Activated Ability: An activated ability is when you have to choose to use it or pay a cost. It’s like making a decision or doing something specific in order to get a result. For example, if an ability says “destroy this room,” you have to decide to activate it. Ongoing abilities and abilities that trigger when you build a room are not activated abilities. They happen automatically or in response to something else. Build: When an ability says “When you build this room,” it means that it only triggers when you actually build the room, not when it is revealed for other reasons. So if a room is destroyed and the one above it is revealed, the “when you build this room” ability won’t trigger because it wasn’t actually built. Deactivate: When a room is “deactivated,” it means that it is turned sideways until the end of the turn. While a room is deactivated, you ignore any damage, treasure, or abilities that would normally affect it. It’s like putting the room on pause. Effects that count the number of rooms in your dungeon also don’t count a deactivated room. It’s like it’s not even there for those effects.
Imagine this: you’re deep in a dungeon, and you stumble upon a mysterious blank space. It’s like a break from the chaos, where cards on either side are kept apart. But beware! This space is only temporary, and it disappears at the end of the turn. You can’t build any rooms over these blank spaces.
Now, let’s talk about the inevitable – death. Heroes can meet their demise in a few ways, like taking damage or falling victim to powerful Spells. If a Hero reaches a fearsome Boss, they’re considered “dead.” Their fate is sealed, and they end up either face-up as a Wound or face-down as a Soul in the scorekeeping area.
When it comes to destruction, a room can be “destroyed” and sent to the discard pile. But don’t worry, the room underneath it is revealed, not destroyed!
Another term we should cover is “discard.” Normally, when a player is forced to discard a card, they get to choose which card to let go of. However, if a card says to “discard a card at random,” well, you don’t get to make that choice. It’s out of your hands!
Welcome to the entrance of your dungeon! This is the area to the left of your leftmost room. It’s where all the action begins. When the adventure phase starts, heroes enter the dungeon in the order they arrived.
Let’s talk about face-down cards. They are played face-down to keep the information hidden. During the build phase, rooms are placed face-down and then revealed during the bait phase. It adds a sense of mystery and surprise to the game.
Remember, you can’t build additional rooms over face-down cards. So make sure to plan your dungeon layout accordingly.
Now, let’s talk about the fool. The fool is a special hero card. It’s still considered an “Ordinary Hero,” but it has an interesting twist. The fool is drawn to the character with the fewest souls. Keep an eye out for the fool, as it can turn the tide of the game.
Healing is an important ability. If you have a way to heal, you will be able to flip over a face-up hero in your scorekeeping area. Instead of considering its wound value, you now count its soul value. Healing can be a game-changer, so use it wisely.
Kill: When a Hero’s Health reaches zero in a specific room, certain effects may be triggered. The room where the Hero loses all their Health is considered the room where they are killed. (You can also refer to “Dead” above).
XP: The XP (“experience point”) value of a Boss card determines the player who will take the first turn in the game. If there is ever a situation where it’s unclear who has priority, the player with the Boss card with the highest XP value will have priority.
