Gan deng yan – learn how to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Gan Deng Yan!

Hey there! Gan Deng Yan is an awesome climbing game that you can play with 2 to 6 players. The goal of this game is to use the cards in your hand to play tricks and empty your hand as quickly as possible. It’s all about strategy!

When you play Gan Deng Yan, you’ll go through multiple rounds. But don’t worry, you and your friends can decide how many rounds you want to play. This way, you can make sure that everyone has a fair chance to win!

Getting Started

Before we dive into the game, let me explain how to set it up. It’s super simple, I promise!

When we gather to play cards, we start by choosing a dealer. It’s a simple process – we just randomly pick someone to be the dealer, and that person becomes the previous winner of the round. Every time we have a new deal, the dealer changes.

The dealer’s first task is to shuffle the cards. Then, they hand the deck to the player sitting on their left to cut it. After that, the dealer places the deck in the middle of all the players and draws the top card into their hand.

Now, the fun begins! The dealer starts distributing the cards, going counterclockwise around the table. Each player receives one card at a time, in a specific order. The dealer will keep going until they have a hand of 6 cards, and all the other players have 5 cards.

But wait, there’s more! The remaining cards, the ones that were not given to the players, are placed face down in the center of the table. These cards form the talon, and we will use them later.

Let’s Talk About Card Rank and Melds

Now that we know how to deal the cards, let me tell you about card rank and melds. Each card has its own ranking in the game.

We start with the Ace which is the highest-ranked card, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3. However, the 2s and Jokers have their own rules and don’t really follow the ranking system like the other cards.

When playing the game of 2s, I can only play them to single and pair melds. A meld is a combination of cards that I use to play cards out of my hand. The jokers in the game are wild cards, which means they can be any rank of card when played with at least one other card. However, if I play a joker as a single card, it has no rank.

Before playing a meld to a trick, I have to make sure it’s a legal combination. There are specific rules that determine what combinations are legal. When following with a meld, it has to be the same type of meld and have the same number of cards as the previous meld played to the trick. The only difference is that the rank of the meld I follow with has to be one higher than the previous meld played. It’s important to note that there may be exceptions to these rules, which will be explained further in the rules below.

Let’s talk about melds in the card game. Melds are divided into two types: ordinary melds and bombs. In total, there are four ordinary melds and three bombs. Ordinary melds are made up of single cards, pairs, sequences, and double sequences. Bombs, on the other hand, consist of triplets, four of a kinds, and double joker bombs.

So, what exactly do these melds mean? A single card is just a single card, like an ace or a 3, that you play to start a trick. The ranking of single cards goes from lowest to highest, following the order I mentioned earlier. However, there’s a special rule for 2s: they can also serve as single cards, and if you play a 2 as a single card, it becomes the highest-ranking card. You can play a single card at any time, even if there’s already a card on the table. However, jokers cannot be played as single cards unless they’re the only card left in your hand and there are no cards in the talon. In that case, you can play the joker to win the game. Keep in mind that a single card is the lowest-ranked ordinary meld.

A pair of cards is when you have two cards with the same rank, like two Aces or two 3s. You can also have a pair of 2s which are the highest-ranking pair possible.

A sequence is when you have three or more cards in a row, like a 4, 5, and 6 of any suit. However, you cannot have a sequence that includes a 2.

Double sequences are when you have two pairs of cards in consecutive order, like two Aces and two Kings. 2s cannot be used in double sequences. A double sequence is the highest-ranking meld you can make.

Triplets are when you have three cards with the same rank, like three Jacks. A triplet is also known as a bomb and can be played after a lower-ranked bomb or any ordinary meld. 2s are considered the highest-ranked triplet.

When you’re playing a card game called Four of a Kind, you need to have all four cards of the same rank. This combination is known as a bomb, and it’s a pretty powerful one. You can play a four of a kind after a lower-ranked bomb or any ordinary meld. Just remember, 2s are the highest four of a kind you can have.

Now, if you really want to make a big impact on the game, you can go for a double joker bomb. This takes both jokers, and let me tell you, it’s the highest-ranked bomb you can play. Nothing can follow it in a trick, so it’s a real game-changer.

Let’s Talk Gameplay

Okay, so the game starts with the dealer leading any meld to the trick. After that, it’s up to the players in a clockwise direction to play their melds. But there are some rules to follow. When it’s your turn to follow a meld, you’ve got to make sure it’s a legal one. To be legal, it needs to meet certain conditions.

If you’re following a regular meld, you can play a higher-ranking meld of the same type with the same number of cards. Or, you can play any bomb meld. That gives you some options to work with. But if you’re following a bomb, things get a little trickier. You’ve got to play a higher-ranked meld of the same type or an even higher ranked bomb. That’s where the strategy really comes into play.

When you can’t legally play a trick, you have the option to pass. Turns continue until all other players also pass. The last meld played wins the trick. After the trick is resolved, the game board is cleared, and the winner of the trick gets to draw the top card of the talon and add it to their hand. They can also lead the next trick.

If at some point there aren’t enough cards in the talon for every player to draw, cards are drawn as usual until a player can no longer draw. The remaining player proceeds without a new card. From then on, the rest of the round is played with only the cards in players’ hands.

The round comes to an end when someone empties their hand, which often occurs in the middle of a trick. The player who runs out of cards becomes the winner of the round.

SCORING

At the end of every round, I gather up all my cards and see how many points I’ve earned. I keep track of my score throughout the game, adding up all the points I’ve earned in each round.

THE GAME IS OVER

When the game is finished, the player with the most points is declared the winner. It’s that simple!
