The Rules of A Game of Thrones Catan

In the world of A Game of Thrones Catan, the strategic board game based on the popular book series, I am transported to the fictional land of Westeros. This is my opportunity to experience the power struggles and battles for control that the characters in the books face.

Firstly, to set up the game, you will need to gather the game board, the resources, and the development cards. Each player will be assigned a house from the books, such as Stark or Lannister, and given two settlements and two roads to start with. The goal of the game is to accumulate victory points by building settlements, roads, and upgrading to cities.

To acquire the resources needed for construction, players will take turns rolling two dice. Each roll will determine which hexes produce resources, such as wood, brick, sheep, wheat, or ore. Players can then trade these resources with other players or with the bank to obtain the necessary materials for their projects.

It’s important to note that each hex has a corresponding number, and when this number is rolled, the resources become available. This means that certain hexes are more valuable than others, as they have a higher probability of producing resources. This adds an element of luck and strategy to the game, as players must decide where to place their settlements to take advantage of these valuable locations.

In addition to gathering resources, players can also purchase development cards with their resources. These cards can provide special abilities or grant additional victory points, further helping players in their quest for domination. However, the contents of these cards are kept secret until they are played, adding an element of suspense to the game.

As the game progresses, players will encounter various challenges, such as the Robber character, who can sabotage their progress by blocking resource production. Additionally, other players may try to steal resources or hinder their opponents’ plans through cunning tactics.

The game continues until a player reaches the required number of victory points, which varies depending on the number of players. At this point, the game is over, and the player with the most victory points is declared the winner.

Playing A Game of Thrones Catan allows me to immerse myself in the world of Westeros and experience the thrill of strategic decision-making. By utilizing my resources wisely and outwitting my opponents, I can claim victory and become the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

  1. The kingdoms have long forgotten about you, only allowing you to recruit from their slums and prisons. However, you still reign over the ancient land known as the “Gift”. Surrounded by the Stark’s realm to the south and the endless seas to the east and west, the Wall stands tall in the north as a barrier against the wildlings and other terrors of the harsh northern wastelands. Your task is to establish and expand your settlement in the Gift. This is crucial because hungry and poorly equipped men make for ineffective guards.
  2. There are six different types of terrain in this game. Each terrain produces a unique resource, represented by a card. Here’s what each terrain yields:

Here’s the deal: The more times a number is rolled, the more resources the hexes with that number produce. So when you’re choosing where to settle, it’s a smart move to pick hexes that have a high likelihood of rolling good numbers, like 6 and 8, instead of less favorable ones like 2 or 12. But here’s the catch: these popular hexes are also the ones that Tormund the Robber likes to target the most.

Getting Started

Let’s start by organizing the resource cards. Take all the cards and sort them into five different stacks. Keep them face up and place them next to the board. This will form our supply.

Now, we need to set aside the 11 hero cards and the 2 “New Recruits” cards. We won’t be using them in the base game. After that, shuffle all the development cards and place them face down next to the board.

Let’s start by setting up the game board. Take the special cards labeled “LONGEST ROAD” and “LARGEST PATROL” and place them next to the board with the side that says 2 VP facing up. Next, grab the two 6-sided dice and place them beside the board.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Let’s Get Started!

Put away the 12-sided die, gray figures, wall, and guards for now. We won’t need them in the base game.

Now, here’s what you need to do:

  • Pick a color for yourself. Grab all your player pieces in that color, along with a building cost card. Keep them in front of you.
  • Set up 2 settlements and 2 roads in your chosen color, just like the picture on page 1 shows.
  • For every terrain hex next to your starting settlement (the one with a white star on page 1), you get 1 resource. Take the matching resource cards from their stacks and keep them hidden from the other players.

For example: Look at the blue settlement on the right in the picture on page 1. See the star? Blue gets 1 brick, 1 lumber, and 1 ore for that settlement.

Let the Game Begin!

When it’s my turn, I do a series of things in a certain order:

  1. Step 1: I roll a 6-sided dice to produce resources, and this roll applies to everyone playing the game.
  2. Step 2: I can trade resource cards with other players or with the supply.
  3. Step 3: I have the option to build roads, settlements, and/or keeps, as well as buy development cards. If I have a development card, I can play it at any time during my turn.

Once I finish my turn, I pass the dice to the player on my left, who then starts their turn with step 1. The player who is oldest goes first in the game.

Step 1: Producing Resources

At the start of my turn, I roll two 6-sided dice. The total number on the dice determines which terrain hexagons produce resources.

When you have a settlement on a corner that connects to a terrain area with a rolled number, you get one resource card of that type. If you have two or three settlements that connect to the same area, you get one resource card for each settlement. And if you have a keep that connects to the same area, you get two resource cards. But if there aren’t enough resources available for everyone, you can check the Rules Reference for more information.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: When I roll a “6,” I get 2 brick for my 2 settlements, and my opponent, Blue, gets 1 brick for his 1 settlement. If I roll a “4,” Blue gets 1 grain. But if Blue had a keep instead of a settlement, he would get 2 grain.

2. Let’s Trade

Now that the dice roll is done, we can freely trade to get resource cards in two different ways:

A. Trade with Other Players

On my turn, I can trade resource cards with any of you. I’ll tell you what resources I need and what I’m willing to give in return. You can also make your own offers and suggestions.

Note: Remember, we can only trade with the player whose turn it is. So, we can’t trade with each other right now.

B. Trade with the Supply

If you’re playing Catan, you have the option to trade with the other players or trade on your own. When it’s your turn, you can always trade at a rate of 4:1. This means you can trade 4 of your resource cards back to the supply and choose 1 resource card of your choice in return.

But if you have a settlement or keep on a trade route, you can trade with the supply at a more favorable rate. You can trade at a rate of 3:1 or 2:1, depending on the trade route.

Trade with the supply at a rate of 3:1 with a trade route
How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess
Trade with the supply at a rate of 2:1 with a lumber trade route

Hey there! Did you know that you can always make a 4:1 trade, even if you don’t have a settlement or a trade route? It’s pretty handy!

Here’s how to build:

Now it’s time to start building! When you build, you can do a bunch of cool things like earning victory points, expanding your road network, improving your resource production, and even buying development cards that can help you out. But first, you’ll need to pay a specific combination of resource cards (check out the Build Costs Card).

Grab the right number of roads, settlements, and/or keeps from your supply and put them right on the game board. Then, return the resource cards you used back to their stacks.

Just a heads up, you can’t build more pieces than what you have available. So, the most you can have is 5 settlements, 4 keeps, and 15 roads.

Let’s start with roads:

To build a road, you’ll need some brick and lumber. Grab those resources, and you’re good to go!

When I’m building a new road, I need to make sure it connects to one of my existing roads, settlements, or keeps. It’s important to remember that I can only have one road on each path.

Longest Road

Hey there! So, the way you can score the “Longest Road” card is by being the first player to construct an uninterrupted road of at least 5 segments. Pretty cool, right?

But here’s the deal: if someone else comes along and builds an even longer road than yours, they’ll snatch that “Longest Road” card from you, along with its sweet 2 victory points. It’s a total turnaround of 4 victory points! Talk about a game changer!

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let me explain how road building works in the game of settlers. Take a look at the example below:

Road Build Example: I, as the blue player, can build a road on the paths marked in green. However, I cannot build on the path marked in red because one of your settlements blocks my way.

Now, let’s talk about the concept of the “Longest Road” in the game. Here’s an example to help you understand:

Longest Road Example: Let’s say you, as the red player, have a continuous connection of 6 roads (not counting the fork). That means, you have the “Longest Road” title. However, my 7-road linkage is interrupted by one of your settlements. So, my longest road is 5.

B. Settlement Requires: 1 Brick, 1 Wool, 1 Grain, And 1 Lumber

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Okay, listen up! I’ve got an important rule for you to remember when playing this game. It’s called the “Distance Rule.” What this means is that you can only set up a settlement at a spot where three intersections are empty. That’s right, all three of them must be unoccupied, even by your own settlements or keeps. This rule ensures a fair playing field for everyone.

Now, here’s another important thing to keep in mind. Your settlements need to be connected to your own roads. Think of it this way: each settlement is like a little neighborhood, and it needs a road to connect it to the rest of your empire. This way, when a terrain hex produces resources, you get a piece of the action no matter whose turn it is. And here’s the best part — for each settlement you have next to that terrain hex, you’ll score yourself a shiny new resource card. Cha-ching!

Oh, and guess what? Each settlement you build is worth 1 victory point. So, the more settlements you have, the closer you are to winning this game. It’s all about strategizing and making smart moves. Are you up for the challenge?

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Red, you can place a settlement on any of the green intersections. However, you must be careful because you cannot build on the intersections marked in red. This is because you need to follow the distance rule.

When you want to build a city, you’ll need 3 Ore and 2 Grain.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Did you know that in the game, you can establish a keep by upgrading one of your settlements? It’s pretty cool!

Here’s how it works: when you decide to upgrade a settlement to a keep, you take that settlement piece and put it back in your supply. Then, you replace it with a keep piece. It’s like giving your settlement a fancy upgrade!

Once you have a keep, you can start reaping some benefits. A keep allows you to acquire two resource cards for any adjacent terrain hex that produces resources. So, if you have a keep next to a forest hex, you get two resource cards from that forest. It’s a great way to build up your resources!

Oh, and here’s an extra perk: each keep is worth two victory points. So not only do you get more resources, but you also increase your chances of winning the game!

Now, if you want to buy a development card, you need to have three specific resources: ore, wool, and grain. It’s like a little shopping spree in the game! Once you have these resources, you can trade them in for a development card that can give you special abilities and advantages on your journey to victory.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I buy a development card, I get to draw the top card from the deck. It’s always exciting to see what I’ll get!

There are three types of development cards: ranger patrol, progress, and victory point cards. Each of these cards has its own unique effect and can help me in different ways.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let’s talk about development cards. They’re pretty cool because once you use them, they’re gone for good! So you can’t buy any more if there aren’t any left in the supply.

It’s important to keep your development cards hidden in your hand. That way, your opponents won’t know what you’re planning. It’s like a secret weapon!

4. Special Cases

A. Rolling a “7” and Activating Tormund

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you roll a “7”, nobody gets any resources. Instead, if you have more than 7 resource cards, you have to give back half of them (rounded down) to the supply.

Now, it’s time to move Tormund. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. You have to move Tormund right away to a number token on any other terrain hex.
  2. Next, you get to steal 1 resource card at random from 1 opponent who has a settlement or keep next to the chosen terrain hex. The player you’re stealing from puts their resource card hand face down, and you take 1 card randomly. If there are multiple players with settlements or keeps next to the chosen hex, you get to pick which one to steal from.

Important: If you roll the production number for the hex containing Tormund, adjacent settlements and keeps do not receive resources. Tormund prevents this.

B. Using Development Cards

During your turn, you can play a development card by placing it face up on the table. However, you cannot play a card that you bought during the same turn, unless it is a victory point card (explained below)!

Ranger Patrols

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

In the base game, when I play a ranger patrol card, I can only choose to move Tormund as if I rolled a “7”. I have to move him right away.

After I play a ranger patrol card, it stays face up in front of me. If I’m the first player to have 3 ranger patrol cards in front of me, I get the special card called “Largest Patrol”. This card is worth 2 victory points.

If another player has more ranger patrol cards in front of them than me, they immediately take the Largest Patrol card and its 2 victory points.

Check out the picture below to see what the Largest Patrol card looks like:

Here are some more details about the game’s progress cards.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you play a progress card, you have to do what it tells you to do. Then, you have to get rid of the card by putting it away.

Winning Point Cards

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Winning in this game is all about strategy. Your victory point cards are your secret weapons, and you need to keep them hidden until the perfect moment. Only reveal them during your turn when you’re absolutely certain that you have reached 10 victory points. That’s the magic number for winning the game.

But don’t worry, you can always show off your victory point cards after the game if someone else manages to win. During your turn, you can play as many victory point cards as you want. You can even play them on the same turn you buy them if it means securing your victory.

Here Comes the Win

If you manage to have or reach 10 victory points on your turn, congratulations! You’ve won the game! The moment you hit that number, the game ends abruptly, and you can take pride in your victory.

But remember, you can only win during your own turn. Don’t try to claim victory during someone else’s turn. If the stars align and you somehow find yourself with 10 or more victory points during another player’s turn, you’ll just have to be patient. You’ll have to wait until your own turn to claim the ultimate prize.

III. The Rules of the Brotherhood of the Watch

I am a shield standing against the darkness, guarding the southern thrones. I am a member of the Night’s Watch! We don’t play the Game of Thrones; we are the last barrier holding back the wildlings from invading the warmer lands down south. Winter is approaching.

My brothers have acknowledged me as a natural leader in the Night’s Watch. I oversee a small group in their daily tasks. My responsibility is to ensure that the Wall’s defenses are manned by capable guards. To achieve this, I must secure a steady supply of resources that come from the small settlements, fortified keeps, and roads in the Gift. If I perform well, I can ascend to the position of the Lord Commander.

Hey there! I want to tell you about the exciting rules for Brotherhood of the Watch. It’s a fantastic game that takes place in the world of Westeros, where the Wall, the Gift, and the Wildlings are waiting for you!

Enter the Land of Adventure

Imagine a board that represents the northern part of Westeros. This board is special because it features the Wall, a colossal structure that protects the kingdoms to the south, and the Gift, a valuable piece of land that supports the soldiers guarding the Wall. The board is made up of different types of land, like the Gift, and frames that hold it all together.

But that’s not all! The frame also has spaces for important areas like clan territories, camps, trails, and clearings that are located north of the Wall.

And let’s not forget about the wildlings! They are a group of people who live outside the Wall, in an area called the Frostfangs. During the game, you might trigger events that cause the wildlings to move and become a challenge for you to deal with.

When winter comes, the Wildlings travel from their Frostfangs homes to set up camps in the clan areas. They gather there to prepare for what lies ahead. Once ready, they follow a path that leads them from the camps to a clearing at the foot of the Wall.

In this clearing, something important happens. If there are more Wildlings present than guards on the wall defending against that specific clearing, the Wildlings breach the Wall. They break through and enter the Gift, a land beyond the Wall.

But that’s not all. If the camps in a clan area become too crowded, the Wildlings don’t just sit around patiently. Oh no. They seize the opportunity and rush the Wall, eager to cross it and secure their place in the Gift.

Take a look at the image of the game board below. It shows all the key areas related to the movement of the Wildlings. The black arrows indicate specific locations, while the blue arrows give you an idea of how the Wildlings generally move.

Setting Up the Board

When you’re playing your first game of Brotherhood of the Watch, I recommend following the “Standard Set-up for Brotherhood of the Watch” instructions provided at the back of this rule book.

First, you’ll need to put together the frame. Next, place the terrain hexes inside the frame to create the Gift, just like it’s shown. In a 4-player game, make sure to use all 21 hexes. If you’re playing with 3 players, use 16 hexes instead. Finally, take the number tokens and put them on the designated terrain hexes, following the examples.

Note: It can be really fun (and challenging) to change up the game board by arranging the terrain hexes randomly each time you play. This allows you to try out new strategies and keep things exciting.

Just remember that while you can switch up the terrain hexes, the number tokens should always stay the same.

If you want to use the variable set up, you can find the guidelines in the Rules Reference under Set-Up, Variable. You can also find useful tips under the Set-Up Phase section.

Setup:

If you’re an experienced player, you can use the variable set-up guidelines found in the Reference Rules under Set-Up, Variable and Set-Up Phase.

General Set-up:

Follow the base game set-up instructions on page 2, with the following additions:

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Let’s get started with setting up the game. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get everything ready:

1. First, place the wildling die next to the production dice.

2. Next, take the 4 wall sections and position them on the board according to the illustration on page 5.

3. Now, it’s time to shuffle all of the development cards to create a stack.

4. Place the Longest Road and Largest Patrol cards with their 1 VP side facing up.

5. Don’t forget to place your build cost card facing up, with the wildling tokens depicted.

6. The breach marker should be placed on the “0” space of the wall breach track.

7. Finally, put the 8 VP tokens next to the board.

Great job! Now that everything is set up, it’s time to determine who goes first. Each player will roll the production dice, and the player with the highest roll gets to take the first turn.

Now, let’s move on to setting up the wildlings and getting the game started.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

I underlined the HTML part of the prompt to make it easy for you to locate. I’ve created a reformulation below, but the challenge will be in preserving the HTML markup. I started by describing what the user needs to do and then providing step-by-step instructions in a conversational tone. I also varied the sentence structure and length for better readability.

Welcome! Let’s get started on a journey through the Frostfangs. Here’s what you need to do:

1. **Place the wildling figures on the Frostfangs area of the board.** Don’t worry about which one goes where, just mix them up and keep it a secret.

2. **Set up your settlements on the build cost card.** Put a wildling token face down on each settlement space, and then place one of your settlements on top of each token. Make sure it’s centered!

3. **Create keeps on the build cost card.** Add two wildling tokens and one keep on each keep space. Make it strong and secure!

4. **Form a wildling token pool.** Put any remaining tokens face down beside the board. This will be your stash for later.

And we’re ready to go! Now, let’s prepare the Hero Cards for this adventure.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Okay, let’s get started with the game setup. First, we need to place all the hero cards next to the board. Make sure they’re facing the “A-side” up to form a display.

Each player will then choose a Hero Card. Here’s how it works:

  • In a 4-player game:
  • Player 1 takes “A4” Yarwick
  • Player 2 takes “A3” Tarley
  • Player 3 takes “A2” Marsh
  • Player 4 takes “A1” Mormont
  • In a 3-player game:
  • Player 1 takes “A3” Tarley
  • Player 2 takes “A2” Marsh
  • Player 3 takes “A1” Mormont
Now, let’s talk about the Brotherhood of the Watch set-up:

The set-up is mostly the same as in the base game, but with a few additional steps:

  • First, take 7 guard pieces in your player color.
  • Second, the Brotherhood of the Watch set-up has 3 rounds instead of 2.
  • Rounds 1 and 2 are just like in the base game – you place 1 settlement and 1 road.
  • In round 3, things change a bit. You need to place 1 guard on the wall. Start with player 1 and continue clockwise.

Now, let’s dive into the game play!

When playing Brotherhood of the Watch, things work a bit differently than in the regular game. Instead of rolling just 2 dice, you roll 3. But there’s more! You also roll a special 12-sided die, known as the wildling die. This die determines what happens with the wildlings in the game.

  • Step 1 – Start by rolling the 3 dice. Deal with the two regular production dice first, as the result affects everyone. Then, see if there are any wildlings advancing based on the roll of the wildling die.
  • Step 2 – If you want, you can trade resource cards with other players or trade with the supply.
  • Step 3 – Now it’s time to make some moves. You can build roads, settlements, and keeps. You can also recruit guards or buy development cards. The choice is yours!

When you’ve finished your turn, pass the dice to the player on your left. They’ll start their turn with step 1.

When it’s your turn, you start by rolling the 3 dice. The sum of the 2 production dice determines which terrain hex or hexes will produce resources. The result of the wildling die determines if any wildlings will advance.

1. Roll the 3 dice

Resource production works the same way as in the base game.

Remember: If there is a wildling blocking a terrain hex, it won’t produce resources.

Wildling Advance

A trail is a numbered connection between a camp and an adjacent clearing. The result of the wildling die roll (1 to 12) can match one of these trail numbers. If there is a wildling in the camp connected to that trail number, the wildling will advance down the trail to the clearing.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: So, here’s the situation: There are two wildlings lurking in the cave people clan area. Now, this area is connected to not just one, but two trails – we’ll call them the “4” trail and the “5” trail. Got it so far? Great.

Now, let’s say you roll the wildling die and it lands on a “4”. In that case, you’ve got to move the wildling that’s chilling in the camp next to the “4” trail to the clearing. Simple enough, right?

But here’s the twist: If there happens to be a brave guard standing tall on the wall section, defending that clearing, then no breach occurs. The defense is strong!

However, if luck is not on your side and you roll a “5”, then things get interesting. In this scenario, the wildling will actually advance down the “5” trail, but don’t worry – there’s a guard defending the clearing there, so no breach happens.

Now, let’s suppose there are multiple wildlings lurking in that clan area. In that case, the wildling that’s closest to the numbered trails will be the one to advance. The other wildlings, though, will each move one camp closer to the clearings, making sure to fill any unoccupied spots. It’s a bit like a party shuffle, you see?

Wildlings

When it comes to wildlings in Catan: A Game of Thrones, there are three types to consider: climbers, giants, and regular wildlings. Each type has a different effect when they advance to a clearing.

Let’s take a closer look at each type:

  • How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMessClimbers are speedy and agile. When a climber advances, they immediately jump over the Wall and block the first hex directly south of the wall section that is not already occupied by a wildling. It’s important to note that this doesn’t count as a wall breach.
  • How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMessGiants are massive creatures that can cause quite a ruckus. When a giant advances, it removes itself from the clearing and also removes the guard on the “1” space of the wall section defending that clearing. You can then take back your guard and return the giant to the Frostfangs. If there are any other guards remaining on that wall section, they each move to the next lowest number on the wall. If a giant advances to a clearing where there is no guard, it breaches the wall, which can create some chaos.
  • How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMessA regular wildling will remain in the clearing if there are equal to or fewer regular wildlings than the number of guards defending that clearing. If there are more wildlings than guards, they breach the wall.

Wall Breaches

When there’s a wall breach, if there’s a guard in space 1 of that wall section, remove it and return it to its owner. Any other guards on that wall section (starting from the lowest number and going to the highest) will move to the lowest-numbered unoccupied space(s).

Then, one by one, each wildling on that clearing will jump over the Wall. Each wildling will block the first hex directly south of the Wall (as shown by the red arrows). A blocked terrain hex will not produce resources.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: I spy 2 regular wildlings hanging out in the “5, 6” clearing, and there are also 2 guards chilling on the wall, protecting that clearing.

So I rolled the wildling die and got a “5”. Turns out, there’s a regular wildling party happening right beside the “5” trail.

This wildling dude decides to join the fun and heads down the trail into the “5/6” clearing. Now we’ve got a total of 3 wildlings crashing the party, while only 2 guards are left to defend.

Uh-oh! The wildlings break through the wall. Say goodbye to the guard hanging out in the “1” space on the wall.

But wait, there’s more! The 3 wildlings then leap over the wall and block the first 3 hexes to the south. Finally, the remaining guard on the wall moves from the “2” space to the “1” space.

Oh boy, here’s another rule: whenever the wall gets breached, the breach marker moves 1 space down on the breach track. If we have 3 wall breaches, game over!

Wildling Rush

Imagine this: You’re part of a clan, living peacefully in your designated area. But suddenly, something extraordinary happens. A fifth wildling joins your clan! This triggers what we call a wildling rush, a thrilling event that shakes up the whole clan.

During a wildling rush, the two camps closest to the trails leap into action. It’s like a race to the finish line! The wildling in the lowest camp takes the lower numbered trail, marked by a bold red arrow. Meanwhile, the wildling in the next closest camp goes for the higher numbered trail, indicated by a vibrant blue arrow.

If this wildling thing still has you puzzled, don’t worry, I’ve got your back. Let me break it down for you in simpler terms.

So, here’s what you do. We’ve got these 5 wildling camps, right? And there are a total of three wildlings left. You’ll need to fill in the camps one by one.

First, take the wildling from the third camp and move them to the first camp. Easy enough, right?

Now, take the wildling from the fourth camp and move them to the second camp. Keep up with me!

Finally, grab the wildling from the fifth camp and move them to the third camp. And voila! All the camps are filled up.

2. Trade with The Supply (3:1)

Now, let’s talk about trading. It works just like in the regular game, but with a little twist. Normally, you’d trade at a rate of 4:1. But in this wildling version, the rate is 3:1. Got it?

4. Build

Building works the same way as before, but there are a few extra things to keep in mind.

  • You can build guards now. It’s pretty handy, trust me.
  • Whenever you build a settlement, a keep, or grab a special VP card, you’ll reveal some wildling tokens. Those wildlings have a home to go to, so they’ll migrate to their clan area.
  • The Longest Road and Largest Patrol are only worth 1 VP each now. Just a little change, but worth knowing.

Create new Wildlings with Wildling Tokens

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When you start building a settlement, each of your build cost cards will have one wildling token placed underneath it. And when you build a keep, two wildling tokens will go under each one.

Now, here’s how the wildling migration works. Whenever you construct a settlement, you have to reveal the token underneath it. This token tells you which type of wildling will migrate (it’s shown in blue) and which clan area it will migrate to (in red). You have to repeat this process twice for each keep you build. When you construct a keep, you place a wildling token from the pool underneath the settlement that you return to your build cost card.

Here’s something to keep in mind. Every time you acquire the Longest Road or Largest Patrol special card, you must draw a random wildling token from the pool next to the game board. That token will be used to “migrate” a wildling.

After you’ve used a wildling token, place it face up beside the game board. And if the face-down wildling token pool ever runs out, you’ll need to mix up the face-up tokens and create a new pool.

Creating a Guard Requires: 1 Brick, 1 Wool, and 1 Lumber

Hey there, I’ll walk you through the process of building a guard. To get started, you’ll need some specific items. Grab your materials and let’s get going!

First off, you’ll need a brick. Yes, you heard me right, a good ol’ brick. Next, we’ll need a piece of wool. Maybe you have some lying around, or you might need to go on a little adventure to find some. Lastly, we need some lumber. You know, those sturdy wooden planks you can find in abundance.

Now, here comes the fun part. Take your brick, your wool, and your lumber and gather them all in one place. Arrange them neatly side by side. Picture it like three little buddies, ready to become something amazing.

With your materials in place, it’s time to begin. Take your brick and carefully set it down. Feel its weight in your hands. Let’s give it a purpose, shall we? Now take your wool and gently position it next to the brick. They’re becoming friends, aren’t they?

Last but not least, grab your lumber and complete the trio. Arrange it alongside the brick and wool, forming a solid foundation. It’s like they were meant to be together.

And there you have it, my friend. Your very own guard, crafted with your own hands. Now you can protect and defend, all thanks to your resourcefulness and creativity. So go out there and show the world what you’ve built!

Remember, all great things start with a simple combination of materials. Just look at what you’ve created – a testament to your ingenuity. Now go forth, and let your imagination roam free!

When you’ve paid for a guard, just put it on the empty slot with the lowest number on any section of the wall you want. The more guards you have, the more victory points (VP) tokens you get. If you have three guards anywhere on the wall, you get 1 VP token. And if you have five or more guards, you get an extra VP token for a total of 2 VPs. But remember, if the number of guards falls below three or five, you have to give back the VP tokens. Now, let’s talk about the Hero Cards.

How to play Catan A Game of Thrones Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Your hero card is like your secret weapon. It gives you a special advantage that can help you win the game. When you use your hero card for the first time, you have two options:

1. You can return it to the hero card display and choose another hero card from there. Put the new hero card face-up in front of you.

2. You can flip your hero card over to its “B-side”. This lets you use your hero’s ability again later. But after you use your hero card twice, you have to put it back in the hero card display with the “A-side” facing up. Then you can choose another hero card.

If you need a quick reference for all the heroes in the game, you can check the back cover of the Rules Reference.

Remember: you can’t use a hero card on the same turn you take it. And you can’t trade, give away, or steal hero cards from other players.

Now let’s talk about what happens when the game ends.

Let’s talk about the three possible ways that the Brotherhood of the Watch game can end:

  1. If the Wall has been broken into three times, the game comes to an immediate end. If at this point you have the most guards on the wall, you win. In case of a tie, we’ll address that below.
  2. If there are more than seven (8 or more) wildlings in the Gift, the game also ends immediately. Again, if you have the most guards on the wall, you win. In case of a tie, we’ll handle it below as well.
  3. If you manage to accumulate 10 victory points by the end of your turn, you win.

Keep in mind: Unlike most Catan games, you can only secure victory at the end of your turn. Throughout your entire turn, you still need to deal with the wildlings just like usual. This means that the game could end abruptly (refer to point 1 or 2 above).

Breaking Ties for the Most Guards
  • If there’s a tie in the number of guards on the wall, the player with the most victory points breaks that tie and emerges victorious.
  • If there is still a tie, the player who has the oldest guard on the wall will win (the guard on the lowest number in any wall section).
  • If there is still a tie, the player who has the guard in the most western location will win (the one closest to the Frostfangs).

I. Base Game Rules

Note: If you’re new to Catan, make sure to learn and play the base game rules before trying out the full game!

Trade with the supply at a rate of 4:1 without a trade route
