Imagine sailing the seas in the adventurous 18th century. Picture six pirate ships eagerly waiting to plunder wealthy ports and seize treasure from unsuspecting vessels. The vast ocean is divided into distinct sections, each representing a space for the players to navigate.
As you embark on this thrilling journey, you’ll discover that each player has three safe havens marked in their own color on the game board. However, beware! The pirate ships themselves are not owned by any player. In order to commandeer these ships for your own purposes, you must tempt the pirates with bribes. And what is the irresistible bait that will entice a Caribbean pirate? Barrels brimming with the finest rum, of course!
Let’s take a closer look at the components that make this sea-faring adventure come to life.

- Here’s what you’ll find in the box:
- A game board
- 35 coins (doubloons)
- 4 sets of 7 bribe cards
- 16 treasure chests
- 6 pirate ships
- Instructions
Ready to Set Sail?
My goal as a player is to tempt the pirates into bringing their treasure chests to my safe havens, rather than my opponents’.
When it’s my turn, I can offer rum to a ship. The more rum I offer, the farther the ship will move, based on the barrels on the bribing chip.
A ship that I’ve bribed can steal a treasure chest from a port or from another ship. It can also trade treasure chests with another ship, or deliver a chest to one of my safe havens.
The player with the most doubloons at the end is the winner.
Exploring the Game Board
Getting Started
First, grab your cardholder and a set of 7 bribing cards in your favorite color. Make sure to position the cardholder where you can clearly see the names of the ships.
Take the 16 treasure chests and shuffle them, placing them face down. Now, randomly select 6 treasure chests and put them face-up on the designated ports.
The remaining 10 treasure chests should be arranged in piles of two each on the five special spaces in the upper right corner of the board.
Don’t forget about the coins! Place them next to the board. Here are their values:
- gold = 10,000 doubloons
- silver = 5,000 doubloons
- copper = 1,000 doubloons

Alright, listen up, mateys! Here’s what ye need to do to get ready for the pirate booty adventure:
First things first, scatter them 6 pirate ships randomly on the startin’ spaces marked with them ship symbols. Don’t ye worry ’bout them symbols though, they don’t mean nothin’ durin’ the game.
Now pay attention, ya scurvy dogs! These pirate ships don’t belong to any of us scallywags. That means we gotta bribe ’em pirates to do our biddin’ like loyal crewmembers. We need to play smart and think ’bout our strategies, savvy?
Every time ye capture one of them harbor cities or bring a treasure chest to yer safe haven, ye earn some doubloons. And trust me, doubloons are worth their weight in gold!
How to Play the Game
Dealing with Pirate Ships
Ahoy there, matey! Let me share with ye the secrets of this game. Avast! We be talkin’ ’bout pirate ships and such. Arr!
Now, let us delve into the murky depths of the game and discover how to deal with those scurvy pirate ships! Arg!
When ye encounter a pirate ship on yer adventure, ye have a choice to make, me hearties. Ye can either fight ’em like a true swashbuckler or ye can bribe ’em to leave ye be. Arr, decisions, decisions!
If ye choose to bribe the pirate ship, ye be needin’ some booty – gold, that be! Ye can offer to trade some of yer hard-earned gold to persuade the pirate ship to sail away peacefully. The more gold ye offer, the higher yer chances of gettin’ rid of those sea dogs! Yo ho ho!
On the other hand, if ye choose to fight the pirate ship, ye better be prepared for a fierce battle! Get yer cannons ready, load ’em up with cannonballs, and let ’em rip! Blast those scallywags out of the water! Aye, it ain’t easy, but it’s a thrill like no other!
Beware, though! The outcome of yer encounter depends on a few factors, me matey. Ye need to take into account the strength of yer own ship, the number of cannons ye have, and the skills of yer crew. Aye, nothin’ worth havin’ comes easy, eh?
So, weigh yer options, me hearties! Will ye choose to surrender some gold or will ye fight like a true pirate? The choice be yours to make. May the winds be at yer back and the seas be in yer favor, me mateys! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

When each round begins, you and your fellow players will have the opportunity to allocate your bribing cards to the six ships on your cardholder. Take a moment to consider your options and decide which ships you want to place your cards on.
Once you have chosen your strategy and allocated your cards, you will place your seventh card face down next to your cardholder. This card will serve as a tie-breaker in case of any draws.
Once all players have finished placing their bidding cards, everyone will give their OK, indicating that they are ready to proceed. It’s important to note that once you give your OK, you can no longer change your bidding cards for this round. So make sure you’re confident in your choices!
Moving the Ships by Bidding
Now it’s time to move the ships! We’ll start with the ship called Arriba. Each player will reveal their bidding card for Arriba by placing it face up in front of their cardholder. This way, everyone can see who bid the most barrels.
The player who made the highest bid for Arriba will have the honor of moving the ship. The number of sea spaces they will move Arriba is equal to the number of barrels in their bid. So, if you bid five barrels, then you will move Arriba five spaces on the sea.
In the game, when I move my ship, I have to be careful because each thief card that my opponent plays will reduce my ship’s movement by one space. But the good news is that I don’t have to use up my entire movement allowance if I don’t want to.
It’s important to remember that only one ship can be in a sea space at a time. So if there’s already a ship there, I’ll have to find a way to move my ship around it. Luckily, ships are allowed to move through safe havens, so I can use those as shortcuts. And if I want to take a break or make a pit stop, I can also stop my ship at a safe haven.
Once I’ve finished moving the Arriba, it’s time for the next ship, the Bravo. The players reveal their bids for the Bravo, and the player with the highest bid gets to move it. They can move it in the same way as the Arriba. After the Bravo comes the Caribic, then the Diabolo, the Evita, and finally, the Fuego.
If there’s a tie in the bidding, things get interesting. The players who tied have to decide whether they want to use their tie-breaker cards. To do this, they both place their hands flat over their tie-breaker cards and then, at the same time, lift their hands to reveal their decisions.
When I see a face-up card, it means that the player is making a higher bid than before (even if it’s just zero, which is still more than -1). The player who places the highest bid gets to move the ship. However, they can only move it as far as the number of barrels shown on the original card. They have to subtract any thief cards from their original bid before determining how far they can move the ship.
The number of barrels on the tie-breaker card doesn’t affect how many spaces the ship can move. But if there are any thieves on the tie-breaker cards, the number of spaces moved is reduced accordingly.
Once a tie-breaker card is revealed, it can’t be used again until the next round. If the tie-breaker results in another tie, then the ship doesn’t move in that round and stays where it is. Face-down tie-breaker cards can be used to break another tie.
Getting Treasure Chests

When I win the bid and move my ship, I become the active player. As the active player, I have several options: I can capture a harbor city to steal the treasure chest stored there, or I can steal a treasure chest from another ship. I also have the option to swap a treasure chest with another ship or deliver a treasure chest to a safe haven.
It’s important to note that each ship can only carry one chest at a time, and the value of the chest must be visible on the ship’s deck.
I have the freedom to take these actions in any order I choose, before or after I move my ship. It’s up to me to decide when to make these moves during the ship’s movement.
- Capture: If my ship is in a sea space with a harbor city that has a treasure chest, I can steal the treasure chest by loading it onto my ship. For my efforts, I receive 2,000 doubloons as a reward.
The Importance of Sailing Tactics in Treasure Hunting
Hey there! Are you an aspiring treasure hunter? Well, let me tell you, sailing tactics play a crucial role in your quest for hidden riches. In today’s guide, we’ll dive into the exciting world of sailing tactics and explore how you can use them to your advantage.
Understanding the Basics
First things first, let’s go over the three main tactics you need to know: steal, swap, and deliver. These tactics can make or break your treasure-seeking adventures, so pay close attention!
- Steal: Picture this – your ship is sailing right next to another ship carrying a treasure chest. You have the opportunity to steal that chest and claim it as your own. All you have to do is move the treasure chest to your ship. It’s that simple!
- Swap: Imagine this scenario – your ship has a treasure chest, and there’s another ship nearby also carrying a treasure chest. With the swap tactic, you can exchange your chest with the other ship’s treasure. It’s like a game of treasure chess!
- Deliver: Here’s the final tactic – delivering treasure chests to safety. If your ship is sailing close to your safe haven and you have a treasure chest on board, you can deliver it to your safe haven. Just move that chest from your ship to your safe haven, and you’ve secured your loot!
Mastering the Art of Treasure Delivery
Delivering treasure chests to safety is the ultimate goal in your treasure hunting endeavor. So, how do you become a master at it? Let me give you a few essential tips:
- Plan your route: Before setting sail, map out the best route to your safe haven. Take into account any obstacles or rival ships along the way. It’s all about staying one step ahead!
- Be strategic: Timing is everything. Strategically use the steal and swap tactics to gain an advantage over your competitors. Keep them guessing and protect your precious loot.
- Stay alert: Always be on the lookout for potential threats or opportunities. Keep an eye on other ships and anticipate their moves. A quick mind and sharp eyes will take you far!
There you have it, my fellow treasure hunter. Sailing tactics are the key to your success. By following these tips and mastering the art of treasure delivery, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a legendary explorer. So, hoist those sails, embrace the unknown, and let the treasure hunt begin!

When I’m playing the game, there are a few times where I can bring a treasure chest to safety:
- If the ship I’m moving goes through a safe harbor and unloads a treasure chest there,
- If the ship I’m moving stops at a safe harbor and unloads a treasure chest there,
- If the ship I’m moving is already at a safe harbor and unloads a treasure chest there.
Regardless of which scenario happens, the person who owns the safe-haven (usually me, but it could be someone else) earns a certain number of doubloons shown on the treasure chest (between 4,000 and 8,000 doubloons).
Afterwards, I place the treasure chest face down on the city names on the chest to show that it has been taken and won’t be available for the rest of the game.
Listen up! I’ve got an important rule for you: never, ever throw a treasure chest overboard when you’re playing this game! And you know what else? The doubloons you earn are public, which means you’ve gotta show them off for everyone to see in your play area.
Now, let me tell you what happens in the following rounds.
Once all six ships have been moved, even the ones that couldn’t move because of a tie, the round comes to an end.
After each round, it’s time to place the next two treasure chests from the supply. Start from the left and go to the right, putting those treasures in the harbor cities with players’ names. This keeps going for five rounds until all the treasure chests have been placed on the board.
Then, everyone gets their bidding cards back and a new round begins. The ships stay right where they ended up at the end of the last round.
Now, let’s talk about how the game ends.
The game is over when at least one player has:
- 62,000 doubloons (if there are two players)
- 41,000 doubloons (if there are three players)
In today’s game, each player starts with 31,000 doubloons. But here’s the catch: there are only four players in total. It means that if you divide the total number of doubloons equally, every player will get 7,750 doubloons.
To win the game, you have to play until the end of the current round. The player who has the most doubloons at the end of the round will be declared the winner. So, it’s time to strategize and make the most of your doubloons to come out on top!
