The Detective Club Game: Rules to Uncover the Truth

Objective:
I wanted to share the rules and guidelines that make the Detective Club game so much fun. When you play, the goal is to uncover the truth behind a mysterious scene. Getting Started:
Are you ready to put your detective hat on? Fantastic! Each player will receive a hand of cards, and these cards contain secret words. Don’t show your cards to anyone – the secrecy is part of the excitement. Remember, your goal is to convince others that you know the truth while uncovering the liars.
The Gameplay:
Here’s how the gameplay works: one player will be selected as the “Scene Master” for the round. The Scene Master will pick a secret word or phrase from one of their cards and create a scene description related to it. They’ll provide subtle hints, but they can’t reveal the secret word or phrase. It’s a delicate dance of mystery and deduction!
After the scene is described, each player (including the Scene Master) will choose a card from their hand that best matches the scene. This card will act as their clue. But watch out, because there’s a twist – one player will receive a blank card instead of a clue. They become the “Conspirator.”
The cards will then be shuffled and revealed to everyone. Now it’s time to analyze the clues! Each player, except for the Conspirator, will explain why their chosen card relates to the scene. It’s up to the other players to listen closely and decide who might be the Conspirator, trying to throw them off the scent.
After all the players have presented their reasoning, it’s time for the final phase. Each player, including the Conspirator, will vote for who they think the Conspirator is. If the majority correctly identifies the Conspirator, the detectives win. But if the Conspirator remains hidden, they come out on top. Oh, the suspense!
Strategy Tips:
If you want to become a detective pro, I have a few tips for you. First, pay close attention to the scene description and try to find subtle connections to your card. Second, when explaining your clue, be confident and convincing. Don’t give away your secrets too easily! And finally, don’t forget to listen carefully to others. Detectives need sharp ears as well as keen eyes.

Components
- I’ve got these cool Evidence Cards, all 168 of them.
- There are also 58 Victory Points Tokens up for grabs.
- We’ve got 8 Voting Tokens to cast our votes.
- You’ll need one of the 8 Player Markers to keep track of your progress.
- And don’t forget the 7 Notebooks for jotting down important clues.
- Oh, and the pencil! Because the one with the pencil gets to be the Active Player.
Setup
- Make sure the VP Tokens and the Evidence Cards deck are easily reachable for everyone.
- Take your favorite Player Marker and attach a Voting Token of the same color to it.
- Let’s decide who goes first by random chance. The lucky person becomes the Active Player and gets the pen (aka the Active Player Marker). They also get a notebook for each of the other players in the game.
- Now, grab 6 Evidence Cards each. It’s time to crack this case!

Let’s Play!
Playing Detective Club is all about solving mysteries and having fun! The game is played in multiple rounds. In each round, each player gets a chance to be the Active Player. The game ends after each player has had a turn as the Active Player.
Alright, here’s what you need to do:
1. Pick a Word
Look at your cards and choose a word. Keep in mind that you’ll need two cards to describe this word.
Place one card face up on the table to represent your chosen word. Then, draw a new card from the deck.
Remember: Whenever you play an Evidence Card, immediately draw a new card to replace it. Make sure you always have 6 Evidence Cards in your hand.
Let’s say my name is Mike, and I’m the Active Player. I really enjoy playing this game called “Nature”. So, I decide to place a card with a beautiful red rose on it, because it perfectly represents the word “nature”.
2. Let’s Choose Our Roles
Now, it’s time to assign roles. As the Active Player, I get to write the word “nature” on all the notebooks, except for one. After that, I mix up all the notebooks and give one to each player.
Here’s the twist: one unlucky player will get an empty notebook, and they will become the Conspirator. The rest of the players are Detectives. The Detectives have to work together to figure out who the Conspirator is, while the Conspirator secretly teams up with me to throw the Detectives off track.
Remember: You must always keep your notebook a secret! No one knows who the Conspirator is, except for you.
3. Let’s Play Some Cards!
So here’s how it works. We’re going to take turns playing cards, starting with the player sitting on the left of the Active Player. And we’ll keep going in a nice, clockwise direction. It’s important to pick a card from your hand that matches the word the Active Player wrote down.

Okay, here’s the deal: I’m the Conspirator, and let me tell you, my notebook is looking pretty empty right now. So, I’m trying to break it down and figure out what the heck these two cards mean. They both have water on them, so maybe the word I should go for is “water,” right? I think I’ll choose the card with the big blue wave on it.
Now, it’s not just me playing here. All the players get a turn to play a card. So, after I play my card, the next person goes, and then the next, until everyone has played two cards.
Imagine this: Mike and Bill, my two friends, have just added another card to the table. I’m trying to guess what the word is. I thought it might be “water,” but now I’m not so sure. Maybe it’s something like “nature”? I decide to go with the sunflower card and hope for the best.
While I’m trying to figure out the word, everyone else is also playing their cards. They’re placing them in front of themselves.
- If you’re playing as a Detective, it’s important to play strong Evidence cards. That way, you won’t get accused during the Voting Phase!
- If you’re the Conspirator, pay attention to the cards played by the other players. They might give you some useful information.
4. Let’s Talk & Vote
Once everyone has played their two cards, the person who started the round says the word they wrote down. Then, they explain why they chose the two cards that represent that word.
Now it’s time for everyone else to make their choices. But remember, I don’t get to play this part. I just get to watch and listen.
We’ll start with the player to my left, and go around in a circle. Each player will place their Voting Token next to the Player Marker of the person they think is the Conspirator. They can’t pick themselves, though.
Let me give you an example. Bill and Dustin think Jane is the Conspirator because she couldn’t explain her cards well. Bill puts his Voting Token next to Jane’s Player Marker. In return, Jane votes against Bill, hoping that Dustin will make a wrong choice.
Now It’s Time to Score
Once everyone has voted, we’ll reveal the notebooks and tally up the scores.
- If a Detective picked the right person and placed their Voting Token on the Conspirator’s Player Marker, they score 3 VP.
- If there is either zero or one Token on the Conspirator’s Player Marker, then you and the Conspirator each score 5 VP.
- If there are two or more Tokens on the Conspirator’s Player Marker, then neither you nor the Conspirator score any VP.

Example: Bill and Dustin were correct and each score 3 VP. Jane and Mike do not score any VP for this round.
Keep your VP Tokens face down. After the Scoring Phase is complete, a new round begins: you pass your marker to the player on your left.
That player becomes the new Active Player and takes the notebooks. Remember to cross out the previous word in all notebooks to avoid confusion!
End of the Game
Once every player has had a turn as the Active Player (when there are 6-8 players), or twice (when there are fewer than 6 players), the game comes to an end. Now it’s time to reveal our VP Tokens and tally up our final scores.
The player who has managed to accumulate the most VP Tokens emerges as the ultimate victor.
In the event of a tie, the player who has the highest number of victory point tokens claims the victory. If the tie persists, all tied players share the glory.
Game Variants
Thematic Game
When we play the game, we start by picking a topic. When it’s my turn, I have to choose a word that fits the topic we chose at the beginning of the game.
The topics can be really specific, like “Space Opera” or “USA”, or more general, like “Movies”, “Countries”, or “Literature”. It all depends on how hard you want the game to be.
It’s important that everyone agrees on the topic we choose. If you want, we can even change the topic after a few rounds, or we can stick with the same topic for the whole game!
No Talking Allowed
To make the game more challenging, we can skip the talking step in the game. Instead of the active player saying the word out loud and players explaining their cards, we just move straight to voting after each player has played two cards.
