How to Play

Blood Rage is divided into three rounds, called Ages. Each Age consists of six phases:

  2. Action

  6. Release Valhalalla

In this game, we have different phases that we need to go through. Each phase must be completed before starting the next one. To keep track of our progress, we move the Saga token on the Age Track from one phase to another. When one Age is finished, we move the Saga token to the first phase of the next Age, until we reach the end of the Third Age, which marks the end of the game.

I. First Phase: Gods’ Gifts

When we reach this phase, we get to choose the cards that will shape our destiny. These cards hold the key to upgrading our troops and clan, summoning monstrous allies, embarking on epic quests, and gaining the power needed to emerge victorious in battle.

As we progress into the Second and Third Age, we must take into account any lingering cards in our hand from the previous Age. Before anything else, we must place these cards facedown on our clan sheet, right atop our clan symbol.

We then collect the deck of cards corresponding to the current Age from the Age Track. Each player receives 8 cards from this deck. Of course, there will always be two cards remaining after dealing (or four, in a game with only two players). These extra cards should be discarded without peeking at their contents.

Let me explain how this works: I check out the eight cards I’ve been dealt and choose one to keep. I place it facedown on my clan sheet, right on top of the symbol that represents my clan animal. Once everyone has chosen a card and put it on their sheet, we pass the rest of our cards to the person on our left.

Next, I take a look at the cards I’ve received from the player on my right. I choose one to keep and place it facedown on my clan sheet. Then I pass the remaining cards to the left again.

We keep selecting and passing cards until we all have six new cards on our sheets. At that point, we’ll have two cards left, but we don’t pass them. Instead, we discard them without showing what they are.

By the end of this stage, we all should have 6 cards in our hands. These are the cards we can use during the main part of the game – the Action phase.

The Action Phase

This is where the real action happens! It’s when we invade, pillage, fight battles, and things can get bloody.

At the start of the Action phase, each player has a certain amount of Rage, as indicated by the Rage stat on their clan sheet. In the first phase, you already set your Rage at 6. But in later phases, if you’ve improved your clan’s Rage stat, you’ll have even more Rage to start with.

For example, let’s say I’m playing as the Raven clan. In the previous phase, I boosted my Rage stat by two steps. So, when the next Action phase begins, I’ll have 8 Rage to kick things off.

When we start playing the game, the person who has the First Player token gets the chance to go first. From there, everyone takes their turn going in a clockwise direction.

When it’s your turn, you have to choose one action to do. Some actions require you to spend Rage points, and if that’s the case, you have to pay the cost before you can take the action. Keep track of how much Rage you’ve spent by moving the token on your clan’s Rage Track. If you don’t have enough Rage to pay for an action, you can’t do it.

After you finish your action, your turn is over. The player to your left then takes their turn, doing one action and paying any Rage cost it has. This process continues with each player taking their turn in order.

When I’m down to zero Rage, I can’t do anything on my turn. Not even a zero-cost action. All I can do is react to what the other players are doing. Maybe I can join a battle that someone else started.

When it’s my turn to take an action, there are five options for me to choose from. I can keep choosing the same action over and over in the Action phase, but only one action per turn.

If I can’t or don’t want to take an action, I can choose to pass. But if I pass, I lose all my remaining Rage and can’t take any more actions.

The Action phase ends right away when either all players have zero Rage or all the provinces that haven’t been destroyed are successfully pillaged. It doesn’t matter if players still have Rage left.

In the game, I can choose one of the characters in my reserve and spend as much Rage as their strength. By doing this, I can bring that character from my reserve into any empty village in an outer province. If the character happens to be a Ship, it has to be placed in a fjord. It’s important to note that I can’t use this action to put a character directly in Yggdrasil; if I want to put my troops there, I’ll have to March them. Oh, and just so you know, invading with my Leader doesn’t cost any Rage.

Let me give you an example. Say I’m playing as the Raven clan and I’ve upgraded my Warriors. Now their strength is 2. In order to Invade the empty Utgard village, I’ll have to pay 2 Rage and bring one of my Warriors from my reserve.

Here’s a tip: keep an eye on your Horns stat. If the number of characters you have on the board is the same as your current Horns stat, you won’t be able to Invade with any more characters. Just remember that Valhalla doesn’t count as part of the board.

B. March

When I order my troops to March, I have to spend 1 Rage. I get to choose a province, but I can’t pick a fjord. From that province, I can move as many of my figures as I want to empty villages in another province. The destination province doesn’t have to be next to the starting one – it can be anywhere on the board.

I can’t move figures from two different provinces in the same turn, and I can’t move them to two different provinces either. I can only March from one province to another.

Remember, using the March action is usually the only way to get my figures to Yggdrasil. There aren’t any villages in Yggdrasil, so I can have as many figures there as I want.

There’s no limit to the number of figures that can occupy Yggdrasil. So, if I have an army of eager warriors in Angerboda, I can transport them all to Yggdrasil in one go. It’s a powerful move!
  3. Oops! The brown player is in a bit of a predicament here. They can’t move their figures into two different provinces with a single March action. So, they have to come up with a different strategy to maneuver their forces effectively.
  4. The red player is facing a similar problem to the brown player. They can’t move their figures from two different provinces with a single March action. It’s a tactical limitation they have to contend with.
  5. Lastly, it’s crucial to remember that ships can never be moved. They’re anchored in their respective provinces, and we can’t transport them via a March action. It’s an important rule to keep in mind!

C. Upgrade

When you play the game, you will have a sheet for your clan. On this sheet, there are spaces for upgrades. You can have a total of eight upgrades on your sheet. Each of these upgrades goes into a different slot: one for your Warriors, one for your Leader, one for your Ship, two for Monsters, and three for your Clan.

When you want to upgrade, you have to choose a card from your hand. Then, you have to pay Rage points equal to the Strength (STR) of that card. After that, you put the card into one of the slots on your clan sheet. If there is more than one slot where the card could go, you get to decide which one you want to use. However, if there is already a card in that slot, you have to get rid of the old card and replace it with the new one. The new Upgrade card will stay in its slot for the rest of the game and it will give you benefits. These benefits can be anything from making your troops stronger to giving them special abilities.

Now, let’s talk about troop upgrades. Troop upgrades are a type of upgrade that make your troops better. You can have more than one troop upgrade in different slots. If you have two upgrades that give you the same type of benefit, both of them will give you that benefit. They won’t cancel each other out.

When you play as a Leader, Warrior, or Ship upgrade, and you have the corresponding figure in your reserve, you have the option to instantly Invade with it without needing to use any extra Rage before the next player takes their turn.

Monster Upgrades

Monsters are special figures that have the ability to significantly alter the course of the game. Each monster possesses a unique and powerful special ability.

Once you play a Monster upgrade, you acquire the corresponding Monster figure. Attach your clan’s base to it and place the Monster in your reserve. After that, it becomes one of your figures for the duration of the game. You also have the option to immediately Invade with the Monster without having to spend any additional Rage.

Your Monster is susceptible to death and can be sent to Valhalla just like any other figure. During the next Release Valhalla phase, it will return to your reserve. In addition, the Monster can earn Glory for you during the Ragnarok phase, just like any other figure.

Did you know that there’s a limit to the number of Monsters you can have in your clan? You can only have 2 Monsters at a time. So, if you want to add a new Monster to your clan but all the slots are already filled, you’ll have to make a tough decision. You’ll have to discard one of your existing Monsters in order to make room for the new one. But don’t worry, you won’t lose your discarded Monster forever. It’s not an easy choice, but sometimes you have to let go of old friends to make room for new ones.

D. Quest

Hey there! Let me tell you about this cool thing called Quests. So, what you do is take a Quest card from your hand and commit to it. Just put it face down on your clan sheet, on top of your clan’s animal symbol. And guess what? It won’t cost you any Rage to commit to a Quest. How great is that? Oh, and you can commit to as many Quests as you want during each Age. You can even commit to two Quests of the same type and get separate rewards for each one. Pretty awesome, right? You can check out your own Quests anytime you want.

Now here’s the interesting part. In the Action phase, you should try your best to complete the demands of the Quests you committed to. That way, you’ll get some sweet rewards during the next Quest phase. But don’t worry, there’s no punishment for failing a Quest. Sometimes things just don’t work out, you know?

Oh, one more thing to remember. Even though it doesn’t cost you any Rage to commit to a Quest, if you have zero Rage, you can’t take any actions. Not even a free one. So keep that in mind, my friend.

E. Pillage

If you know how to Pillage a province, you can get a reward that will make your clan stronger or earn you more glory. But before you can get the reward, you have to defeat any other clans that are in that province.

To Pillage, you need to choose a province that has at least one of your figures in it or in a supporting fjord, and that hasn’t been successfully pillaged yet (the Pillage token shows the reward side up). Pillaging doesn’t cost any Rage, but remember that you can’t take any actions if you have zero Rage. There are 3 steps to resolve a Pillaging action:

  1. Call to Battle: You can move your figures to the battle if they are adjacent to the province.
  2. Play Cards: In the battle, you can reveal cards to increase your STR or use special effects.
  3. Resolution: The player with the highest STR wins. The losers are destroyed, and the winner gets the rewards.

1. Let the Battle Commence!

So, once I’ve said I want to go pillaging in a province, you and the other players can join in on the action. Starting with the player on your left and going around the table, everyone has the opportunity to move one of their figures from a neighboring province into one of the empty villages in the province I’m attacking. Oh, and just to be clear, it doesn’t cost any Rage to move a figure this way (but remember, you can’t move Ships). The battle will kick off once all the villages in that province are occupied or if no one else wants to join the fun.

Oh, and here’s an interesting tidbit: there are no villages in Yggdrasil, so any number of figures can jump into the fray there!

If there are no enemies in the province or its supporting fjord, we skip the battle and automatically Pillage the province, flipping its Pillage token to the “pillaged” side and gaining its reward. No Glory is earned for winning battles in this case.

If there are enemies present, a battle occurs, and all figures in the province being pillaged, or its supporting fjord, have to fight.

Step 2: Play Cards

Each player in the battle selects a card from their hand and places it face down in front of them, unless they have no cards left (then they skip this step). Afterwards, all players reveal their chosen card simultaneously.

So, when you show a Battle card, it’s like unleashing a secret weapon. The card’s added Strength (STR) bonus gets added to the total STR of your figures in the battle. And that’s not all – any special abilities listed on the card come into play too.

But here’s the twist. If you reveal an Upgrade or Quest card, it doesn’t do anything in terms of Strength in battle. It’s just there, with no effect.

Now, each clan does some math. They add up the STR of all their figures in the battle and then throw in the +STR bonus from their played Battle card (if they have one). That total is their clan’s STR for that battle.

Quick note: Let’s say a special effect on a card wipes out all the figures a player had in the battle, before comparing STR. That doesn’t mean their clan is out of the battle. It just means their figures got destroyed in the heat of battle. But they could still win if their Battle card has enough STR to carry them through.

3. Resolution

Whoever has the most strength wins! If two or more players have the same strength, everyone loses. The winner has to get rid of all the cards they used.

The losers, on the other hand, get to take back all the cards they played.

Those who lose also have to say goodbye to their figures that were in the battle, including the ones that supported from fjords. They go on the Valhalla sheet.

If the player who started the fight comes out victorious, they get to pillage the province and claim the reward shown on the Pillage token (see below). Remember to flip the token over to its “pillaged” side so no one tries to pillage it again until the next Age.

If I don’t win the battle, the province won’t get pillaged and nobody gets the pillage reward. But don’t worry, anyone, including me, can try again later in the phase to pillage the province.

Now, here’s the exciting part – the winner of the battle gets Glory, regardless of whether I’m the one pillaging or not. The amount of Glory points I receive is equal to my current Axes stat, as shown on my clan sheet. So the more Axes I have, the more Glory I’ll get!

III. Discard Phase

When it’s the Third Age, you need to discard all of your cards. That means your hand should be completely empty.

IV. Quest Phase

When we reveal our committed Quests, we share our achievements with each other. If we successfully fulfill a Quest’s demands, we earn the indicated amount of Glory on the card and get to improve one of our clan stats. However, if we fail to meet the quest’s requirements, we gain nothing but also lose nothing. We must discard all revealed Quests, regardless of success or failure.

Most Quests revolve around having the highest Strength in a specific province. To determine if we fulfill the Quest, we need to add up the Strength of all our figures in that province, including the supporting fjord. We then compare our total Strength to the sum of all the other clans’ Strength in the same province.

If our total Strength is greater, we are successful in fulfilling the Quest. But if we tie with an opponent, we fail the Quest.

But wait, there’s more! Let me tell you a fascinating story. In the world of STR 2 ships and STR 1 warriors, there was a fierce battle between Angerboda and the brave blue player. Little did they know that hidden within this clash was an opportunity for greatness.

Now, each clan does some math. They add up the STR of all their figures in the battle and then throw in the +STR bonus from their played Battle card (if they have one). That total is their clan’s STR for that battle.

Quick note: Let’s say a special effect on a card wipes out all the figures a player had in the battle, before comparing STR. That doesn’t mean their clan is out of the battle. It just means their figures got destroyed in the heat of battle. But they could still win if their Battle card has enough STR to carry them through.

3. Resolution

Whoever has the most strength wins! If two or more players have the same strength, everyone loses. The winner has to get rid of all the cards they used.

The losers, on the other hand, get to take back all the cards they played.

Those who lose also have to say goodbye to their figures that were in the battle, including the ones that supported from fjords. They go on the Valhalla sheet.

If the player who started the fight comes out victorious, they get to pillage the province and claim the reward shown on the Pillage token (see below). Remember to flip the token over to its “pillaged” side so no one tries to pillage it again until the next Age.

If I don’t win the battle, the province won’t get pillaged and nobody gets the pillage reward. But don’t worry, anyone, including me, can try again later in the phase to pillage the province.

Now, here’s the exciting part – the winner of the battle gets Glory, regardless of whether I’m the one pillaging or not. The amount of Glory points I receive is equal to my current Axes stat, as shown on my clan sheet. So the more Axes I have, the more Glory I’ll get!

III. Discard Phase

Okay, so now it’s time to get rid of all those extra cards you have in your hand. You can only keep one card to use in the next round. So go ahead and say goodbye to the rest of them!

When it’s the Third Age, you need to discard all of your cards. That means your hand should be completely empty.

IV. Quest Phase

When we reveal our committed Quests, we share our achievements with each other. If we successfully fulfill a Quest’s demands, we earn the indicated amount of Glory on the card and get to improve one of our clan stats. However, if we fail to meet the quest’s requirements, we gain nothing but also lose nothing. We must discard all revealed Quests, regardless of success or failure.

Most Quests revolve around having the highest Strength in a specific province. To determine if we fulfill the Quest, we need to add up the Strength of all our figures in that province, including the supporting fjord. We then compare our total Strength to the sum of all the other clans’ Strength in the same province.

If our total Strength is greater, we are successful in fulfilling the Quest. But if we tie with an opponent, we fail the Quest.

So, here’s what you do: take the token from the current Ragnarok slot and put it on the province it corresponds to. Make sure the “destroyed” side is facing up. That province is done for, and it’s out of the game.

And when that happens, all the figures in that province, as well as the ones in its supporting fjord, they all die. Boom! And then they go straight to Valhalla. Oh, and here’s the cool part: each figure that gets sent to Valhalla earns its clan some Glory. The amount of Glory they get depends on the Ragnarok slot on the Age Track. So, on the First Age, each figure – including Monsters – gets the clan 2 Glory. On the Second Age, it’s 3 Glory. And on the Third Age, it’s 4 Glory. Not too shabby, right?

Now, to wrap things up, you gotta take the Doom token and put it on the province that’s indicated by the next Age’s Ragnarok token. Simple as that.

VI. Release Valhalla Phase

When an Age comes to an end, the gods grant me a special favor. They return all the warriors from Valhalla to their rightful owners. If you are a warrior of my clan, you will receive your fighters back and they will join your reserves. But if you still have warriors on the game board, they will stay there for now.

The Age Ends

Before we move on to the next Age, I want you to turn all the Pillage tokens on the game board back to their “reward” side. Remember, these tokens will stay in the same province throughout the game, so keep an eye on them.

And don’t forget, the player to my left will become the First Player in the upcoming Age. So make sure you keep track of the turn order.

Once the Release Valhalla phase of the Third Age is complete, the world comes to an end, and so does the game. Now it’s time to find out which clan has earned the most glory and secured its place in Valhalla alongside Odin’s throne!

But there’s one final bonus to calculate. You’ll receive a Glory bonus for reaching legendary levels in each of your clan’s stats. At the end of the game, for every stat that reaches the 4th or 5th step, you’ll gain +10 Glory. And if any of your stats reach the very last step, you’ll gain +20 Glory.

For example: Let’s say I’m playing as the Raven clan, and I’ve managed to elevate a couple of my clan’s stats to legendary levels. By the end of the game, I’ll earn +10 Glory for my Rage stat and +20 Glory for my Axes stat, totaling +30 Glory.

The player whose clan has the highest Glory score will be declared the winner.
