Evading Monsters in Arkham Horror
So, picture this: You find yourself in the mysterious town of Arkham, where eerie occurrences and unexplainable events are the norm. As you navigate the streets, a feeling of unease washes over you, as if unseen eyes are watching your every move. Suddenly, a fearsome creature emerges from the shadows, its monstrous form sending shivers down your spine.
This is the world of Arkham Horror, a game where you face unspeakable horrors from another dimension. But fear not, my friend, for I am here to guide you in evading these fearsome monsters and ensuring your survival in this treacherous town.
Understanding Monster Movement
First things first, let’s talk about how monsters move in Arkham Horror. These creatures are not bound by the same rules as us. They don’t simply walk from one location to another. No, their movement is far more unpredictable.
Each monster belongs to a specific type and has a corresponding symbol on its token. Some monsters, like the dreaded Black Man or the awe-inspiring Dunwich Horror, have special abilities that affect their movement. It’s crucial to understand how these monsters operate if you want to outsmart them and stay safe.
Using Intuition and Strategy
When you encounter a monster, you have two options: fight or flee. While taking on these abominations head-on may be tempting, it’s often wiser to choose the latter. Here’s where your intuition and strategy come into play.
Before making a decision, take a moment to assess the situation. Look at the monster’s movement restrictions, its abilities, and the location you’re currently in. Is there a nearby portal leading to another world? Are there any helpful items or allies around? Consider all these factors before deciding on your course of action.
As you explore Arkham, keep in mind that monsters have their own agendas. They may be drawn to certain locations, chasing clues or responding to specific events. Understanding their motivations can give you an edge in avoiding them and staying one step ahead.
Drawing the Monster’s Attention
Now, let’s say you find yourself in a sticky situation and need to draw the monster’s attention away. There are a few tricks you can employ to divert their gaze.
One method is by making noise. Some investigators possess abilities or items that allow them to generate noise tokens. These tokens can attract monsters and lure them away from your current location. It’s like a siren song for these otherworldly creatures.
Another method is by engaging in combat with the monster. Engaging in battle will not only distract the monster but may also be necessary to prevent it from pursuing you. Use your weapons, spells, and abilities to weaken the creature and create an opportunity for escape.
Teamwork and Cooperation
Remember, you are not alone in this fight against the darkness. Arkham Horror is a cooperative game, which means you can rely on your fellow investigators for support.
If you find yourself cornered by a monster, don’t hesitate to call for help. Your teammates may possess skills or abilities that can give you the upper hand, or they may be able to lure the monster away while you secure your escape route.
Communication and coordination are key in Arkham Horror. Sharing information, strategizing together, and offering assistance when needed will greatly increase your chances of survival.
In Conclusion
So, my friend, when it comes to evading monsters in Arkham Horror, remember to stay vigilant, use your wits, and rely on your companions. By understanding how these creatures move, using intuition and strategy, drawing attention away when necessary, and working together as a team, you can navigate the horrors of Arkham and emerge victorious.
So here’s the deal: when I’m investigating and I try to leave a place with a monster, or I stop moving in a place with a monster, I have two choices. I can either fight that monster head-on or try to escape from it.
When I’m trying to escape from a monster, I can do an Evade check. Basically, I need to use my Sneak skill to see if I can get away. The monster’s Awareness value, which you can find in the upper-right corner of its movement side, affects the difficulty of my check. Usually, the difficulty is 1, unless the monster has a special ability that says otherwise.
If I manage to pass the Evade check, hooray! I successfully evade the monster, and I can keep going with my turn as usual. I can continue moving or do whatever I want in the area. But if I fail the check, oh no! The monster catches up to me and attacks. I’ll have to fight it.
I can tell you a little secret, something that many people don’t know. When I’m investigating and I come face-to-face with a terrifying monster, I don’t always have to fight it. I can actually outsmart it and stay right where I am. No combat required!
Imagine this: I’m exploring a spooky location, and suddenly, a hideous creature appears before me. Instead of panicking, I use my wits and evade the monster. But here’s the really interesting part – I don’t have to run away. Nope, I can just stay right there, in the same area as the monster, without any immediate danger.
Now, here’s where things get even more exciting. Since I’m in the same area as the monster, I can even enter a mysterious gate if one happens to be in that location. Pretty cool, right? So, if I manage to evade the monsters during the Movement Phase, I can later enter the gate during the Arkham Encounters Phase. It’s like a strategic game of cat and mouse!
Let me give you an example to illustrate how this works. Let’s say my friend Pete is in the Northside area, and suddenly a fearsome Star Spawn confronts him. Instead of fighting it, Pete is clever enough to evade the creature successfully. But he’s not done with the Star Spawn just yet. When the next Movement Phase arrives, he’ll have to face the monster again. This time he’ll have to decide whether to evade it once more or confront it head-on. It’s a challenging choice, but that’s what makes the game exciting!
If you find yourself in a situation where there are multiple monsters in an area, you will need to evade each monster one by one, in any order of your choosing. If you are unsuccessful in evading a monster, the monster will attack you, dealing its combat damage, and you will have to engage in combat with that monster. If you defeat the monster, you will still need to face any remaining monsters in the area that you have not yet fought or evaded. It is important to note that even if you fail to evade just one monster, your movement in that area will come to an end.
For example, let’s say you are faced with a Star Spawn and a Shoggoth. In order to continue moving towards the Curiositie Shoppe, you would need to evade both monsters. If you choose to evade the Star Spawn first and are unsuccessful in your attempt, you will not be able to move any further. However, if you are able to defeat the Star Spawn in combat, you will still need to decide whether to fight or evade the Shoggoth.
