The Solo Experience: Unleash Your Inner Hero
Are you ready to face the challenges of Dragonwood alone? Then let’s dive in and discover the exciting world of solo play.
When it comes to playing solo, there are a few key rules that you need to keep in mind to ensure an optimal gaming experience:
- Setup: Prepare the game by shuffling the cards and setting up the adventure stack. Place the various decks and dice within easy reach. Remember, in solo play, you’ll be playing against the game itself, so make sure everything is in order before you begin your quest.
- Turn Structure: Each turn is divided into three phases – the Monster Phase, the Feat Phase, and the Regroup Phase. During the Monster Phase, you’ll encounter fearsome creatures and battle them using your cards and dice. In the Feat Phase, you’ll have the opportunity to use your special abilities and perform heroic feats. Finally, in the Regroup Phase, you’ll have the chance to replenish your hand and prepare for the next round of challenges.
- Monster Encounters: Dragonwood is teeming with creatures of all shapes and sizes. When it’s time to face a monster, draw cards from the adventure stack until you reveal a creature card. Then, unleash your courage and defeat the monster using your cards and dice. Be careful though, as some creatures are more formidable than others and may require more skill and strategy to defeat.
- Collecting Artifacts: As you venture deeper into Dragonwood, you’ll come across powerful artifacts that can aid you in your quest. When you defeat a creature, you have the chance to claim its artifact as a trophy. These artifacts will grant you special abilities and bonuses, making you an even greater hero.
- Managing Health and Energy: Your health and energy are vital resources that you must carefully manage during your adventure. Health represents your physical condition, while energy represents your magical prowess. Use your health and energy wisely to overcome challenges and emerge victorious.

If you’re looking for a fun way to play Dragonwood with a friend, the 2-player variant against an automated opponent is a great option. Don’t worry, all the rules are the same, with just a few minor changes.
Setting Up
First, you need to remove 12 cards from the Dragonwood deck, just like in a regular 2-player game. Remember to put the 2 Dragons in the bottom half of the deck.
Next, set up the landscape by putting 5 cards as usual, with the deck to the right. Deal 5 cards to yourself, but your opponent won’t have any cards. You’ll take the first turn.
Playing the Game
On your turn, start by drawing one card. Then, proceed with your turn as usual, which means you’ll either draw 2 cards or draw 1 card and try to capture on each turn.
If you manage to capture something, the landscape will shift to the left, and a new card will replace it on the right.
Note: Keep in mind that for the Wind Storm event card, you need to discard 1 card and then draw 1 card.

When it’s the automated opponent’s turn, they roll 1 die. If they roll a 1 or 2, their turn is over and nothing happens. But if they roll a 3, they capture the leftmost card on the landscape. It could be a creature or an enhancement, even a dragon! The other 4 cards move to the left, and a new card is placed on the right.
Now, there’s something important to note. If the opponent captures an enhancement, it won’t affect future capture attempts. Enhancements are like one-time boosts, and once they’re captured, they’re gone.
If the opponent rolls a 4, things get interesting. They try to capture the highest-point creature on the landscape. However, there are two exceptions to this rule. First, if there’s a Cloak of Darkness on the landscape and no creatures worth 5 or more points, the opponent will snatch that Cloak instead.
- Second, if there’s no Cloak of Darkness and no creatures worth 5 or more points, the opponent won’t capture anything. They’ll just end their turn.
All these rules make the opponent’s turn a bit unpredictable. It keeps you on your toes, wondering what they might do next. It’s an exciting and challenging part of the game that adds an element of surprise!
If the highest card is a Dragon and it’s not on the left side, I’ll roll the die again. If the result is 3 or 4, I’ve captured the Dragon. If not, my opponent will capture the next highest creature, unless there are only enhancements left, in which case my opponent will capture the leftmost enhancement.
Note: If there’s a tie for the highest points, my opponent will capture the leftmost creature of the highest value.
Game Over

Let’s keep playing until we defeat both Dragons.
We calculate scores just like before, but now your opponent will gain 2 points for each enhancement they capture (but those don’t count towards the 3-point bonus for having the most creatures).
