The Resistance Game Rules

Welcome to the exciting world of The Resistance, where the fate of nations hangs in the balance! In this game, you and your friends will dive into the murky world of spies, deception, and high-stakes missions. Are you ready for the challenge? Let’s dive in and learn the rules!

First, let’s talk about the game setup. The Resistance is all about a group of resistance fighters who are trying to overthrow an oppressive government. Sounds thrilling, right? Well, it is! The game is played with 5 to 10 players, and each player is assigned a secret role – either a brave resistance member or a cunning spy. The goal of the resistance members is to complete missions successfully, while the spies try to sabotage their efforts. It’s a battle of wits and strategy!

Once everyone knows their role, the leader of the resistance – that could be you, by the way – will select a team to go on a mission. This is a crucial moment, as it determines the fate of the resistance. The leader will choose a certain number of players to join the mission, and then everyone will vote on whether or not to approve the team. This vote is the first test of trust and loyalty. If the team is approved, they embark on the mission. If not, a new leader is chosen, and the selection process starts all over again. Thrilling, right?

Once a team is approved, the mission begins. Each player on the team will secretly decide whether to support the mission or sabotage it. The resistance members want to succeed, while the spies want to fail. After everyone has made their decision, the votes are revealed. It’s a tense moment as you find out who’s on your side and who’s working against you. If the mission is successful, the resistance gains a point. If it fails, the spies gain a point. The game continues with new leaders and new missions until one team gains three points.

Here’s a pro tip for you: communication is key. As a resistance member, you must trust your instincts and work with your team to figure out who the spies are. On the other hand, if you’re a spy, you need to deceive the resistance members and sabotage their missions. The key is to blend in and not raise suspicion. It’s a delicate dance, full of suspense and excitement.

So, there you have it – the basic rules of The Resistance. It’s a game of strategy, deception, and teamwork. Can you uncover the spies and lead the resistance to victory? The fate of nations is in your hands. Good luck!

Resistance member

Welcome to The Resistance, a thrilling social deduction game where you’ll dive into a world of secret identities and high-stakes missions. In this game, you’ll either join the resistance, fighting to overthrow a corrupt government, or become a spy, determined to foil the resistance’s plans.

The goal of the resistance is clear: successfully complete three missions and bring down the oppressive regime. But be warned, the spies are lurking, ready to sabotage your every move. If they manage to fail three missions, victory will be theirs.

However, the spies have another path to triumph. If the resistance struggles to assemble a mission team due to failed votes, the spies will seize the opportunity and claim victory for themselves.

Spy

When we play the game of Spy, there’s one golden rule we follow: say anything you want, whenever you want. The best part is, you can say it out loud for everyone to hear. It’s all about open communication, mind games, and figuring out the truth.

The Cards

Character Cards – These cards hold the key to each player’s identity. It’s like a secret mission; you could be a loyal resistance operative or a cunning spy. But here’s the trick: you can’t reveal your card to anyone, and no one can discuss the artwork on the card. It’s all about secrecy and suspense.

Welcome to the Leader Card!

Leader Card is the name we give to the players who will make up the Mission Team.

Team Cards are what we use to assign positions on the Mission Team.

Vote Cards help us approve or reject the Leader’s Mission Team.

Mission Cards are the ones that determine whether the Mission succeeds or fails.

Plot Cards are extra actions we can take when using “The Plot Thickens” expansion.

The Game Setup

To start the game, put the tableau in the middle of the play area. Keep the Score Markers, Team cards, and Mission cards close to the Tableau. Put the Round marker on the 1st Mission space on the Tableau.

Give each player a set of two Vote cards.

Next, we need to randomly select a Leader. The Leader will be given the Leader card. You can use the chart below to see how many Resistance Operatives and Spies will be in the game.

Players 5 6 7 8 9 10
Resistance 3 4 4 5 6 6
Spies 2 2 3 3 3 4

Hey there! Let’s get started with the game. Shuffle the character cards, making sure you have the right number of cards for the number of players. Deal one card to each player face down. Take a peek at your card without letting anyone else see.

Time for the Spies to Reveal

Now that we all know our roles, it’s time for the Spies to make themselves known. If you’re a Spy, listen up! This is what you’ll do:

  1. Everyone, close your eyes.
  2. Spies, open your eyes and look around. Make sure you know who the other spies are.
  3. Spies, close your eyes. Everyone’s eyes should be closed now.
  4. Everyone, open your eyes!

Ready to Play? Let’s Get Started!

Welcome to the game! Let me explain how it works. We have different Rounds in this game, and each Round has two parts: the Team building phase and the Mission phase.

Build the Team

In the team building phase, the Leader gets to choose the players they want on the Mission Team. After that, all players get to vote on whether they approve or reject the Mission Team.

Mission Team Assignment: Once everyone has had a chance to discuss, the Leader takes out the required number of team cards (you can find the numbers in the chart below) and gives each card to a player, including themselves. Just remember, each player can only have one team card.

I don’t know about you but I’m
tired of the same old thing when
it comes to choosing the right thing
to do or the right thing to
buy. It can be overwhelming.

I’m

here to tell you that you don’t
have to go it alone. There are
ways to make the decision-making process
smoother and more enjoyable.

How

about we try something different?

Instead

of getting caught up in the complexity
of the situation, let’s break it down
into smaller chunks.

Here’s

a simplified way to look at it:

We

have a table with different teams and
their corresponding numbers.

This

table can help us visualize the options
and compare them.

It’s

simple yet effective.

Now

it’s time to make your choice.

Don’t

overthink it. Trust your instincts and
go with what feels right.

Remember,

there is no “right” or “wrong” choice.

There

is only what works for you. So
trust yourself and move forward.

Vote Approved

It’s time to vote on the team assignments after discussing them. Now, each of us, including me as the leader, will secretly choose a vote card.

Once everyone has made their choice, I will ask everyone to reveal their votes. If the majority of us voted in favor of the assignments, the mission team will be approved. However, if the majority rejected the assignments or there is a tie, the mission team will be rejected.

If the mission team is approved, we can move on to the mission phase. But, if the team is rejected, the leadership will pass clockwise, and we will have to go through the team building phase again.

Watch out! If five mission teams are rejected in a single round, the spies win the game!

Time to Complete the Mission

Mission Success

Hey there! You and your team are on a mission, but there’s a twist – you have to make a secret decision. Will you support the mission or sabotage it? The leader will give each team member a set of mission cards. You’ll choose one and play it face down in front of you. Exciting, right?

Now, here’s the deal. The mission will only succeed if all the cards revealed are mission success cards. But, if even one mission fail card is played, well, the mission is a failure. Quite the cliffhanger, wouldn’t you say?

Remember, the Resistance operatives, like yourself, must choose the mission success card. As for the spies, they have a choice – they can go with either the mission success or mission fail card. Very sneaky, indeed!

Oh, and before I forget, something interesting happens on the fourth mission when there are seven or more players involved. In that case, the mission fails if there are at least two mission fail cards played. Talk about adding extra suspense to the mix!

When playing the game, it’s important to have two players shuffle the mission cards that have been played and discarded before showing them to everyone.

Once a mission is finished, move the round marker to the next mission space on the game board. Use a blue marker to show a successful mission or a red marker to indicate a failed mission in that space. The leader passes the responsibility to the next player in a clockwise direction, and then the team building phase for the next round starts.

The end of the game

In this game, the end comes quickly. It’s a battle between success and failure, with each side vying for three victories. If the Resistance can secure three missions, they emerge victorious. But if the spies can sabotage three missions, they claim the ultimate prize.

It may seem like a straightforward game, but there’s more than meets the eye in The Resistance. Clues can be found in various places, from players’ voting patterns to the outcome of each mission. But it’s the subtle cues of interaction that offer the most insight. To rid the Resistance of spies, operatives must utilize every ounce of available information.

Overthrowing a powerful government is no small feat. With the core game rules, it’s likely that the spies will prevail, especially with a larger group of over seven players. However, with “The Plot Thickens” expansion, new plot cards inject additional knowledge for the Resistance and more opportunities for the spies to deceive.
