Let’s dive into the world of advertising and earn some AdVersity Cash! Join me, Max Madison, in becoming the first ad agency to hire 1 SpokesAnimal, 1 SpokesPerson, and yours truly (and trust me, I don’t come cheap).

Getting Started

We don’t usually use that term in the advertising world, but it fits right in here.

To prepare for AdVersity, there are just TWO things you need to do:

  1. Give each player – now called an “agency” (if you’re serious about this advertising thing, start referring to yourself as an ad agency) – the following:
  2. 1 Voter
  3. 5 Ad Slogan cards
  4. $100,000 AdVersity Cash
  5. Choose one player to be the banker. They will have an agency and play the game like everyone else, but they’ll also handle all the money.

Playing the Game

Round 1

  1. To start the game, put the stack of Product cards facedown in the middle of the play area and flip over the top card. Each Product card has four different products that your agency can choose to sell. If you see things on the card that you don’t understand, that means this game might be too advanced for you. It’s okay, you can leave the table. Thanks!
  2. Next, each agency picks one Ad Slogan from their hand and matches it with one of the four products on the Product card. Put the Ad Slogan card facedown in front of you. Once you’ve done this, you can’t change your Ad Slogan card during the round.

Oh, and one more thing, I’m gonna secretly set my Voter wheel to the number that matches the product I’m advertising and keep it face down.
  • Now, it’s up to you guys. Each of you has to figure out which product I’m trying to sell you and set your Voter wheel to that number. Keep it face down in front of you. Ready? Go!

    If all of us agencies unanimously decide on a product different from the one chosen by you, the Advertiser, you’ll be slapped with a $200,000 fine for pulling off a false, misleading advertisement. Trust me, we can’t have that in the advertising industry, even though it’s hard to keep a straight face while saying it.

    Let’s get into the fun part – the game!

    Round and Round

    Once each agency has had a turn as the Advertiser, they receive an additional Ad Slogan card to replace the one used in their initial presentation. Then, a new Product card is revealed, and Round 2 starts with the agency to the left of the agency that started as the Advertiser.

    Subsequent rounds follow the same rules, and the advertising game continues until one agency has earned enough money to emerge victorious. (find out more in “Winning the Game”)

    In every round, when I finish my turn, I have the option to hire a SpokesCelebrity if I have enough money. If I decide to do so, I pay the bank and receive a card representing my SpokesCelebrity. I then place the card in a plastic stand and proudly display it in front of my agency!

    It’s important to remember that hiring SpokesCelebrities can be costly and may leave my agency with less cash. However, this shouldn’t be a problem unless I end up facing a Big Flop!

    If, by some incredibly rare chance, two or more agencies find themselves with the exact same amount of cash, we have a special “Play-Off” round. Here’s how it goes: a shiny new Product card gets flipped over, and every agency gets dealt a fresh Ad Slogan card, making sure they have a nice stack of five cards in their hand.

    Now, each tied agency gets an extra turn to strut their stuff. The rest of us, the non-tied agencies, get to be the judges and cast our votes for each ad, just like in the regular game. We take this Play-Off round seriously, ’cause at the end of the day, we need a winner. The agency with the most cash after the Play-Off round is crowned the “Advertising Mogul” and they get to bask in their glory.
