Let’s Play 7 Wonders Duel
So, you want to play 7 Wonders Duel, huh? This game is all about claiming victory, and there are 3 ways to do that: military supremacy, scientific supremacy, or civilian victory. Sounds pretty cool, right?
If you’re not sure how to win, don’t worry! I’ll explain everything you need to know. Just keep reading!
The Game Bits
Wonder Card
Hey there! Let’s talk about the cool Wonders from the Age of Antiquity. They’re like big cards, and each one has a name, a cost to build, and a special effect. Neat, right?
Military Tokens
Hey there! Let me tell you about military tokens. These special tokens are like rewards that a city earns when it wins a battle against its enemy. Pretty cool, right? They’re a way of celebrating a city’s success in war.
Progress Tokens
Do you know what progress tokens are? They are like little rewards that you can earn by finding two scientific symbols that match each other.
Conflict Pawn
The Conflict pawn shows which city has a stronger military on the board.
About the Game Board
Let me tell you about the game board. It’s where all the military action happens between the two cities involved in the rivalry. The board is divided into different zones and spaces. You’ll notice that the last space on each end is where the player’s capital is located. It’s pretty important to protect your capital, as it plays a significant role in the game. The board is also the place where you’ll find the Military tokens and the Progress tokens that you can use during the game. These tokens can really make a difference in your strategy, so keep an eye on them.
Coins
Coins are valuable resources in the game. They serve several purposes, such as helping you build Buildings and acquire resources through trade. Additionally, your Treasury, which is the total number of coins you have, can earn you victory points when the game ends.
Guild And Age Cards
Hey there! In the world of 7 Wonders Duel, the amazing Age and Guild cards are pretty special. They’re actually like buildings, you know? Each one of these cards has a cool name, a sweet effect, and a cost for building it.
Guess what? There are 7 different types of Buildings in the game, and you can easily identify them by the color of their border.
Let me break it down for you:
- First, we have the Raw materials Buildings. These ones have a brown border. They’re pretty cool because they produce resources that you’ll need to play the game. Check out this image to see what they look like:
- Next up, we have the Manufactured goods Buildings. These ones have a grey border. They’re also resource-producing buildings, just like the Raw materials Buildings. Take a look at this image to get a better idea:
- Now, let’s talk about the Civilian Buildings. These buildings have a blue border and they’re all about victory points. Yep, you heard me right! These buildings are worth victory points, so they’re definitely worth having. This image will show you what they look like:
- Last but not least, we have the Scientific Buildings. These ones have a green border and they’re pretty special. Not only do they give you victory points, like the Civilian Buildings, but they also grant you a scientific symbol. How cool is that? Take a peek at this image to see what the Scientific Buildings look like:
Hey there! Let me break down the different types of Buildings you’ll find in 7 Wonders Duel. We’ve got three main categories: Commercial Buildings (yellow cards), Military Buildings (red cards), and Guilds (purple cards).
Commercial Buildings are pretty cool because they’re worth coins, produce resources, change the trading rules, and sometimes even give you victory points. They’re like a big bundle of benefits!
Military Buildings, on the other hand, increase your military power. They’re marked with a handy little red icon, like this:
Finally, we have the Guilds. These Buildings let you score points based on specific criteria. They’re the key to racking up some serious victory points!
Just a quick note: the Age III deck only has Guild cards. There are no Raw materials (brown cards) or Manufactured goods (grey cards) in that deck, but you’ll find plenty of Guilds to make up for it.
Now, How Much Do These Cards Cost?
The cost of a card is indicated by the area under the color strip on the Age cards. If that area is empty, then lucky you! The Building is totally free and doesn’t require any resources to construct. Gotta love those zero-cost cards!
As I delve into the world of building my own civilization, I come across various structures and resources that play a crucial role in its development. There is so much to consider, such as the Lumber Yard, the Stone Pit, the Baths, and the Arena, each with its own unique requirements and benefits.
The Lumber Yard is a wonderful starting point, and it’s even better because it’s free! It provides my civilization with the essential resource of wood, which can be used for a multitude of purposes, from constructing buildings to creating tools.
Now, when it comes to the Stone Pit, there is a cost to consider. It costs me 1 coin, but in return, I gain access to a valuable resource: stone. Stone is a sturdy material that I can use to fortify my buildings and make them more resilient. It’s a small investment that can have a big impact on the overall strength of my civilization.
Next comes the Baths, which require 1 Stone to be built. While it may seem like a minor requirement, it’s worth it because the benefits are tremendous. The Baths not only provide a place for cleanliness and relaxation but also contribute to the happiness and well-being of my citizens. It’s an essential addition that promotes a healthy and content population.
Lastly, there is the mighty Arena. This structure calls for 1 Clay, 1 Stone, and 1 Wood, making it a substantial investment. However, the rewards are equally substantial. The Arena not only symbolizes the prowess and strength of my civilization but also serves as a hub for entertainment and competition. It brings glory and admiration to my people, elevating their spirits and generating a sense of pride and unity.
With these structures in mind, I stand at the crossroads of decision-making. Each one offers its own advantages and benefits, but I must choose wisely. As I weigh the costs and benefits, I envision the future of my civilization and the role these structures will play in its growth and prosperity. It is a challenge, but an exciting one. I am ready to embark on this journey, making thoughtful choices that will shape the destiny of my civilization.
Starting from Age II, some Buildings have a dual requirement for construction: cost and a free condition. To construct these Buildings for free, you must have previously constructed another Building indicated by a symbol in the cost area.
For example, to construct the Horse Breeders, you can either pay 1 Clay and 1 Wood, or you can possess the Stable.
Let’s get into the setup:
1. Place the board in the middle of the play area, between the two players.
2. Put the conflict pawn on the neutral space on the board.
3. Take the 4 Military tokens and place them face up on their designated spaces.
4. Grab the Progress tokens, shuffle them, and randomly select 5 to place face up on the board. Put the remaining tokens back in the box.
5. Each player starts with 7 coins from the Bank.
And that’s how you set up the game! Now you’re ready to begin.
Choosing Wonders for the Game
Here’s how we decide which Wonders to use:
- First, someone has to go first. It doesn’t matter who, but someone has to start.
- Then, we take the 12 different Wonders tiles and mix them up so they’re all shuffled.
- Next, we put 4 random Wonders tiles face-up in the middle, between both players.
- The first player gets to pick 1 of the Wonders tiles they like.
- The second player gets to pick 2 of the Wonders tiles.
- After that, the first player gets to take the last remaining Wonders tile.
- We put 4 more Wonders tiles in the middle and do the whole thing over again, but this time we start with the second player.
Once we finish this part, each player will have 4 Wonders tiles to use in the game. We put them in a line on the left side of our area where we’re playing.
For your first time playing, you don’t have to do the Wonders Selection part. You can just use the following Wonders tiles:
Alright, let’s give this a shot!

Welcome to “Great Wonders of the Ancient World”
Do you ever wonder how some of the most amazing structures in history were built? I’m talking about wonders like:
- The Pyramids
- The Great Lighthouse
- The Temple of Artemis
- The Statue of Zeus
These magnificent landmarks have fascinated people for centuries. They are not only incredible to look at, but they also hold great historical and cultural significance. They are a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the people who built them.
But have you ever thought about what it takes to choose the right wonders for your own civilization? It’s not an easy decision to make, considering the multitude of options available. Each wonder has its own unique benefits and can greatly impact your strategy.
One Deck Per Age
Let’s start with the basics. To begin the game, return 3 cards from each Age deck back to the box without looking at them. This ensures that each Age will have a different set of cards for every game you play.
Next, it’s time to add some spice to the mix. Randomly draw 3 Guild cards and add them to the Age III deck without peeking at what they are. These Guild cards introduce new ways to score points and can significantly influence your overall gameplay.
Now that we have set the stage, it’s time to dive into the ancient world and build your own civilization. Will you be able to create wonders that will be remembered for centuries to come?

Building in 7 Wonders Duel
In this game, you and I will be busy constructing Buildings and Wonders. Most of these Buildings require resources to build. Some Buildings are free while others can be purchased with coins. There are also Buildings that require resources, but have a special condition that allows them to be built for free. On the other hand, the Wonders always require resources to build.
Free Building
There are some cards that don’t require any resources and can be built for free.
For example: The Lumber Yard can be constructed without any cost.
Understanding Card Costs
Some cards require resources to build them.
To construct these cards, you need to gather the necessary resources and/or trade for them with the bank.
Generating Resources
A city’s resources come from different sources, such as specific cards and Wonders.
For example, in my city, I generate 1 Stone, 3 Clay, and 1 Papyrus.
If you have all the resources listed on the card, you can build it.
For instance, I can build the Baths with 1 Stone or the Garrison with 1 Clay, since I have enough of those resources in my city.
However, I can’t build the Apothecary (which requires 1 Glass) without trading for it.
Important: When building structures in the game, you don’t need to spend resources. You can use them every turn, throughout the entire game. Keep in mind that a city’s production is never reduced, unless there’s a special circumstance.
Trading
There will be times when you want to build a Building but you’re missing some of the required resources. Don’t worry! You can always buy the missing resources from the bank. The cost of each missing resource will change as the game progresses. Here’s how it’s calculated:
COST = 2 + the number of symbols that represent the same resources produced by the brown and grey cards of the opposing city.
Clarifications
- When you’re playing the game, it’s important to remember that the cost of purchasing resources is based on what your opponent has in their city, but you pay the bank for your purchases.
- There’s no limit to how many resources you can buy on your turn.
- Trading costs don’t take into account the resources produced by yellow cards and Wonders.
- Some yellow cards, like commercial Buildings, change the trading rules and make the cost of certain resources just 1 coin.
For example: Let’s say Bruno has a Quarry that produces 2 Stones.
- If you want to buy one or more stones from Antoine, you’ll have to pay 4 coins for each stone.
- If Bruno needs a third Stone, he only has to pay 2 coins because Antoine’s brown cards don’t produce any Stones.
Paying with coins
Some cards have a price in coins that you need to pay to the bank when you build them.
For example, the Scriptorium costs 2 coins and the Stone Pit costs 1 coin.
But some cards require both coins and resources to build. You have to pay the coin price to the bank, and then you have to either produce the needed resources or trade for them.
Let’s say you want to build the Caravansery card. It costs 2 coins, 1 Glass, and 1 Papyrus. In this case, you would have to pay a total of 7 coins. That’s 2 coins for the card, 5 coins for the Glass (if you don’t produce it yourself), and 2 coins for the Papyrus (if you don’t produce it yourself).
There is also a condition called Free Construction, where cards can be built for free if you have specific cards already built in your city. These chains of cards allow for free construction without having to pay any coins or resources.
Buildings in different ages can have a special symbol attached to them. This symbol looks like a chain, and it’s colored white.
In Ages II and III, some buildings include this symbol along with their resource cost. The symbol represents a connection to a building from a previous age.
If you already have the building with this symbol in your city, you can construct the new building for free. It’s like getting a bonus!
Example: Antoine built the Baths, so now I can get the Aqueduct for free because it’s connected to the Baths. Bruno, on the other hand, built the Palisade, which means when it’s Age III, he can build the Fortifications for free.
How to Play the Game
A game starts in Age I and goes through Age II before finishing in Age III. If someone wins a supremacy victory, whether through military or scientific means, the game ends right away.
Setting Up the Game
At the start of each Age, the corresponding deck gets shuffled, and then you lay out the 20 cards following the structure of that particular Age. But you need to be careful because some cards are face up while others are face down.
It’s My Turn!
In the game 7 Wonders Duel, it’s finally my turn to play! I’m so excited to dive into Age I and see what awaits me.
Okay, let me explain how this works. On my turn, I get to pick a card from the card structure. But not just any card – I have to choose an “accessible” one. Now, what does that mean? Well, it’s simple. An accessible card is one that isn’t hidden underneath other cards. So, right now, I can only choose from the Baths, the Stone Pit, the Lumber Yard, and the Scriptorium. The rest of the cards have to wait for their moment.
When you have picked a card, you can play it in one of three different ways:
- Build the Building
- Discard the card to get coins
- Construct a Wonder
Once you have played your card, you must reveal any hidden cards that are now accessible.
- Some Wonders let you play again. You start your new turn after revealing the newly accessible cards.
- If you have a replay effect that would let you take another turn at the end of an Age (when the structure is empty), you lose the effect.
I. Build a Building
To build a Building, you pay its cost and place it in front of you. This Building now belongs to your city.
As the game goes on, organize your Buildings by color to make it easier to read your city.
II. Exchange cards for coins
When you decide to exchange a card, you can discard it in order to receive a number of coins. You will earn 2 coins plus an additional coin for each yellow card already in your city. This money will be added to the treasury of your city.
The discarded cards will be placed face-down next to the game board. You and the other players can look at the discard pile at any time.
For example: Let’s say I decide to discard the Aqueduct card. Since I already have the Tavern and the Clay Reserve in my city, I would earn a total of 4 coins.
III. Building a Marvelous Structure
When constructing a Wonder, you will need to pay the cost of the Wonder itself, rather than the cost of the Age card. Once you have paid the required resources, place the Age card face down, partially covered by the Wonder card that you are building. It’s important to note that the Age card you used has no effect on the game; it is only used as a marker to indicate the construction of the Wonder.
For example: Let’s say my name is Antoine and I decide to construct the Colossus. This Wonder requires 5 units of Clay and 1 unit of Glass. After paying the necessary resources to build the Colossus (not the cost of the Age card), I slide the Age card face down under the right side of the Colossus and then move the Conflict pawn 2 spaces.
7 Wonders, and That’s It!
There can only be 7 Wonders in the game. Once one of the players builds the 7th Wonder, the remaining Wonder, which hasn’t been built yet, is immediately put back in its box.
For example, let’s say Antoine just finished building the Colossus. In total, 7 Wonders have been built during the game (5 by Antoine and 1 by Bruno). Now Antoine has to return the Pyramids to the box.
The Age Comes to an End
An Age reaches its conclusion once all 20 cards in the structure have been played.
Now it’s time to get ready for the next Age and its structure.
When determining who starts the next Age, the player with the least powerful military gets to choose. We measure military power based on the position of the Conflict pawn on the board. If the pawn is on your side, your military is weaker. However, if the pawn is in the middle, the player who played the last card in the previous Age becomes the first player of the next.
Military Power
The number of shields on your military Buildings (the red cards) or Wonders directly influences your military power. Each shield allows you to move the Conflict pawn one step closer to the opposing capital. As a result, the Conflict pawn will often move back and forth along the track.
Hey there! Let’s talk about what happens when the Conflict pawn moves around the playing area. When it enters a zone, which is marked by dotted lines, something interesting happens! The active player gets to use the effect of the corresponding token and then puts it back in the box.
Now, let me give you an example to make things clearer. Imagine Antoine has just built the Archery Range, a military Building with 2 Shields. Cool, right? When he moves the Conflict pawn two spaces towards the opposing capital, he enters a new zone. At this point, Antoine gets to activate the Military token. That means Bruno, his opponent, has to discard 2 coins. After that, the token goes back in the box, ready for future use.
Oh, There’s More!
If the Conflict pawn ends up in your opponent’s capital space, you win the game straight away! That’s called achieving military supremacy, and it’s the ultimate victory.
Science & Progress
Did you know that the game features 7 distinct scientific symbols? It’s pretty fascinating! Each symbol represents a different scientific concept. Now, let me break it down for you.
Every time you find a pair of identical scientific symbols, you can choose one of the Progress tokens on the game board right away. You’ll keep that token in your city until the game ends.
Just to clarify: you can find the scientific symbols on the scientific Buildings (green cards) and also on a Progress token.
Scientific Supremacy
If you collect 6 different scientific symbols, you win the game instantly.
End of the Game
The game ends immediately if someone achieves military supremacy, scientific supremacy, or when Age III ends.
Civilian Victory
If no player achieves supremacy before the end of Age III, the player with the most victory points wins the game.
To calculate your total points, add:
- I don’t make this Progress for Wonders with the Shield symbol.
- This Progress doesn’t change any military cards that were built before it was used.
- Whenever I construct guild cards that give me coins, I take the coins from the bank right then and there, just once.
- When the game ends, I can choose a different city to gain victory points from than the one I chose to gain coins from.
In the game, there are several ways to earn victory points. Let’s take a look at them:
– As the Conflict pawn moves, you earn military victory points. The number of points depends on the position of the pawn, with 0, 2, 5, or 10 points up for grabs.
– Your Buildings, represented by blue, green, yellow, and purple cards, can also earn you victory points.
– Your Wonders contribute to your victory points as well.
– Progress cards are another source of victory points.
– Keep an eye on your city’s treasury. Every set of 3 coins is worth 1 point.
Now, what happens when there’s a tie? Well, if both players have the same number of points, we look at the victory points earned from Civilian Buildings (blue cards). The player with the most victory points from their Civilian Buildings wins. But if even this is a tie, then both players share the victory.
To help you keep track of your points and record your memorable games, there’s a scorebook included in the game box.
Description of the Symbols:
The Military Token
Let’s talk about the symbols on military tokens and what they represent. When I see those symbols, I can’t help but wonder what they mean. It’s fascinating how a simple image can convey so much information. Military tokens are like secret codes, telling us stories of courage, honor, and sacrifice. They are a window into the world of the military, where every symbol has a purpose and a meaning.
One of the key symbols on military tokens is the eagle. The eagle represents freedom and strength. It’s a powerful symbol that embodies the spirit of the military. When someone sees an eagle on a military token, they immediately know that it’s a symbol of pride and patriotism. The eagle is a symbol that we can all relate to, regardless of our background or beliefs.
Another common symbol on military tokens is the flag. The flag represents unity and loyalty. It’s a reminder that we are all part of a larger community, bound together by our shared values and love for our country. When you see a flag on a military token, it’s a symbol that reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military. It’s a symbol that reminds us to be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy and to never take them for granted.
The star is another symbol often found on military tokens. The star represents hope and guidance. It’s a symbol that reminds us to always strive for greatness and to never give up. When you see a star on a military token, it’s a symbol that encourages us to reach for the stars and to make a difference in the world. It’s a symbol that reminds us that anything is possible if we believe in ourselves and work hard.
These symbols on military tokens are more than just pictures. They are powerful reminders of the values that shape our military and our nation. They are symbols that inspire us to be our best selves and to never forget the sacrifices made by those who serve. When you see these symbols, take a moment to reflect on what they mean and to honor the brave men and women who wear them with pride.
Stealing a Small Fortune
When I play the Looting card, I have the power to take away 2 or 5 of your precious coins. It all depends on the token. And guess what? I get to keep them for myself! But don’t worry, the token goes right back to where it came from – the box.
Now, if you’re a bit short on coins, things can get pretty rough for you. If you don’t have enough coins to spare, you lose all of them. Ouch! That’s gotta hurt.
Moving Forward
Agriculture
Hey there! Let’s talk about agriculture. It’s this amazing thing where we grow crops and raise animals to provide food for ourselves. When I say agriculture, just imagine farms and all the hard work that goes into producing the food we eat. Fascinating, right?
So, here’s the deal. Agriculture is super important because it helps us meet our food needs. Think about it – without agriculture, where would our food come from? We wouldn’t have fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, meat, or any of the delicious things we enjoy every day. It’s pretty mind-boggling!
Now, pay attention. You know what’s neat about agriculture? It’s not just about food. Nope, it’s about more than that. Agriculture also plays a big role in our economy. When people are involved in agriculture, they grow crops and raise animals to sell. This helps them make money and support their families. It’s like a win-win situation!
Oh, and here’s something cool about agriculture – it has been around for a long, long time. Like, way before high-tech gadgets and fancy machines. People have been practicing agriculture for centuries, using their knowledge and skills to cultivate the land and harvest crops. It’s truly a timeless art!
Now, let’s talk about the benefits. Agriculture not only provides us with food and income but also helps to preserve our planet. When we engage in sustainable agriculture practices, which means taking care of the land and using resources wisely, we can protect the environment and prevent soil erosion. It’s our way of giving back to Mother Nature!
So, the next time you sit down for a delicious meal or see a picturesque farm, remember the incredible importance of agriculture. It’s what keeps us fed, supports our economy, and helps us take care of our planet. Now that’s something to appreciate!
And there you have it – a glimpse into the fascinating world of agriculture. I hope you enjoyed this little adventure with me. Until next time, keep exploring and learning!
Building the Marvels
When you construct any future wonders, you’ll be able to reduce the required resources by 2. This means that you’ll have more flexibility in choosing which resources to use for each construction.
Economy
When your opponent trades for resources, you get the money they spent.
But be careful! This only applies to the money spent on acquiring resources, not the coins used for building.
Let me explain: Your opponent’s trade discounts, like Stone Reserve, Wood Reserve, Clay Reserve, and Customs House cards, might change the price they pay for resources. However, with the Economy Progress token, you earn the exact amount of money they spent.
The Fascinating World of Law
Welcome! I’m here to tell you about the captivating realm of law. Brace yourself for an exploration into the intriguing world of rules and regulations.
Law is like a secret language that cleverly hides in plain sight. It’s a scientific symbol that holds immense power and knowledge. As you embark on this journey, you’ll discover the fascinating secrets that lie behind it.
Have you ever wondered how society functions smoothly? Well, law is the invisible force that keeps everything in check. It’s like a guiding light that ensures fairness and justice are meted out to all. Every decision, action, and interaction we have is influenced by law.
Imagine a world without law. Chaos would reign supreme! Without laws, there would be no order, no protection, and no guarantees. Law creates stability and establishes a framework within which we can thrive.
Law is a double-edged sword; it can protect us and punish us. It sets the boundaries that keep us safe, while also outlining the consequences of crossing those boundaries. We live in a society governed by laws, and our actions are expected to adhere to these established guidelines.
But law is more than just rules to be obeyed. It’s a means to seek justice and a tool for change. It allows us to challenge injustices, protect our rights, and advocate for a better world.
Interpreting law requires a keen mind and a deep sense of empathy. Sometimes, the law might seem complex and overwhelming, but don’t worry! With a bit of curiosity and persistence, you can unravel its intricacies.
So, if you’re fascinated by the world of law, get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure. Explore the rich tapestry of legal concepts, delve into captivating cases, and unlock the hidden treasures of justice.
Building Mastery
When I become a master at constructing buildings, something amazing happens. Every time I work on a new civilian building, I can save 2 resources! Isn’t that great? I get to choose which resources this discount applies to, so it’s totally up to me. How incredible is that? I can’t wait to become a skilled builder and start taking advantage of this fantastic benefit. With Building Mastery, I can make my construction projects more efficient and cost-effective. It’s like being a magician, only with buildings instead of rabbits!
Mathematics: A World of Numbers
Wow, can you believe how amazing and powerful numbers are? I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all! So, at the end of the game, you earn 3 victory points for each Progress token you have. Yep, that’s right, just by having those tokens, you’re getting closer to victory. It’s like a little boost that helps you out. Pretty cool, huh? I mean, numbers have this fantastic ability to do things like that.
Mindset
Imagine this: you have a valuable token in your possession that is worth 7 victory points. It’s not just any token, it’s a symbol of your success and accomplishment. This little object represents all the knowledge you’ve gained, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the growth you’ve experienced.
How it Works
When you play this token, any military Buildings you have (the red cards) will become stronger. Each of your military Buildings will gain an additional Shield, which makes them more powerful.
For example, let’s say you have a military Building that originally has 2 shields. Once you play this token, that Building will now have 3 shields. The more shields a Building has, the further you can move your Conflict pawn towards the enemy capital.
In other words, this token helps to boost the strength of your military Buildings, giving you an advantage in the game.
Keep in mind that this token only affects your military Buildings, not any other types of Buildings or cards.
So, if you’re looking to strengthen your military Buildings and gain an edge in the game, this is the token you should focus on.
Remember, the more shields your military Buildings have, the better they will perform in the game. Good luck!
Note: If you have any questions or need further clarification, please refer to the rulebook.
Theology
From now on, all the Wonders I build are treated like they have the “Play Again” effect.
But be careful, Wonders that already have this effect are not affected (a single Wonder can’t have the “Play Again” effect twice).
Urbanism
Right off the bat, grab 6 coins from the Bank.
Whenever you build a Building for free by linking it to other structures (you know, like a chain), you bank an extra 4 coins.
Guild Cards
Builders Guild
When the game is over, you can earn 2 victory points for every Wonder that was built in the city with the highest number of Wonders. It’s a simple way to score big at the end!
Welcome to the Moneylenders Guild!
I wanted to talk about something that’s super important when it comes to playing the game. Have you ever seen the card called the Moneylenders Guild? Well, it’s pretty interesting. Let me explain why.
