Buccaneer Game Rules
Arr, me mateys! Avast ye and listen up to the rules of the Buccaneer game! Ye be settin’ sail on a grand adventure on the high seas, where ye be takin’ on the role of a brave pirate captain. The goal be simple: be the richest pirate on these treacherous waters!
Now, me hearties, let me tell ye the rules ye need to heed. Prepare yer ship, hoist up yer sails, and let’s navigate these rules together!
Rule number one: Ye start with a ship and a small crew. The sea be vast and full of treasures. Ye need to explore, find hidden islands, and obtain as much loot as ye can. Keep an eye out for other pirates, though, for they be wantin’ yer booty too!
Rule number two: The key to bein’ a successful pirate is strategizin’ and plunderin’. Ye need to decide which path to take, which islands to visit, and which treasures to collect. Some treasures be worth more doubloons than others, so choose wisely, me matey!
Rule number three: Beware the perilous storms and treacherous sea creatures! They be lurkin’ on these waters, ready to sink yer ship and take away all yer hard-earned loot. Keep yer crew safe, repair yer ship, and stay vigilant, for dangers lie beneath the waves!
Rule number four: Ye can also engage in battles with other pirates. Set yer cannons ablaze and defend yer treasure or go on the offense and attack other pirates to steal their booty. It be a risky business, but the rewards be great for those who be brave enough to engage in combat!
Rule number five: The game be played in rounds, and when the last round be over, the pirate with the most doubloons be declared the winner. Be cunning, be ruthless, and be the one who reigns supreme as the richest pirate on the high seas!
Now, ye scurvy dogs, ye be ready to embark on this grand adventure! Set sail, follow these rules, and may fortune favor the bold! Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Arrr, chaos reigns near the port! A swarm of pirates is eyeing the treasures aboard the mighty trading ships, plotting and scheming to snatch the golden loot.
Quickly, ragtag crews are assembled, analyzing which ships to plunder for their playthings, doubloons, and riches.
But even the fiercest captain must tread cautiously, for each pirate demands a fair share of the spoils. If the treasure is meager and the payment high, the captain shall bear the burden.
In the end, the pirate with the most riches shall claim victory.
Yo ho, let us set the scene:
The ship cards are shuffled and placed face-down. Three cards are then revealed in the center of the table. Each player selects five pirates in their desired color and places them face-up in front of them. Moreover, each player starts with ten ducats in their coffers.
When I play the game, I make sure to have the rest of the money and the 24 pieces of booty laid out for all players to see. It’s important for everyone to know what’s available. If there are fewer than 5 players, we take out any extra pirates so that the game doesn’t get too crowded.

Please Note: Before we begin, I want to share an important point with you. When playing this game, the three ships that are face-up need to be played first. Once all three of these ships have been boarded, then and only then can three new ship cards be turned face-up.
Let’s Talk About Ship Cards

A Fun Game to Play
Hey there! I’m excited to tell you all about this cool game I’ve been playing. It’s a game where we take turns going clockwise. The oldest player goes first. And when it’s your turn, you have two options to choose from.
- Moving a pirate
- Boarding a Ship
Your goal is to do one of these two things if you can. But if you don’t have any available pirate pieces (maybe they’re all in other piles), you can’t move in that round.
A. Moving a Pirate
Here’s where the fun begins! You can take your own pirate or a stack of your pirates and place them on top of an opponent’s pirate or pirate stack.
After you’ve made your move, you put the newly formed stack in front of you. Congratulations! You’re now the captain of this boarding party. The pirate stack belongs to you because your counter is on top.

Forbidden:
Once you create a stack, you can’t break it up. You can’t place your own pirate or pirate stack on top of another one that you own.
You can’t make a move that would result in a pirate stack with more than 9 pirates. You aren’t allowed to see the value of the pirates hidden in a stack.

B. Taking Control of a Ship
If I want to become the captain of a ship, there are a few steps I need to take. First, I need to have enough pirates in my stack. The ship card will have a number on it, which tells me how many pirates I need to have in order to take control of the ship.
Once I have enough pirates, I can place my own stack on the ship card to show that I am the captain. This means that I am now in charge of the ship and its booty!
Dividing the Treasure
Now that I’m the captain, it’s time to divide up the treasure. I get to choose one of the pieces of booty shown on the ship card. I take this piece from the general stock and add it to my collection.
The player who owns the second pirate in the stack also gets a piece of booty. They can choose the other piece shown on the ship card, but only if there is a second picture. If there isn’t, they don’t get any booty.
But that’s not all – I also get some money! I take the amount shown on the ship card from the stock. However, I have to pay my crew for their help in taking control of the ship. I pay them the amount of money indicated on their pirate pieces. This is a way to thank them for their hard work!
Have you ever wondered about the peculiar pirates with question marks instead of numbers? I certainly have. These enigmatic individuals are quite intriguing. You see, if they join in the pirate activities, they receive a payment that is indicated next to their question mark on the ship they’re on.
Once all the participating pirates have been paid, each player gets their pirate pieces back and places them face-up in front of them.
Insufficient Booty
But what happens if there isn’t enough treasure to pay all the pirates belonging to other players? Well, in that case, the captain has to dig into his own pockets. If he doesn’t have enough money, the shortage is paid from the general stock and given to the other players.
Now, even though the captain is broke, he gets to keep his collection of treasure.
Exciting New Ship Cards
Now, let me tell you about the ship cards. When a ship is successfully raided and emptied of its treasures, it is removed from the game. And guess what? When all the face-up ship cards have been boarded, three brand new ship cards are revealed for us to explore!
Hey there! Just a quick note before we dive in: remember that in the game, there are 15 ship cards, and 3 ship cards are laid out a total of five times.
Time for Mutiny!
If you have 3 or more of your playing pieces in another player’s stack, you can stage a mutiny and make the captain board a ship.
When it’s the captain’s turn (the player who owns the stack), you – the mutineer – can challenge the captain to board a ship. If there are multiple ships to choose from, the captain gets to decide which one to board.
Remember, though, that the pirate stack must have enough pirates to board the ship. That’s a rule you can’t ignore!

Example: Three of black’s playing pieces are in red’s stack. So, these pieces are not blocked for too long, black can rebel. When it is red’s turn, black challenges him to a battle.
The battle is carried out as usual. The stack is broken up, and the pirate pieces are returned to their owners.
If the captain has multiple stacks where a rebellion is happening, only one ship is attacked. The captain chooses which stack to use for the attack.
“Red” must accept the challenge and decides to attack the larger ship, even though he would have preferred to wait for an even bigger ship with more treasure.

The Game’s End
Once all 15 ships have been boarded, the game comes to a close and it’s time to tally up the scores. Points are given for ducats and pieces of booty. If one player owns the most pieces of booty of a certain kind, they are paid the amount displayed on the booty in ducats.
If multiple players have the same number of a specific kind of booty, they split the corresponding amount; any leftover amount is reduced.
Players who have pieces of booty that didn’t earn them any money receive a small consolation prize – 1 ducat for each of those pieces of booty.
If you want to win the game, you need to have the most money. It’s as simple as that. The player who ends up with the most money is declared the winner.
Example: My friends Karin and Nico found 2 treasure chests each, while Kim and Nina only found 1 chest each. Since Karin and Nico found the most treasure chests, they have to split the 15 ducats between them (each of them gets 7 ducats). Kim and Nina each receive 1 ducat for their treasure chests.
