On the Racetrack, there are certain spaces called Challenges. These spaces have special effects that can happen when you meet certain conditions. There are tiles that represent these Challenges and they are placed on the board at the beginning of the game. Here are some rules that apply to Challenges, unless a specific Challenge says otherwise:

– If a Challenge asks you to get rid of something, but you don’t have what you need, you can’t get the special effects.

– When you move your Inventor Pawn several spaces, you can’t stop at Challenge spaces to do them one by one. The only exceptions to this are Glaciers and Crowds. They are automatically activated as soon as your Inventor Pawn enters that space.

Here is a list of Challenge spaces:

– Power-station

– Newcomen Atmospheric Engine

– Coal Mine

If your Inventor Pawn is sitting on one of these spots at any point during a turn, you can use a Cog to activate the Gain a Die () Race Ability.

You can use this ability multiple times while your Inventor Pawn is on this spot, as long as you have enough Cogs.

Rails

If your Inventor Pawn is on any of these spaces during a round, you can get rid of a die from your Dice Pool that matches the type indicated to immediately gain Motion equal to the number of icons shown (some spaces on the Racetrack with Rails produce Smooth Motion, which ignores Terrain)

Steam Pony

If I have my Inventor Pawn on one of these spaces during a round, I can get some Cogs by discarding a die of the specified type from my Dice Pool. It’s a cool way to gain extra resources! Just remember, I can only do this Challenge once per game.

Glaciers

Glaciers are unique kinds of terrain. When you step onto a glacier tile with your inventor pawn, you have the option to get rid of a specific type of die from your dice pool. By doing this, you can completely ignore any terrain obstacles on that tile. This ability is known as a “Jump.”

If you reach a space with a icon at the end of the Race Phase, it means you didn’t make it across the Jump. So, you’ll have to move your Inventor Pawn back towards the Starting Line until you find a space without a icon.

Crowds

When I send my Inventor Pawn into one of these spaces by moving forward, I immediately get 5 Cogs, but I lose 1 for each incomplete valve connection in my Invention. It’s kind of like a reward, but also a punishment at the same time.

Even if I have a half-valve that’s next to another card, it still counts as incomplete. So if I have 5 or more incomplete valves, I just have to keep going, even if the crowd is teasing me. This rule doesn’t apply if I enter the space while moving backward.

In the example I mentioned earlier, Ferdinand von Zeppelin doesn’t get any Cogs from the crowd because he has 5 incomplete valve connections. That must have been disappointing for him.
