Campaign Overview

There are two ways to play Gloomhaven: campaign mode and casual mode.

Campaign Mode

In campaign mode, we get to form our very own group of characters and go on a series of missions one after another. This way, we can unravel an exciting story and make choices that will shape our adventure. However, we can only play a scenario in campaign mode if we meet all the necessary requirements mentioned in the Scenario Book. Also, once we complete a scenario in campaign mode, we can’t play it again with the same party.

Casual Mode

Hey there! When you’re in casual mode, you can play any scenario on the world map, even if you haven’t achieved any goals or completed it in campaign mode. You can still earn experience, money, and loot treasure, as well as work towards completing your personal quests. However, any story text or rewards at the end of the scenario don’t count. If you’re in a party playing in campaign mode, you can switch to casual mode to replay a scenario you’ve already completed. Just remember, it’s not recommended to play a scenario in casual mode if you haven’t experienced it in campaign mode first.

The following rules will focus on playing the game in campaign mode.

Campaign Board

• First and foremost, we have a map of Gloomhaven and its surroundings. You’ll notice numbered circles on the map, each representing scenarios that can be unlocked as you progress. Once a scenario is unlocked, a sticker will be placed over the corresponding numbered circle. And when you complete a scenario in campaign mode, you’ll mark the blank space on its sticker to show your accomplishment.
• Next, we have a reference grid for the map. This handy grid will help you locate scenario locations more easily, making your adventure more seamless.
• Lastly, we have a space dedicated to tracking global achievements. Whenever you unlock a global achievement, you’ll place its corresponding sticker in one of the slots here. It’s a visual reminder of the milestones you’ve reached!

A prosperity track is a way to measure and represent the prosperity of Gloomhaven. As the prosperity of Gloomhaven increases, we mark a square on the prosperity track for each point of increase, starting from the left and moving to the right. When certain thresholds are reached, the prosperity level of Gloomhaven goes up.

Party Sheet

When a new group of players comes together to play the game, they form a party. To document the formation of the party, they start a new entry in the party sheet notepad. On this notepad, they keep track of party achievements, reputation, and location.

A party can continue from scenario to scenario and from one play session to another, as long as the players want. Over time, the makeup of the party will change, especially as characters retire and new characters are created.

Switching up the party composition is totally cool, and it’s not just about the characters – it’s about you too. You can create new parties whenever you feel like it, but just remember to make new characters if you do.

So, what exactly goes into a party sheet?

• Let’s start by giving our party a cool name! Every awesome party needs one. Let your imagination run wild!
• If our adventure is part of a bigger story, we’ll need to keep track of where we are. This is especially important for connected quests.
• We also have a space for jotting down any important notes. So, if there’s anything we want to remember, we can write it down here.
• Whenever we accomplish something remarkable, like completing a difficult task or solving a tricky puzzle, we’ll note it as a party achievement.
• Our party’s reputation is crucial. It can go up or down depending on our actions. We’ll keep track of our reputation by making marks on the reputation track. We can also see the discounts and penalties for high and low reputation next to the track.

Remember, to the right of the track, the item price discounts and penalties for high and low reputation are visible.

Creating a Character Sheet

• Each character class has a list of perks. Whenever you gain a perk, mark it off on the list.
• If you want to track other aspects of your character, like goals or achievements, you can use the additional notes space. You can also mark checkmarks here that you earn through battle goals.

When you create a character, you’ll be given two random personal quest cards. You get to choose one to keep, and the other goes back to the personal quest deck. Your personal quest is the main reason why you’re part of a party.

A personal quest card has:

• A description of the quest and what it’s about.
• Specific requirements that need to be fulfilled to complete the quest and the rewards you’ll receive when you do so. Once you complete your personal quest, you can retire your character.

Design Cards for Random Items

Hey there! So, whenever you come across a treasure tile and see that it’s offering a “Random Item Design” as a reward, here’s what you gotta do. You pick a card from the random item design deck. Now, these cards may look like your regular item cards, except they have a cool blue back. Check out the image on the right to see what I mean.

Now, once you’ve drawn a card, you need to find another card with the same reference number in the deck of unavailable items. Grab both of these cards and add them to the city’s supply of available items. Keep in mind though, it’s totally possible for the random item design deck to run out of cards. If that happens, any additional random item design rewards won’t do anything.

Random Side Scenario Cards

Hey there! Let me tell you about a cool thing called the “Random Side Scenario.” Whenever you find this as a reward after looting a treasure tile, something exciting happens. You get to draw a card from the random side scenario deck! This card unlocks a new scenario for you to play, and you even get to place a cool sticker on the campaign map to mark your progress.

But here’s the twist: once you draw the scenario card, it’s removed from the game. So choose wisely! There’s a limited number of scenarios in the random side scenario deck, so be mindful of that. If the deck runs out, any additional rewards won’t have any effect.

What about the City and Road Event Cards?

Players, get ready for an adventure filled with surprises at every turn! As we journey through our campaign, we’ll come across city and road events that will test our bravery and decision-making skills. These events are like little stories, waiting to unfold. So, when we encounter an event, we’ll draw a card from the corresponding deck and read what’s on the front side.

Remember, event cards have content on both sides, but let’s not peek at the back just yet! We’ll focus on the front and see what exciting situation awaits us. The city and road events may have different artwork and storylines, but they work in the same way.

To play the game, you need to know the number of the event.

Each event has two choices, and you only read the description of the choice you made.

After making a choice, you’ll see the outcome, which includes a thematic text and game play effects in bold.

In this game, icons will guide you on what to do with the event cards after resolving their outcomes. You can either remove the card from the game or put it back at the bottom of the corresponding event deck.

When you open the game box and start the campaign, create a city event deck and a road event deck by using city and road events numbered 01 through 30. Throughout the campaign, you may be instructed to add or remove certain events from these decks.

Once a card is added to an event deck, remember to shuffle the deck. However, if you’re returning a played card to the deck, simply place it at the bottom without shuffling.

Unopened Boxes And Envelopes

When you play the game, you’ll come across a set of sealed boxes and envelopes. Each of these has a symbol or letter on it. Sometimes, the game will tell you to open one of these boxes or envelopes. If it’s a character class box, you can now choose that class for your new character. If it’s something else, the contents inside will give you instructions on how to use them.

You’ll be asked to open boxes or envelopes when you complete personal quests or meet certain conditions.

Town Records

Within the game box, there’s a small sealed book called “Town Records”. When one of the characters retires, I open this book and start reading it from the beginning. Sometimes, the book tells me to pause until certain conditions are met. It’s like uncovering a secret story as I progress.

Now let’s talk about achievements. They are like milestones in the game that help me keep track of important changes in the world. Achievements are divided into two types: global achievements and party achievements.

Global achievements are like big accomplishments that affect the whole game world. They unlock new scenarios and open up new possibilities for everyone playing the game.
