DRAGONWOOD
Hey there! When you’re exploring the magical forest of Dragonwood, get ready to come face to face with all kinds of fierce creatures, including mighty dragons! The way to conquer these creatures is by playing cards to earn some dice. And those dice, my friend, are what you’ll use to defeat your enemies. The ultimate goal is to score victory points as you play, striving to be the player with the highest score to claim the win!
SETUP
Alright, let’s get things set up! First things first, grab those two turn summary cards and set them aside. Now, we need to sort the rest of the cards into two separate decks: a green deck and a red deck. Once you’ve got that done, it’s time to focus on the Dragonwood deck, also known as the green deck. Take a careful look through that deck and remove the two powerful dragon cards from the mix.
Alright, here’s what we need to do to get the game started. First, let’s shuffle the rest of the deck, and after that, you’ll need to remove a certain number of cards depending on how many players are joining us. If it’s just two players, take out twelve cards. If there are three players, remove ten cards. And for four players, eight cards should do the trick. Once that’s done, we’ll place the dragon cards back into the bottom half of the deck.
Now, let’s move on to the next step. Take five cards from the Dragonwood deck and put them in the middle of our playing area. We’ll call this area the Landscape. The remaining deck can be placed next to the Landscape, face down. Oh, and don’t forget to shuffle the Adventurer deck, or the red deck, and give each player five cards.
Before we start, just make sure that everyone can easily reach the six dice and the turn summary cards. And with that, we’re all set to begin the game!
Let’s Play!
When I go hiking in the woods and then come back home, I become the first player in a game. From there, the gameplay continues to the left, with the next player taking their turn. During a turn, there are two things you can choose to do.
If you decide to Reload, you have the opportunity to draw one Adventurer card from the deck and add it to your hand. To end your turn, simply say “reload.” It’s worth noting that you can only have a maximum of nine cards in your hand. If you draw a card and end up with more than nine, you’ll have to discard one.
Alternatively, you can choose to Capture cards. To do this, you have a few options: striking, stomping, or screaming. When striking, you play cards that are in a numerical row, regardless of their color. For stomping, you play cards that all have the same number. And if you choose to scream, you play all cards that share the same color.
First things first, let me explain the process before we dive into the details. To start, I need to tell you which Creature or Enchantment I’m trying to capture, and then show you the cards I’m using, including any Enchantments. Once that’s settled, we roll a die for each card played to determine our score.
Now that we have our scores, it’s time to do some math. We add up the numbers on the dice, including any Enchantments, and compare that to the number on the Creature or Enchantment card. The sword means a strike, the boot means a stomp, and the face means a scream. If the total of our dice is equal to or greater than the number on the card, we successfully capture it.
When you defeat a creature, you place it face down in a victory pile next to you, along with all the cards you used to beat it. If you can’t defeat the creature, you have to get rid of one card as a wound. If you capture an Enchantment, you put it face up in front of you, and you can use it for the rest of the game. You can throw away all the Adventurer cards you used to capture it. Make sure to keep the Landscape refreshed throughout the game, with no empty spaces.
If you have three Adventurer cards of the same color and in consecutive order, you can discard them to get two dice. If you roll a 6 or higher, you defeat the dragon.
Types of Cards
If you draw a lucky ladybug, you have to discard the card and draw two more cards.
Let’s talk about the different types of cards in the Dragonwood deck and how they can help you on your quest to win the game.
First, we have creature cards. These cards are the backbone of the Dragonwood deck. Defeating creatures is how you earn Victory points, and the number of Victory points you get for defeating a creature is shown on the bottom left corner of the card. So, the more creatures you defeat, the closer you’ll get to winning the game.
Next, we have enchantment cards. Enchantments make it easier for you to defeat creatures. When you capture an enchantment, it stays with you for the whole game and can be used each turn. The amount of dice required to capture an enchantment is shown in the bottom left corner of the card. Keep in mind that some enchantments may have additional requirements or special effects.
Finally, we have event cards. Events happen immediately and affect all players. When an event card is played, you read the instructions on the card and then discard it for the rest of the game. After discarding the event card, you replace the Landscape with another Dragonwood card. Events can sometimes bring unexpected challenges or opportunities, so be prepared to adapt your strategy accordingly.
Now that you know about the different types of cards in Dragonwood, you’re ready to embark on your quest for victory. Good luck and may the luck of the dice be in your favor!
END OF GAME
So here’s how the game can end: There are two ways. Firstly, if both dragons are taken down, that’s it – game over. Secondly, if two Adventure decks have been played through, the game also comes to an end.
Afterwards, it’s time to add up victory points on the captured character cards. The player who managed to capture the most character cards gets a bonus of three extra points. And the player with the highest total victory points becomes the ultimate winner!
So, let’s summarize: to bring the game to a close, you either defeat both dragons or go through two Adventure decks. Then, calculate victory points from captured character cards, with the player who collected the most getting a bonus of three points. Finally, the player with the highest overall total is crowned the winner!
