Setup

Stack the picture/word cards so that the 3-letter words are facing up and turned in the same direction. Put the stack in the tray above the cube slots, facing the child. (The Word Cover is flipped up and not in use).

How to Play the Game

Welcome, my friend! Let me show you how to have a blast playing this awesome game. Here’s how it goes:

1. First, take a look at the picture on the card. Can you tell me what it is? Take your time and think about it. It could be a pig, a jar, a pie, the sun, or something else entirely.
2. Next, take a look at the word written below the picture. This word is the name of the thing in the picture. But here’s the twist: I want you to spell it out loud, letter by letter. So for example, if the picture is of a dog, you would say “D-O-G”.
3. Now it’s time to grab those little letter cubes. The first letter of the word is super important. Can you find that letter on one of the cubes? Perfect! Now, place that cube into the first slot in the tray. Make sure it matches the letter as it appears on the card.
4. Keep going! Find the second letter of the word on one of the cubes and put it in the second slot. Then do the same thing for the third letter. Once you have all three letters in the tray, you’ve spelled out the word in cubes!
5. Congratulations! You’ve just accomplished something amazing! Let’s celebrate by saying the word one more time and spelling it together. After that, I’ll give you another card and we can spell out more three-letter words in the same exciting way. Are you ready?

I take a quick glance at the word under the cover, then I hide it again. Now, I’m not just matching letters with letters, but I’m actually spelling the whole word from memory.

To make things a bit more challenging, I flip the cover to hide the word part of the top card in the stack, and then I carefully slip out that top card.

Now, I have to figure out what the picture is on the new card and spell it from memory. I slide the card out from under the cover, and it’s ready for me to tackle. Let’s keep going!

Playing with a Friend

When you play Boggle Jr. with a friend, the game becomes even more exciting! Here’s how you can enjoy the game together:

• We take turns, my friend and I. Every time one of us spells a word correctly by lifting the cover and checking the spelling, we win that card and move on to the next one.
• If I spell a word wrong, that card goes to the bottom of the pile, and my turn ends. But don’t worry! When that card comes back up, I get another chance to spell it correctly.
• We keep taking turns until we’ve used up all the cards. The player who has won more cards at the end of the round is the winner!
