FOURSQUARE
Hey there! Have you heard of Foursquare? It’s a really cool game that uses a special deck of cards. I bet you’ll love it! Foursquare was created by Wil Su and it was inspired by a few other games like Poker Squares, Reversi, and Lights Out. You see, in this game, your goal is to build a 4×4 grid of cards where all of the cards are face up. Sounds challenging, right? Well, it is! If you make a wrong move, too many cards will end up face down and you’ll lose the game.
Now, Wil designed Foursquare to have a light and fun theme. But if you’re into more thematic elements and solitaire games, you should totally check out the collection here. It’s really awesome!
THE CARDS & THE DEAL
So, let’s talk about the cards and how the game starts. First, you need a standard 52 card deck, but you’ll have to remove all the face cards. You won’t be using those. After removing the face cards, you’ll be left with 40 cards. These cards are ranked from low (Ace) to high (10). Once you’ve got your deck ready, give it a good shuffle and hold it face down in one hand. This face-down deck is what we call the stock.
THE PLAY
Welcome to the Exciting Game of Card Grid!
Let’s dive into the thrilling world of Card Grid! Are you ready? Grab a deck of cards and get ready to have a blast.
Placing Cards
Okay, let’s kick things off by drawing the top card from the stock. Place it face up anywhere on the table to start building your grid. Simple, right?
Now, here’s a neat trick. Whenever you draw a card, you can either place it next to a card you’ve already played or stack it on top of another card. Just remember, you can only have four cards in a pile and your grid can be no bigger than four rows and four columns. Keep those limits in mind!
Flipping Cards
Now, things get really interesting. After you place a card on the grid, get ready to flip some cards. If the card you played is the highest or the lowest in its row, it’s time to turn things over. Flip the top card of every pile in that row, my friend!
But wait, there’s more! If the row is filled with face-down cards, no worries. The flipping rule automatically applies, and all of the top cards turn face up. It’s like magic!
One more thing to remember. If there are other cards in the row of the same rank as the one you played, they don’t count. The card you just played isn’t considered higher or lower than those cards. So, no flipping for them!
Now that you know the basics of Card Grid, it’s time to start playing and have a flipping great time. Enjoy!
Now, let’s take a look at the column where the card is placed. Is it the highest or lowest ranked card? If it is, we need to flip over all of the cards in that column.
We will continue playing as I described until we either win or lose the game.
LOSING THE GAME
If there are more than four cards still facing down in the grid after I play a card, we will have lost the game. We will also lose if we run out of cards in the stock.
WINNING
If I have 16 cards facing up at the end of my turn, we will have won the game. The score will be determined by the remaining cards in the stock.
