Objective

Setup

Before we jump into the gameplay, let’s set up the game. Shuffle the deck of cake cards and deal five cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face-down in a draw pile. You’re now ready to dig into the sugary action!

Gameplay

On your turn, you have two options:

Draw a Card: You can draw the top card from the draw pile into your hand. This will give you more options for your next turn.
Play a Card: You can play a cake card from your hand onto the table. To play a card, it must either match the color of the previously played cake or be a wild card, which can be placed on any color. After playing a card, you must draw a card to replace it.

The gameplay continues in a clockwise direction, with each player taking turns.

Wild Cards

Wild cards are special cards that can be used strategically to your advantage. There are a few different types of wild cards:

Color Change: This wild card allows you to change the color of the cake pile, enabling you to play a different color card on your turn.
Reverse: The reverse card changes the direction of play, reversing the order in which players take their turns.
Skip: The skip card allows you to skip the next player’s turn.

Cake Duel

If at any point during the game, two players have the same type of cake in front of them, a Cake Duel is triggered. During the Cake Duel, the involved players must each draw a card from the draw pile. The player who draws a card with the highest number wins the duel and gets to keep both cakes. If there is a tie, another round of Cake Duel takes place until there’s a winner.

The Set-Up for the Duel

We’ll begin by shuffling the core deck, which consists of 20 cards. Once shuffled, deal 4 cards to each player. Remember, you should only look at your own hand.

The player who can do the best impression of a sheep will start as the attacker. That lucky person will be given 3 cake tokens (Player 1). The other player, Player 2, will receive 4 cake tokens.

Now, let’s put aside the special pink cards for the time being. We won’t include them in the deck just yet.

Game Play

Duels are played as a series of separate rounds. Whoever wins 3 rounds first, wins the duel!

The objective of each round is to either collect all of the opponent’s cakes or catch them lying.

During a round, players alternate attacking with Sheepie troop cards in order to gain cake or expose their opponent’s deception.

When it’s my turn, I get to choose some cards, and I keep them hidden so that no one knows which ones I took. These cards help me steal cakes!

The other player has a choice when it’s their turn. They can take some cards too, but they have to keep them hidden as well. These cards will help them stop me from stealing cakes. Or, they can try to challenge my attack by saying “I don’t believe you can steal cakes!” They have to be really sure about it though, because if they’re wrong, they’ll lose out big time!

When I steal the cakes, they get moved from one place to another. Then, both of us get new cards, and the fight keeps going!

A fight has a bunch of turns. Take a look at this chart to see the order of things for one turn.

If any of these three conditions are met at any point during a turn, the match will come to an end:

If a wrestler successfully pins their opponent down on the mat for a count of three, they win the bout and the match is over.
If a wrestler forces their opponent to submit by applying a submission hold and the opponent taps out or verbally indicates their submission, the match is immediately stopped, and the wrestler applying the hold is declared the winner.
If a wrestler is unable to continue the match due to injury or other circumstances and the referee is forced to stop the match, the wrestler’s opponent is declared the winner by default.

These three situations mark the end of a wrestling match. They are the ultimate determinants of who emerges victorious and who suffers defeat. They represent the culmination of the intense struggle that takes place within the squared circle. It is a contest of skill, strength, and endurance, where the slightest mistake can lead to a devastating defeat or a triumphant victory. When we play Cake Duel, we have a special rule to follow. All the cards we play are put facedown. It’s like a mystery! To make a move, we have to put one or maybe more cards facedown in the discard pile. But wait, there’s more! When we put our cards facedown, we have to claim what they are.

When I make a claim, I’m announcing how many cards I’ve played and their names. Of course, sometimes I might try to deceive you with a bluff. It’s all part of the game!

But there are a couple of rules we need to follow when it comes to making claims. First, we can’t lie about the number of cards we’ve played. That wouldn’t be fair. And second, we can’t claim multiple troop names all at once. It’s important to keep the game balanced and fair for both players.

Oh, and one more thing. We can’t flip our claimed cards faceup at the end of a turn. That would give away too much information and take away some of the strategy.

Now, let’s talk about attacking and blocking. During each turn, I’ll make an attacking claim, telling you what I’m doing. Then, it’s your turn to make a blocking claim and defend yourself. It’s a back-and-forth battle of wits and strategy.

Here’s the thing: I can claim as many troops as I want to block the attack. But if I don’t claim enough, and the attackers are left unblocked, guess what? They still get to have their way with my cake. Not cool.

After each claim, the other player gets a chance to call my bluff. They can do this by saying “challenge” and flipping the cards that were played. It’s like turning the tables, you know?

If someone makes a false claim, they lose and the challenger wins.
If the claim is true, the person who made the claim wins.

For example, Alice puts down 2 cards face-down and says “I have two Soldier cards.”

Victory by Touches: In this scenario, a fencer manages to touch their opponent with their weapon before their opponent can touch them. It’s all about timing and precision. One swift touch can make all the difference!
Victory by Disqualification: This is when a fencer’s opponent commits a foul that is severe enough to warrant disqualification. This means you automatically win the bout. It’s not the most glamorous way to win, but hey, a win is a win!

So, there you have it! Those are the three paths to victory in the game. Which one will you choose?

When the bout is over, the person who wins gets a trophy token. Then, all the cards are shuffled back into the deck, and we start the next bout. The person who lost the last bout goes first this time.
