An Introduction to Machiavelli

I’m Machiavelli, an Italian card game that borrows some elements from the classic game Rummy. Unlike other card games, I don’t involve any gambling, making me a perfect choice for a fun and unintimidating party game. I’ve been around since World War II, creating joyful moments for generations! My unique twist is that I allow you to rearrange the melds on the table, adding an element of strategy and manipulation.

The Deal

When we play the game of Machiavelli, we use two standard decks of cards. We take out the jokers and shuffle the decks well. Then, we randomly choose one person to be the first dealer. There are many ways to do this, so we can pick whichever method works best for us. Once we have our dealer, they give each player 15 cards. They start on their left and go around the table in a clockwise direction. If we have more than 5 players, the dealer can give out fewer cards if they want to. But they have to give each player at least 3 cards. Any cards that aren’t dealt out form the stockpile. We put this pile in the middle of the table so that everyone can reach it easily.

Let’s Play!

The goal of Machiavelli is to get rid of all the cards in your hand. You do this by making different combinations with your cards on the table. Here are the combinations that count:

  • A set of 3 or 4 cards that have the same rank but different suits.

When it comes to playing the card game Machiavelli, there are a few important rules you need to understand. First, you must have three or more cards in sequence from the same suit to make a valid sequence. The only exception is that Aces can count as both a high card and a low card, but you can’t use them in a turn-around sequence. For example, 2-A-K is not valid, but 3-2-A and Q-K-A are valid sequences.

During your turn, you have two options: you can play one or more cards from your hand to the table, arranging them in one of the valid combinations described earlier, or you can draw the top card from the stockpile. Remember, you can only choose one of these actions, and after you complete an action, play passes to the player on your left.

When playing cards to the table, you have the ability to break up and rearrange existing melds. This can only be done during the first action, when you choose to play at least one card from your hand to the table.

The goal of the game is to be the first player to play all the cards in your hand, or to “go out” as it’s called. Once a player goes out, they win the game!

Variation: Guadalupe

Guadalupe is a variation of Machiavelli that adds an extra twist to the game. In Guadalupe, players are dealt 5 cards at the beginning. During your turn, if you haven’t played any cards, you must draw 2 cards from the stockpile. However, if you have played at least one card without going out, you only draw 1 card from the stockpile at the end of your turn. Once a player goes out, all remaining players earn 1 penalty point for each card left in their hand.
