In the game of Thrones, the players engage in a fierce battle to control various areas and gain power. This quest for dominance over strategic territories is a crucial aspect of the game. But what exactly does it mean to control an area, and why is it so important?

When I play Game of Thrones, I often find myself pondering the significance of controlling areas. As I strategize and make decisions, I realize that seizing specific locations can be the key to victory. By occupying these regions, I can gain resources, defend against attacks, and exert my influence over the game board.

But how do I actually establish control over an area? Well, the rules dictate that I must have more units in a region than any other player. It’s a simple concept, really. The more troops I have in a territory, the stronger my hold becomes. With this power, I can sway battles in my favor and establish a firm presence in the game.

Strategically choosing which areas to control is no easy task, though. The game board is vast and filled with diverse regions, each offering different advantages and challenges. Some areas provide valuable resources, such as castles or strongholds, which can enhance my position. Others offer strategic positions, allowing me to block my opponents’ movements or launch surprise attacks.

As I assess the board and weigh my options, it’s crucial to consider the significance of each region. Some areas may seem insignificant at first glance but hold the potential for great strategic value. Others may appear desirable but carry hidden risks. It’s a delicate balance, and I must carefully analyze the potential benefits and drawbacks of each location.

Once I’ve identified the areas I wish to control, acquiring them becomes my primary objective. This often involves engaging in intense battles and forging alliances with other players. The outcomes of these conflicts can dramatically shape the course of the game, so every decision I make must be thought through and strategic.

But why is controlling areas so important in the first place? Well, it grants me certain advantages that can be the key to victory. For one, controlling areas provides me with resources that I can use to strengthen my position and expand my influence. Additionally, it allows me to block my opponents’ movements, limiting their options and forcing them to reconsider their strategies.

Controlling areas also grants me a sense of security. By establishing a strong presence in strategic locations, I can defend against attacks and discourage my opponents from challenging me. When a House has at least one Footman, Knight, or Siege Engine in a land area, or has previously established control there by placing a Power token, it is said to control that area.

How to Establish Control of an Area

If a player removes all of their units from a land area, they risk losing the benefits of controlling that area unless they choose to establish control.

When a House vacates a land area (meaning all of its units leave during a March Order), they can decide to establish control by placing a Power token from their available power in the vacated area. It’s important to note that a House cannot establish control over a sea area. Once the token is placed on the game board, it symbolizes the local nobles’ support and the House’s investments in guards, tax collectors, and loyal bureaucrats.

If my friends come back into the area, the Power token stays there, untouched (and keeps taking control if the area becomes empty again).

If I leave an area empty before starting a fight, I have to decide whether or not to take control of the empty area before the fight begins.

A Power token on the game board only goes back to the Power Pool when an opponent takes control of the area. If I go into an area that only has an opponent’s Power token (with no enemy units), there won’t be a fight, and the Power token will simply be thrown away to the Power Pool.

Power tokens don’t help me defend in a fight, and they don’t count as “Power icons” that are printed on the game board (for things like Consolidate Power tokens or the “Game of Thrones” Westeros card).

Hey there! Did you know that in this game, you can only have one Power token in an area at a time? That’s right! If you don’t have any Power left, sorry, but you won’t be able to take control of that area.

But hold on, there’s something important I need to tell you. You can only establish control when you’re moving your troops out of an area with a March Order. It’s not enough for the area to just be empty because of something like a Wildling victory. Nope, you can’t sneak in and grab control once all your units are gone.

Controlling Home Areas

Hey there! Let’s talk about controlling home areas in the game. Each House has its own home area, which you can find marked by its House shield right on the game board. From the very start of the game, a House is considered to have control of its home area. It’s like having a Power token that can’t be taken away.

Now, here’s how you can take control of enemy home areas. There are two ways to do it: either by keeping your friendly units in those areas or by establishing control over the enemy’s home area. When you successfully establish control over an enemy home area, you place your friendly Power token right on top of the enemy House shield. It’s a way of saying, “I’m in charge now!”

But there’s a catch. If you decide not to or simply can’t leave a Power token behind when you leave an enemy home area, control of that area goes right back to its original House. You’ll have to leave a piece of yourself behind to maintain control.

Oh, and one more thing to remember: when you’re retreating your army, you can’t retreat into an area that has an enemy Power token. It’s a big no-no.
