The Expert Rules of Metropolys

Metropolys is an intriguing board game that allows you to step into the shoes of a city planner. It’s a game that combines strategy and skill, where you must carefully allocate your resources to build the most successful metropolis. The rules of the game may seem complex at first glance, but with a little guidance, you can quickly become an expert.

Rule 1: Understand the Basics

Before diving into the world of Metropolys, it’s essential to grasp the fundamental concepts. The game revolves around building towers of different heights and claiming buildings in the city. Each building has a specific point value, and the player with the highest score at the end of the game wins. Take the time to read through the rulebook and familiarize yourself with the basic mechanics.

Rule 2: Plan Your Strategy

When playing Metropolys, it’s crucial to have a strategy in mind. Think carefully about where you want to place your towers and which buildings you want to claim. Consider how your opponents might react and plan accordingly. By having a well-thought-out strategy, you’ll increase your chances of success.

Rule 3: Watch Your Resources

Resources are limited in Metropolys, so it’s important to manage them wisely. You’ll need resources to build towers and claim buildings, so make sure you have enough to accomplish your goals. Keep a close eye on how many resources you have and think strategically about when to use them. Don’t waste your resources on unnecessary moves.

Rule 4: Adapt to the Changing Landscape

The cityscape in Metropolys is ever-evolving, with new buildings and opportunities arising throughout the game. Stay flexible and adapt your strategy as the game progresses. What may have been a good move in the beginning may no longer be advantageous later on. Keep an open mind and be willing to adjust your plans.

Rule 5: Pay Attention to Your Opponents

While building your own metropolis is crucial, it’s equally important to keep an eye on what your opponents are doing. Observe their moves and anticipate their strategies. This will allow you to make more informed decisions and potentially block their advances. Remember, in Metropolys, it’s not just about your own success but also about impeding your opponents’ progress.

Rule 6: Embrace Calculated Risks

Metropolys is a game that rewards calculated risks. Sometimes, taking a chance can lead to great rewards. Assess the situation, consider the potential outcomes, and if the risk is worth it, go for it. Just remember to weigh the pros and cons carefully and be prepared for any possible consequences.

Rule 7: Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Above all, remember that Metropolys is a game meant to be enjoyed. While competition can be fierce, don’t lose sight of the fun factor. Take pleasure in the strategic choices you make and the satisfaction of watching your metropolis grow. Ultimately, the most important rule is to have a good time, win or lose.

So, now that you know the expert rules of Metropolys, it’s time to dive into this exciting city-building adventure. Prepare your strategy, allocate your resources wisely, and aim to create the most successful metropolis. Good luck, and may the best city planner win!

So here’s how the Expert version of the game works. It’s kind of like the regular version, except there are a few extra things you need to keep in mind if you want to score big.

The Tallest Building: This version of the game focuses on the height of the buildings. Instead of having a specific number of buildings, each player has a mix of small, medium, and tall buildings.

When the game comes to an end, the players who have built the tallest building in each district get to take the highest building tokens.

Goals: In this version, each of us has two secret goals to achieve: neighborhood and area. These area goals are different from the ones we had in the Family version.

The goals in the Expert version require us to build multiple buildings. You can find more details about these goals in the “Secret Goals” player aid.

Setting Up

The setup is the same as in the Family version, except we won’t be dealing with the 4 area cards from that version.

Instead, let’s shuffle the 5 area cards from the Expert version. Each of us will take one card, keep it secret, and place it face-down in our play area. We can discard the remaining area card without looking at it. We’ll do the same with the neighborhood cards.

Finishing the Game

Hey there! Let’s talk about what happens when the game is about to end. As soon as any player finishes building their last building, the game comes to an end. Exciting, isn’t it? Now, this is when things get really interesting. All the players reveal their secret cards, and we get to count up their points. How cool is that?

Here’s a quick overview of how it works:

  • If a player has a secret card that matches the color of their buildings, they get extra points based on the value of the buildings.
  • Each player also gets points for any completed rows they have on their building board. More completed rows mean more points!
  • And finally, any leftover resources that a player has at the end of the game will give them even more points. It pays to be resourceful!

So, there you have it! When the game comes to an end, it’s all about revealing those secret cards and counting up those points. May the best player win!

In each district, if I construct the tallest building, I get a highest building token, which gives me 5 prestige points! If there’s a tie, we look at the size of our second tallest buildings, and if needed, our third tallest buildings, and so on. If we still can’t break the tie, we both get a 5 point highest building token.

Look at this example: Blue built the highest building, so they get the token. And in this example, Red gets the token. Blue and Red both have 2 tall buildings, but Red has 1 more building.

Now, for each trendy neighborhood token I have, I earn 3 prestige points.

When you’re playing the game, there are a few ways to earn and lose prestige points.

  • If you have a subway token, you’ll get 1 prestige point. But if you have an archaeological site token, you’ll lose 1 prestige point.
  • If you own the subway card, you’ll earn 3 prestige points. But if you have the archaeological site card, you’ll lose 2 prestige points.
  • If you build a building in the type of neighborhood shown on your neighborhood card, you’ll earn 2 prestige points.
  • You can also earn points by meeting the requirements on your area card. The number of points you earn is indicated on the card. Just remember, each building can only count towards one area objective. But there’s an exception: you can use one building to meet both an area objective and a neighborhood objective.
