Goal of the Game

In this game, the objective is to have the most money when all the gold is gone!

Preparing to Play

Start by shuffling the red newspaper cards and placing them on the game board in the spot labeled Calamityville News, with the newspaper side facing up. Next, shuffle the yellow newspapers and stack them on top of the red ones, also with the newspaper side up.

Each player chooses a marker to represent their character and sets it at the train station. Finally, one player is selected to be the banker.

When you begin playing, you’ll be given $2000 to start with. That’s three $500 bills and five $100 bills.

The next step is to shuffle the five gold nuggets and place them face down in the river. Be careful not to look at the words on the nuggets! Then, you’ll need to place the Wild Donkey in the center of the corral on the board.

Game Play

When it’s time to play the game, we all begin at the train station. We take turns going around the board in a clockwise direction.

When it’s my turn, I roll both dice. If I roll a newspaper card, I read it out loud and do what it says. Then I move my game piece the number of spaces shown on the regular die.

If I don’t roll a newspaper card, I just move my game piece the number of spaces shown on the regular die.

After I read a newspaper card, I throw it away and don’t use it again.

Here, I rolled a newspaper card. So I read it, did what it said, and then moved my game piece six spaces clockwise.

In this example, I didn’t roll a newspaper card. I just moved my game piece four spaces clockwise.

Newspaper Cards

If you land on a Newspaper card space, you’ll need to read the newspaper card out loud and follow the instructions. After that, you can discard the newspaper card.

When the town is booming, there are 29 yellow newspaper cards. But when the town is about to go bust, there are only 20 red cards.

• Note: If a newspaper card tells you to pay something other than another player (like the train station safe), you should give the money directly to the bank.
• Hint: Be careful about making purchases once the red cards start, because property values become zero when the “Gold Has Run Out!” card is read.
• Special Instance: If a newspaper card tells you to pass a property to another player, and that player already has five properties, pass it to the next player who has less than five properties.

Purchasing Property

When you want to buy property in the game, you need to land on a vacant space on the gameboard. It’s really exciting because you get to choose from all the available properties and buy one for just $200!

Once you decide on a property, you can place your building on the vacant space and it becomes yours. Cool, right? The bank will give you the deed right away, proving that you own it.

Now here’s something interesting. If you manage to buy all three properties of the same type, like a bank, store, or hotel, you’ll get bonus rent. That means you’ll earn even more money! But remember, you can’t own more than five properties at once, including mines. It’s important to keep that in mind.

The Concept of Rent

When you find yourself landing on a property owned by another player in the game, you’ll have to pay them rent. The amount of rent you owe is determined by multiplying the value of the space on the board by the number of similar properties in the owner’s possession.

Let’s talk about rent: If you’re the owner of three banks, each costing $300, every time another player lands on one of your banks, they owe you $900 in rent. But if you only have one bank that costs $100, the rent payment is much lower at $100.

Now, let’s explore mines:

Did you know that mines work differently from regular properties? They have their own set of rules and can generate money in unique ways.

When you want to buy a mine, all you have to do is land on an empty mine space and purchase it for $200. Once you’ve done that, pick one of the five gold nuggets floating in the river. Turn it over and place it face up next to your mine on the gameboard. This way, all players will be able to see what’s written on it.

If the nugget is “Real Gold,” you’re in luck! You immediately receive $500 from the bank, and every time you land on your own mine, you get another $500. It’s like hitting the jackpot!

On the other hand, if the nugget turns out to be “Fool’s Gold,” things are not so great. You don’t get any money, and your mine becomes worthless. However, other players can visit your mine for free, which might not be ideal for you. Even though the mine doesn’t generate any income, it still counts as one of your properties.

Another important thing to note is that mines don’t generate double rent like regular properties. No matter how many mines you own, the rent is always fixed at $500. So, if someone lands on your mine with “Real Gold,” they have to pay you $500 in rent.

When you visit the saloon, the owner will collect rent from you. However, the amount of rent you have to pay depends on your luck. It’s like a game of chance!

Once you land on the Saloon, you need to roll the numeric die. This will determine how much money you lose to the owner for gambling. The calculation is simple: you multiply the number you roll on the die by $100. The result is the amount of rent you owe.

For example, let’s say you roll a 5 on the die. So, you would owe the owner 5 x 100 = $500 in rent.

Train Station

When you land on the train station, you get a chance to roll the die and potentially find some money in the conductor’s safe. The amount of money you find is determined by multiplying $100 with the number you roll on the die. Just passing by the train station won’t give you any money; you need to actually land on it to collect your riches.

A Surprise Visitor

During the game, you might come across a newspaper card that releases the donkey. These cards will tell you something like “Donkey goes Wild!” When that happens, you can aim the donkey at any player’s property, but not at any mines.

When aiming the donkey, make sure to keep him in the corral and kick his legs. But be careful not to knock down more than one property at a time.

If you accidentally knock down two buildings, you’ll have to stand the one that wasn’t your target back up. So be sure to aim carefully! If you miss, you’ll have to leave the building untouched.

Once a building is destroyed, its deed goes back to the bank, and the property can be bought again just like any other property.

Remember, once a building is destroyed, it has to stay in the same space for the rest of the game. You can’t move it to another space. But you can buy it again and rebuild it on the same spot.
