2. “Move” the Market after I sell my cheese.
- In a mild game, no new market wedges are added.
- In a mild game, the market changes when wedges are flipped over.
- After I sell my cheese, I have to flip a market wedge that matches one of the colors I sold.
Let me give you an example of how colors work in the game:
Imagine you want to sell 1, 2, or 3 reds. In that case, you must flip 1 red market wedge to the opposite side. It’s a simple action that can have a big impact on your strategy.
Now, let’s talk about types:
If you sell 1, 2, or 3 cows, it’s a bit different. You obviously can’t flip a cow in the market since there are no actual cows there. Instead, you need to choose one of the colors that match the cows you sold and flip that. It’s a clever twist that adds some depth to the game.
The End of the Game
When the cheese wedge draw pile is all used up, the game is nearing its end. But don’t worry, there’s still a chance to make one final Sell Cheese action, without making any changes to the market.
- If the player with the starting player token (the cheese name on the knife is first alphabetically) decides it’s time to end the game, then each player, in turn order, gets to take one final Sell Cheese action at the current market prices, as long as it doesn’t change the market. It’s one last chance to make some strategic moves before the game comes to a close.
The Final Showdown: End Game Scoring
When the end of the game approaches, it’s time to calculate the scores and determine the winner. Here are some important rules you need to know:
- If a player who is not in the starting position initiates the end game scoring, then each player, starting from him and moving towards the starting player, gets one final chance to sell their cheese.
- If the player to the right of the starting player initiates the end game scoring, the game comes to an immediate halt without any further selling actions.
Unleashing End Game Liquidation and Bonuses
After the thrilling race for cheese, the player with the most curd cash will emerge victorious in Cheesonomics. Here’s how it all goes down at the end of the game:
- Each player receives 1 curd for each unsold wedge still remaining on their cheese wheels after the last chance to sell.
- All unsold wedges, along with players’ hands, are removed from the game during end game liquidation. They won’t be used when calculating end-game bonuses.
- End-game bonuses are determined as follows (ties receive equal shares):
If you sell the most cows, sheep, goats, yaks, or reindeer of any color, you’ll get a bonus in curd cash. The bonus is the same as the number of wedges you sold of that type.
For example: Dale sold 5 cows, 3 sheep, and 4 goats. Alana sold 5 cows, 5 sheep, and 2 goats. Dale gets a bonus of 4 curds for selling the most goats, Alana gets 5 curds for selling the most sheep, and Dale and Alana each get 5 curds for selling the most cows.

Tie Breaker
When it comes to breaking ties in Cheesonomics, it’s important to look at who sold the most different colors of cheese. If there is still a tie, then both players share the victory.
Cheesonomics Sharp Rules
All the basic rules of Cheesonomics apply, but with a few extra twists!
Be cautious when selling cheese in Cheesonomics, as there can be sudden shifts in market demand. This is especially true if you’re selling wedges with market symbols such as bells, shears, mountains, plows, or pails!

When you look at the cheese wedges, you’ll notice market symbols beneath the animals. These symbols are important for understanding the game.
Getting Ready
- First, let’s make sure all players have enough market wedges:
- If there are 4 or 5 players, give each player 2 market wedges.
- If there are 3 players, give each player 3 market wedges.
- If there are 2 players, give each player 5 market wedges.
- Keep any remaining market wedges separate. You’ll use them later in the game.
Playing the Game
- After you sell cheese and take the “Moove” the Market action, it’s time to make a choice. You need to pick a wedge from your personal supply of market wedges and replace it with a wedge of the same color that you just sold. This means you’ll be flipping a new wedge and replacing an old one. If you don’t have any of the color you just sold, you can skip this step.
Whenever you trade in one of your market wedges for a new one, make sure to either get a discarded wedge or keep the one you replaced. You should always have the same number of market wedges in your personal supply. Remember, you can’t look at the other side of the wedges you’re replacing, but you can look at and choose from the discarded wedges.
When we play the game, one strategy I like to use is taking an opponent’s market wedge. It adds an element of surprise and can give me an advantage. I have to reveal my market wedge to the player I’m trying to steal from, and they can inspect it. This creates a sense of intrigue and makes the game more exciting. Another rule to keep in mind is that we can’t churn for market symbols. This adds an extra challenge and forces us to think strategically. By following these rules, we can enhance our gameplay and make the experience even more enjoyable.
