Let’s start by removing 30 cards with the Expert Rules icon () from the set of 110 cards. Then, we’ll shuffle the remaining 80 cards and put the deck in the middle of the table so that everyone can reach it.
What’s the goal of the game?
The main objective is to collect cards and score as many points as possible.
How do we play?
Here’s the sequence of gameplay:

To begin, I draft my first version, which is essentially like having a hand of cards.
After that, I move on to stage two, where I play the cards I have in hand to start creating the second draft.
Then, it’s time for the third draft. I play the cards in my hand, making adjustments and improvements along the way.
Stage four is all about refining the work further. I play the cards in my hand again and make any necessary changes.
Next, I move on to stage five, where I calculate the points and evaluate the overall quality of the drafted piece.
The Process of Drafting
When I’m in the drafting phase, I follow these steps:

- Okay, let’s start by dealing five cards to each player. Make sure to keep them face down from the draw pile.
- When I give the signal, it’s time to pick up your cards and choose one.
- Once you’ve made your choice, place the card face down in front of you.
- Pass the remaining cards in your hand to the player next to you. Remember, for Stages 1 and 5, pass to your left, and for Stages 3 and 7, pass to your right.
- We’ll repeat these steps until nobody has any cards left in hand. Feel free to look at the cards you’ve chosen whenever you want!
Let’s Play Your Cards!
After finishing the first draft, you’ll find yourself facing five cards. From these, you can choose to play three, one card at a time.
Here’s how you play your cards:
- Pick a card from your hand and lay it face down on the table.
- Once everyone has placed their chosen cards face down, we all reveal them by turning them face up.
- Take a look at the face-up cards and apply any effects they may have. We’ll explain the effects in Applying Effects.
Now repeat steps 1 through 3 three times. At the end, you should have three used cards in front of you and two unused cards still in your hand. Put the two unused cards face down in the discard pile. Remember, you can’t peek at the discard pile!
When you finish using the cards in your hand, you’ll want to have three more cards in front of you. By the time you reach Stage 2, you’ll have 3 cards on the table. At Stage 4, you’ll have 6 cards. And at Stage 6 and Stage 8, you’ll have 9 and 12 cards, respectively, in front of you.
Using Card Effects
Some cards will trigger special effects the first time you turn them face up. In the Basic Rules, these effects are applied in the order UnflipFlip.

- Let’s talk about who gets affected when certain cards are played. It’s important to understand that the effects can target you, the person who played the card, or it can affect all players.
- Now, let’s look at what these effects actually do. There are two types: unflip and flip. Unflip allows you to turn a face-down card face up, while flip lets you turn a face-up card face down.
- Next, we have to consider how many cards are affected by these effects. Depending on the card, you may be able to unflip or flip multiple cards.
- Finally, we need to think about which cards are affected by unflip or flip. Some cards specifically target certain factions, while others affect all factions. It’s important to note that cards targeting specific factions are applied before those targeting non-specific factions.
Here’s an example to help illustrate this. Let’s say you played a card that requires you to flip one of your face-up Dragonvale cards face down. In this case, you would be the one affected by the card’s effect.
It’s also worth mentioning that unflip and flip effects apply to the card that generates the effect as well.

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of Dragonvale cards! Imagine you’re playing a game with Player A, and they decide to use a Dragon’s Lair card. This card has a special effect – you get to flip one Dragonvale card. Exciting, right? But here’s the catch: there’s already a Sky-Dance Dragon card face up in front of Player A. Both Dragon’s Lair and Sky-Dance Dragon are Dragonvale cards, so Player A has to make a choice. Which one will they flip face down?
Now, let’s say there are multiple Unflip and Flip effects happening at the same time. In that case, we need to apply as many of them as possible. But here’s the order: first, we do all the Unflip effects, and then we move on to the Flip effects. It’s important to keep in mind that effects that target specific factions take precedence over those that target non-specific factions. So, be strategic!
But what if you don’t have any cards in the category that’s affected by an effect? Well, you’re in luck! You can completely ignore that effect. After all, it’s no fun being affected by something that doesn’t even apply to you, right?
Now, here’s a little secret: you can peek at any of the face-down cards in front of you whenever you want. It’s like having a sneak peek into your own treasure trove. But please, be respectful and don’t try to peek at the face-down cards of other players. Everyone deserves their own little mystery.
The adventure comes to an end
Once I’ve completed the 4th draft and played all my cards, it’s time to tally up the points. This is done in Stage 9 of the game.
In this stage, I need to add together the points from all the cards I have face up in front of me. If I have any cards that have variable values, I need to count the number of designated cards that I have.

So, at the end of the game, if you’ve got yourself 4 Homesteaders cards on the table, each of those cards will get you 4 points. That means that in total, you will score 16 points from your Homesteaders cards.

So, here’s the deal, folks. You know those cards that have the Friends icon? Yeah, the ones with the little picture on the left. Well, those are the ones I want to talk about today.
Now, these cards are pretty special because they work together with another card. See, if a card has the Friends icon, it means it’s meant to be used with a specific card that has its name written on it.
Think of it like a team, or a duo, if you will. One card can’t do its thing without the other. They’re like two peas in a pod, always together.
So, the next time you come across a card with the Friends icon, pay attention to its partner card. They were made for each other, like peanut butter and jelly.
