Play or pay – learn to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Play or Pay!

Play or Pay is a fun card game that you can enjoy with three or more players. The objective of the game is simple – be the first to get rid of all your cards!

In Play or Pay, you’ll need to play cards from your hand onto a layout by matching the rank and suit.

Getting Started

First, choose a dealer at random. The dealer will shuffle the deck and distribute the cards as evenly as possible to each player. It’s okay if some players end up with an extra card.

Understanding Card Ranking

In this game, the card ranking is continuous, which means that once it reaches the highest value, it starts again from the lowest. The highest ranked card is the King, followed by the Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and finally, the Ace is the lowest ranked card.

Let’s Play!

Alright, let’s dive into the game. I’ll explain how it all works.

First things first, the player on the left of the dealer gets things started. They can play any card they want. The card they choose will be the first card in the layout.

Now, here’s an important rule: the suit of the first card played needs to be finished before anyone can move on to a new suit. For example, let’s say the first player decides to play a 5 of clubs. That means the next player must play all the clubs in order before they can start a different suit.

So, for this example, the order in which the cards must be played is: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2, 3, and 4. Once the 4 is played, the player who finishes the suit gets to pick any card from their hand to start the next suit.

Now, what happens if a player can’t play a card on their turn? Well, they have to put a chip into the center pot. It’s just part of the game.

The game keeps going until a player plays their very last card. That’s when we know the game is over.

END OF GAME

The game ends when you manage to completely empty your hand. If you’re the first player to do so, congratulations! You win the game and collect all the chips that were placed into the pot for that round. This game can be played as a single round or you can play multiple rounds to make it more exciting. To play multiple rounds, simply pass the dealer to the left and follow the setup instructions again.
